Inorganic layers, such as SiOxNy and SiOx deposited using plasma sublimation method, were tested as passivation layer for organic thin-film-transistors (OTFTs). OTFTs with bottom-gate and bottom-contact structure were fabricated using pentacene as organic semiconductor and an organic gate insulator. SiOxNy layer gave little change in characteristics of OTFTs, but SiOx layer degraded the performance of OTFTs severely. Inferior barrier properties related to its lower film density, higher water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) and damage due to process environment of oxygen of SiOx film could explain these results. Polyurea and polyvinyl acetates (PVA) were tested as organic passivation layers also. PVA showed good properties as a buffer layer to reduce the damage come from the vacuum deposition process of upper passivation layers. From these results, a multilayer structure with upper SiOxNy film and lower PVA film is expected to be a superior passivation layer for OTFTs.
In this study, we made a organic thin film device in MIS(Metal-Insulator-Semiconductor) structure by using PVP (Poly vinyl phenol) as a insulating layer, and CdSe/ZnS nano particles which have a core/shell structure inside. We dissolved PVP and PMF in PGMEA, organic solvent, then formed a thin film through a spin coating. After that, it was cross-linked by annealing for 1 hour in a vacuum oven at $185^{\circ}C$. We operated FTIR measurement to check this, and discovered the amount of absorption reduced in the wave-length region near 3400 cm-1, so could observe decrease of -OH. Boonton7200 was used to measure a C-V relationship to confirm a properties of the nano particles, and as a result, the width of the memory window increased when device including nano particles. Additionally, we used HP4145B in order to make sure the electrical characteristics of the organic thin film device and analyzed a conduction mechanism of the device by measuring I-V relationship. When the voltage was low, FNT occurred chiefly, but as the voltage increased, Schottky Emission occurred mainly. We synthesized CdSe/ZnS and to confirm this, took a picture of Si substrate including nano particles with SEM. Spherical quantum dots were properly made. Due to this study, we realized there is high possibility of application of next generation memory device using organic thin film device and nano particles, and we expect more researches about this issue would be done.
We have investigated the effect of the surface roughness of TCO substrate on the characteristics of OLED (organic light emitting diodes) devices. In order to control the surface roughness of ITO thin films, we have processed photolithography and reactive ion etching. The micro-size patterned mask was used, and the etching depth was controlled by changing etching time. The surface morphology of the ITO thin film was observed by FESEM and atomic force microscopy (AFM). And then, organic materials and cathode electrode were sequentially deposited on the ITO thin films. Device structure was ITO/$\alpha$-NPD/DPVB/Alq3/LiF/Al. The DPVB was used as a blue emitting material. The electrical characteristics such as current density vs. voltage and luminescence vs. voltage of OLED devices were measured by using spectrometer (minolta CS-1000A). The current vs. voltage and luminance vs. voltage characteristics were systematically degraded with increasing surface roughness. Furthermore, the retention test clearly presented that the reliability of OLED devices was directly influenced with the surface roughness, which could be interpreted in terms of the concentration of the electric field on the weak and thin organic layers caused by the poor step coverage.
Recently, Top emission organic light-emitting diode (TEOLED) has been attracted by their potential application for the development of flat panel display (FPD). We have fabricated the high luminance top emission organic-emitting diode (TEOLED) using dual cathode layer and three top emitting structure. These devices were characterized by electroluminescence (EL) and current density-voltage (J-V) measurements. After compared it with Au anode structure, luminance of the device using dual anode was better than using without Al device. Consequently, Al layers are very good candidates for a promising electron-injecting buffer layer for top emission light-emitting diode (TEOLED).
We have investigated the effect of surface roughness of TCO substrate on the characteristics of OLED (organic light emitting diodes) devices. In order to control the surface roughness of AZO thin films, we have processed photo-lithography and reactive ion etching. The micro-size patterned mask was used, and the etching depth was controlled by changing etching time. The surface morphology of the AZO thin film was observed by FESEM and atomic force microscopy (AFM). And then, organic materials and cathode electrode were sequentially deposited on the AZO thin films. Device structure was AZO/${\alpha}$-NPD/DPVB/$Alq_3$/LiF/Al. The DPVB was used as a blue emitting material. The electrical characteristics such as current density vs. voltage and luminescence vs. voltage of OLED devices were measured by using spectrometer.
An OLED(Organic Light-Emitting Diode) device based on the emissive electroluminescent layer a film of organic materials. OLED is used for many electronic devices such as TV, mobile phones, handheld games consoles. ULVAC's mass production systems are indispensable to the manufacturing of OLED device. ULVAC is a manufacturer and worldwide supplier of equipment and vacuum systems for the OLED, LCD, Semiconductor, Electronics, Optical device and related high technology industries. The SMD Series are single-substrate sputtering systems for deposition of films such as metal films and TCO (Transparent Conductive Oxide) films. ULVAC has delivered a large number of these systems not only Organic Evaporating systems but also LTPS CVD systems. The most important technology of thin-film encapsulation (TFE) is preventing moisture($H_2O$) and oxygen permeation into flexible OLED devices. As a polymer substrate does not offer the same barrier performance as glass substrate, the TFE should be developed on both the bottom and top side of the device layers for sufficient lifetimes. This report provides a review of promising thin-film barrier technologies as well as the WVTR(Water Vapor Transmission Rate) properties. Multilayer thin-film deposition technology of organic and inorganic layer is very effective method for increasing barrier performance of OLED device. Gases and water in the organic evaporating system is having a strong influence as impurities to OLED device. CRYO pump is one of the very useful vacuum components to reduce above impurities. There for CRYO pump is faster than conventional TMP exhaust velocity of gases and water. So, we suggest new method to make a good vacuum condition which is CRYO Trap addition on OLED evaporator. Alignment accuracy is one of the key technologies to perform high resolution OLED device. In order to reduce vibration characteristic of CRYO pump, ULVAC has developed low vibration CRYO pumps to achieve high resolution alignment performance between Metal mask and substrate. This report also includes ULVAC's approach for these issues.

A dipolar interlayer can cause dramatic changes in the device characteristics of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) or photovoltaics. A shift in the threshold voltage, for example, has been observed in an OFET where the organic semiconductor active layer is deposited on SiO2 modified with a dipolar monolayer. Dipolar molecules can similarly be used to change the current-voltage characteristics of organic-inorganic heterojunctions. We have conducted a series of experiments in which different molecular linkages are placed between a pentacene thin film and a silicon substrate. Interface modifications with different linkages allow us to predict and examine the nature of tunneling through pentacene on modified Si surfaces with different dipole moment. The molecular-scale structure and the tunneling properties of pentacene thin films on modified Si (001) with nitrobenzene and styrene were examined using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Electronic interfaces using organic surface dipoles can be used to control the band lineups of a semiconductor at organic/inorganic interfaces. Our results can provide insights into the charge transport characteristics of organic thin films at electronic interfaces.
In general, organic TFTs are comprised of four components: gate electrode, gate dielectric, organic active semiconductor layer, and source and drain contacts. The TFT current, in turn, is typically determined by channel length and width, carrier field effect mobility, gate dielectric thickness and permittivity, contact resistance, and biasing conditions. More recently, a number of techniques and processes have been introduced to the fabrication of OTFT circuits and displays that aim specifically at reduced fabrication cost. These include microcontact printing for the patterning of metals and dielectrics, the use of photochemically patterned insulating and conducting films, and inkjet printing for the selective deposition of contacts and interconnect pattern. In the fabrication of organic TFTs, microcontact printing has been used to pattern gate electrodes, gate dielectrics, and source and drain contacts with sufficient yield to allow the fabrication of transistors. We were fabricated a pentacene OTFTs on flexible PEN film. Au/Cr was used for the gate electrode, parylene-c was deposited as the gate dielectric, and Au/Cr was chosen for the source and drain contacts; were all deposited by ion-beam sputtering and patterned by microcontact printing and lift-off process. Prior to the deposition of the organic active layer, the gate dielectric surface was treated with octadecyltrichlorosilane(OTS) from the vapor phase. To complete the device, pentacene was deposited by thermal evaporation and patterned using a parylene-c layer. The device was shown that the carrier field effect mobility, the threshold voltage, the subthreshold slope, and the on/off current ratio were improved.
The flexible organic thin film transistor (OTFT) array to use as a switching device for an organic light emitting diode (OLED) was designed and fabricated in the microcontact printing and low-temperature processes. The gate, source, and drain electrode patterns of OTFT were fabricated by microcontact printing which is high-resolution lithography technology using polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) stamp. The OTFT array with dielectric layer and organic active semiconductor layers formed at room temperature or at a temperature tower than $40^{\circ}C$. The microcontact printing process using SAM(self-assembled monolayer) and PDMS stamp made it possible to fabricate OTFT arrays with channel lengths down to even nano size, and reduced the procedure by 10 steps compared with photolithography. Since the process was done in low temperature, there was no pattern transformation and bending problem appeared. It was possible to increase close packing of molecules by SAM, to improve electric field mobility, to decrease contact resistance, and to reduce threshold voltage by using a big dielecric.
In our previous reports [1-3], electron transport for the switching and memory devices using alkyl thiol-tethered Ru-terpyridine complex compounds with metal-insulator-metal crossbar structure has been presented. On the other hand, among organic memory devices, a memory based on the OFET is attractive because of its nondestructive readout and single transistor applications. Several attempts at nonvolatile organic memories involve electrets, which are chargeable dielectrics. However, these devices still do not sufficiently satisfy the criteria demanded in order to compete with other types of memory devices, and the electrets are generally limited to polymer materials. Until now, there is no report on nonvolatile organic electrets using nano-interfaced organic monomer layer as a dielectric material even though the use of organic monomer materials become important for the development of molecularly interfaced memory and logic elements. Furthermore, to increase a retention time for the nonvolatile organic memory device as well as to understand an intrinsic memory property, a molecular design of the organic materials is also getting important issue. In this presentation, we report on the OFET memory device built on a silicon wafer and based on films of pentacene and a SiO2 gate insulator that are separated by organic molecules which act as a gate dielectric. We proposed push-pull organic molecules (PPOM) containing triarylamine asan electron donating group (EDG), thiophene as a spacer, and malononitrile as an electron withdrawing group (EWG). The PPOM were designed to control charge transport by differences of the dihedral angles induced by a steric hindrance effect of side chainswithin the molecules. Therefore, we expect that these PPOM with potential energy barrier can save the charges which are transported to the nano-interface between the semiconductor and organic molecules used as the dielectrics. Finally, we also expect that the charges can be contributed to the memory capacity of the memory OFET device.[4]
