  • Pottery filled with organic materials was excavated from the G-2 building site of Yongjangseong Fortress, Jingo, a relic of the Goryeo Dynasty. In this study, the characteristics of organic material were confirmed by a scientific analysis of organic material in pottery found at the palace in Yongjangseong, Jindo. In addition, it was intended to review the analysis method to identify the natural resin and to secure characteristic components(biomarkers) for each natural resin and use them as basic data in the future. The organic materials in the pottery were analyzed using attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy(ATR-FTIR) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry(GC-MS). The infrared spectral characteristics were estimated to be natural resin, and biomarkers of organic materials were identified as sesquiterpene-based compounds(C15H24, MW 204) and derivatives. The lacquer(T.vemicifluum) is composed mainly of alkenes, alkanes, and catechol. Pine resin(P.densiflora), on the other hand, is primarily composed of diterpenoid(abietic acid, pimaric acid) and Whangchil(yellow lacquer) is identified to have sesquiterpenes(such as selinene, muurolene, calamenene) as its main components. So, the organic material in the pottery can be identified as Whangchil by comparing their compounds with modern resin materials from Dendropanax. morbifera that correspond with the results. Whangchil, which is exuded from the Dendropanax. morbifera, has been used as a natural coating materials since ancient times, and it has been confirmed that the characteristic components are well preserved even 700 years later. It can be assumed that the interior Whangchil was stored not for use as a coating, but rather for ritual purposes when the building was constructed, because the pottery was found near the cornerstone. Furthermore, based on simplified sample preparation using pyrolysis-gas chromatography mass spectrometry(Py-GC-MS), the thermal decomposition products were found to be similar to the characteristic components, suggesting that this method can be applied to the identification of natural resins used in historic artifacts.

  • The purpose of this study was to improve release rate and bioavailability of nateglinide formulation. Polymorphism selection and particle size control were performed to enhance formulation dissolution rate, and a pH modifier was included in the formulation to overcome pH-dependent solubility of nateglinide. The enhanced dissolution rate was characterized by using a dissolution test. The results showed that H-type raw material had a higher dissolution rate than that of B-type raw material. There was 6.2% difference in dissolution between the two materials at 60 min. With regard to particle size, raw material with a $1.13{\mu}m$ particle size showed a 20% faster release rate than that of raw material with a $2.28{\mu}m$ particle size. Furthermore, fumaric acid was included in formulation as a pH modifier. That addition produced a greater than 50% improvement in dissolution rate. In conclusion, dissolution rate of nateglinide can be enhanced by optimizing its polymorphism and particle size; moreover, a synergistic effect on the enhancement of dissolution rate is obtained by including fumaric acid, a pH modifier, in the formulation.

  • This study aimed to characterize and compare makgeolli (a Korean rice wine) made using different raw materials. Five cultivars of rice and wheat flour were used as starch materials for makgeolli and assessed for their moisture, crude lipid, crude protein, and crude dietary fiber content. Overall, wheat flour was higher in crude lipid and crude protein and lower in moisture than rice. Makgeolli characteristics were assessed for pH, total acids, organic acids, free sugars, color and appearance. We found no significant differences in pH and total acids between makgeolli made from rice and wheat flour. In addition, the major free sugar in the makgeolli made from rice and wheat flour was glucose, although the content of total free sugars was lower in the wheat flour makgeolli (67.75 mg/mL) than the rice makgeolli (76.41~84.53 mg/mL). In terms of organic acids content, the total organic acid content was highest in the wheat flour makgeolli, while the major organic acids of the makgeolli made from rice and wheat flour were lactic acid and succinic acid, respectively. There were no significant differences in color values among rice makgeolli, but the rice makgeolli was higher in sensory scores (indicating preference) than the wheat flour makgeolli. As the degree of milling increased, moisture, crude lipid, and crude protein in the rice decreased. Acetic acid in the makgeolli also decreased, while there were no significant differences in pH, total acids, free sugars, color values, and sensory scores (except fruitiness). Traditional nuruk (TN) and cultured nuruk (CN) were compared as fermentation starters. Nuruk is a Korean traditional starter for fermentation of makgeolli and a raw material for makgeolli making. The pH in the makgoelli made with TN and CN were 4.29~4.65 and 4.02~4.23, respectively. Total organic acid content was higher in the TN makgeolli (3.5~6.3 mg/mL) compared to the CN makgeolli (2.3~4.3 mg/mL). The content of free sugars in the makgeolli made with CN was higher (59.44~73.34 mg/mL) than that with TN (56.45~59.75 mg/mL). The Hunter color test showed that makgeolli made with TN was lighter and higher in red and yellow color compared to CN. Overall sensory acceptability was higher in the CN makgeolli compared to the TN makgeolli.

  • The precursor powders with thin wall structure were prepared by spray pyrolysis from the spray solution with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, citric acid and $NH_4Cl$ flux. The $BaMgAl_{10}O_{17}:Eu$ phosphor powders formed from the spray solution without organic additives and flux material had sizes of $1{\sim}5{\mu}m$ and hollow structure with high thickness at post-treatment temperature of $1,200^{\circ}C$. However, $BaMgAl_{10}O_{17}:Eu$ phosphor powders formed from the spray solution with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, citric acid and $NH_4Cl$ flux had fine size and plate-like shape. The mean crystallite sizes of the phosphor powders with fine sizes were 23, 35, and 33 nm when the content of $NH_4Cl$ flux were 0, 6, 35 wt% of phosphor. The photoluminescence intensity of the phosphor powders formed from the spray solution with the optimum amount of $NH_4Cl$ flux as 35 wt% was 215% of that of the phosphor powders formed from the spray solution without flux material.

  • Plant biomass has been proposed to be an alternative source for petroleum-based chemical compounds. Especially, phenolic chemical compounds can be obtained from lignin by chemical depolymerization processes because lignin consists of complex aromatic polymer such as trans-p-coumaryl, coniferyl and sinapyl alcohols, etc. Phenolic chemical compounds from lignin were usually produced in super critical water. However, we applied Near-critical water (NCW) system because NCW is known as a good solvent for lignin depolymerization. Organic matter like lignin can be solved in NCW system and the system has a unique acid-base property without conventional non-eco-friendly chemicals such as sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide. In this work, we tried to optimize the NCW depolymerization system by adjusting the processing variables such as reaction time, temperature and pressure. Moreover, the amount of additional phenol was optimized by changing the molar ratio between water and phenol. Phenol was used as capping agent to prevent re-polymerization of active fragment such as formaldehyde. Alkali-lignin was used as a starting material and characterized by a Solid State 13C-NMR, FT-IR and EA (Elemental Analysis). GC-MS analysis confirmed that o-cresol, p-cresol, anisole and 4-hydroxyphathalic acid were the main product and they were quantitatively analyzed by HPLC.

  • Tridecanedioic acid (DC-13), starting material of the valuable musk ethylene brassylate, was obtained from n-tridecane by the Candida tropicalis mutant. The mutants were first obtained from primary screening step using the selective medium and then solid phase extraction sampling method was used for the selective isolation of organic acids from the cultured media of mutants. The resulting acids were directly converted to volatile tert-butyldimethyl silyl delivatives, which were then analyzed by gas chromatography. The efficient GC profiling method was used for the rapid identification of the mutant producing DC-13 in large quantity, and for the optimization of the culture conditions of mutant. The optimal culture conditions were found as follows: pH 8.0, 30$^{\circ}C$, 250rpm, 48hour of culture and $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$ as nitrogen source.

  • Proton exchange membrane is the key material for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). Currently widely-used perfluorosulfonic acid membranes have some disadvantages, such as low thermal stability, easy swelling, excessive crossover of methanol and high price etc. Other membranes, including sulfonated polymer, radiation grafted membranes, organic-inorganic hybrids and acid-base blends, do not satisfy the criteria for PEMFC, which set a barrier to the development and commercialization of PEMFC. Pore-filling type proton exchange membrane is a new proton exchange membrane, which is formed by filling porous substrate with electrolytes. Compared with traditional perfluorosulfonic acid membranes, pore-filling type proton exchange membranes have many advantages, such as non- swelling, low methanol permeation, high proton conductivity, low cost and a wide range of materials to choose. In this research, preparation methodology of pore-filling membranes by particularly using all hydrocarbon polymers and fuel cell performances with the membranes are evaluated.

  • In organic chemistry amide synthesis is performed through condensation of a carboxylic acid and an amine with releasing one equivalent of water via the corresponding ammonium carboxylate salt. This method is suffering from tedious processes and poor atom-economy due to the adverse thermodynamics of the equilibrium and the high activation barrier for direct coupling of a carboxylic acid and an amine. Most of the chemical approaches to amides formations have been therefore being developed, they are mainly focused on secondary amides. Direct carbonylations of tertiary amines to amides have been an exotic field unresolved, in particular direct carbonylation of trimethylamine in lack of commercial need has been attracted much interests due to the versatile product of N,N-dimethylacetamide in chemical industries and the activation of robust N-C($sp^3$) bond in tertiary amine academically. This review is focused mainly on carbonylation of trimethylamine as one of the typical tertiary amines by transition metals of cobalt, rhodium, platinum, and palladium including the role of methyl iodide as a promoter, the intermediate formation of acyl iodide, the coordination ability of trimethylamine to transition metal catalysts, and any possibility of CO insertion into the bond of Me-N in trimethylamine. In addition reactions of acyl halides as an activated form of acetic acid with amines are reviewed in brief since acyl iodide is suggested as a critical intermediate in those carbonylations of trimethylamine.

  • Choleretic effect and absorption of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) in rats were studied using UDCA alone and it's ${\beta}-cyclodextrin$ $({\beta}-CyD)$ inclusin complex (UDCA-IC). In spite of increase in solubility and dissolution rate, absorption of UDCA-IC was decreased compared with UDCA alone. Choleretic effect of UDCA-IC was also decreased. It looks that UDCA forms stronger inclusion complex with ${\beta}-CyD$ than any other drug or organic biological material. From this study, it was suggested that UDCA might be used as a new potential competing agent when inclusion complexes of drugs with ${\beta}-CyD$ were administered for the improvement of poor bioavailability.

  • Acid phosphatases (APases) play a role in the release of phosphate in organic complexes in soil. We investigated tissue- and isoform-specific responses of APases to phosphorus (P) deficiency in three rice genotypes; Dasan-byeo, Sobi-byeo, and Palawan. The levels of shoot APase activity per protein were similar in the three genotypes. They significantly decreased with P deprivation that was longer than seven days. Root APase activity per protein was two- to three-fold higher in Dasan than in Sobi and Palawan. In all genotypes the APase activity increased in P-deficient plants, but the increase was higher in Sobi and Palawan. After 21 days of P deprivation, secreted APase activity increased more than eight-fold in Dasan and two-fold in Sobi and Palawan. Isoform profiles of shoot and root APases were most diverse in Dasan. The activities of the major isoforms in P-deficient shoots decreased in all three genotypes. Depending on the genotypes, further increases in constitutive isoforms and new induction of one to four isoforms occurred in P-deficient roots. The results indicate that tissue and genotype differences in the response of APase to P deficiency are primarily facilitated by the different responses of the isoforms.
