There has been an explosive development of nanocrystal (NC) synthesis and application due to their composition-dependent specific properties. Despite the composition, shape, and size of NCs foremost determine their physicochemical properties, the surface state and molecule conjugation also drastically change their characteristics. To make practical use of NCs, it is a prerequisite to understand the NC surface state and the degree to which they have been modified because the reaction occurs on the interface between the NCs and the surrounding medium. We report in here an analysis method to identify conjugated ligands and their binding states on semiconductor nanocrystals based on their molecular information. Surface science techniques, such as time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and FT-IR spectroscopy, are adopted based on the micro-aggregated sampling method. Typical trioctylphosphine oxide-based synthesis methods of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) have been criticized because of the peculiar effects of impurities on the synthesis processes. Since the ToF-SIMS technique provides molecular composition evidence on the existence of certain ligands, we were able to clearly identify the n-octylphosphonic acid (OPA) as a surface ligand on CdSe/ZnS QDs. Furthermore, the complementary use of the ToF-SIMS technique with the FT-IR technique could reveals the OPA ligands' binding state as bidentate complexes.

Advanced electronic application areas have strongly required new materials due to the continuous shrinking dimensions of their devices. Specially, the development and use of metal precursors for atomic layer deposition has been extensively focused on application to electronic devices. Thus the systematic design and synthesis of metal compounds with relevant chemical and physical properties, such as stability, volatility, and resistance to air and moisture are very important in the vacuum deposition fields. In many case, organic ligands for metal precursors are especially focused in the related research areas because the large scale synthesis of the metal complexes with excellent properties exclusively depends on the potential usefulness of the ligands. It is recommended for metal complexes to be in monomeric forms because mononuclear complexes generally show high vapor pressures comparing with their oligomeric structure such as dimer and trimer. Simple metal alkoxides complexes are involatile except several examples such as Ti(OiPr)4, Si(OEt)4, and Hf(OtBu)4. Thus the coordinated atom of alkoxide ligands should be crowded in its own environment with some substituents by prohibiting the coordinated atoms from bonding to another metal through oxygen-bridging configuration. Alkoxide ligands containing donor-functionalized group such as amino and alkoxy which can induce the increasing of the coordinative saturation of the metal complexes and the decreasing of the intermolecular interaction between or among the metal compounds. In this presentation, we will discuss the development of metal compounds which adopted donor-functionalized alkoxide ligands derived from their alcohols for electronic application. Some recent results on ALD using metal precursors such as tin, nickel, ruthenium, and tungsten developed in our group will be disclosed.
This research was conducted to investigate the influence of kind and concentration of organic ligands such as humic (HA) or fulvic acid (FA) on the removal of Cu or Pb from the aqueous solution employing the principles in metal-ligand complexation. Increasing HA concentration enhanced the efficiency of Cu or Pb removal, but there existed upper critical concentrations capable of forming maximum HA-metal complex. which ranged 53-289 and 42-315mg/L for Cu and Pb, respectively. At these concentrations. efficiency of removal was 70 to 95 % for Pb, but 13 to 65 % for Cu. Amounts of Cu and Pb which complexed with 100mg HA were estimated to be 7.5 and 34.1mg, respectively. FA-metal complex forming reactions were fitted significantly to the empirical models of Freundlich for Cu and Langmuir for Pb. Fulvic acid precipitated nearly 100% of Pb in solution, but formed precipitates with Cu in only 13 to 29%. Comparing organic ligands. HA had a higher removal efficiency for Cu but FA had such for Pb. Metalligand complex formation was differed from kinds and concentrations of corresponding ligands and metals. Results demonstrated that this principle has a strong potential to be employed for treating heavy metals in aqueous solution.
Interest in the synthesis and chemistry of multidentate macrocyclic ligands is currently very high. Synthetic macrocycles arise from the fact that many biologically important molecules are metal complexes of macrocyclic organic systems: and in order to understand the mechanism of action of the naturally occurring complexes. chemists have resorted to the synthesis and study of so-called model systems. The reactions of [Ni(L)(H₂O)₂]Cl₂ (L = 2,5,9,12-tetramethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) with terephtalate (tp) and 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylate (pdc) generate one-dimensional nickel(II) complexes, [Ni(L)(H₂O)₂](tp) · ₄H₂O (1) and [Ni(L)(H₂O)₂](pdc)·₄H₂O (2). The structures have been characterized by X-ray crystallography, magnetic susceptibility and spectroscopy. The crystal structures of 1 and 2 show a distorted octahedral coordination geometry around the Ni(II) ion, with secondary amines of the macrocycle and two water molecules at the trans position. Complexes 1 and 2 display the one-dimensional hydrogen-bonded infinite chains. The magnetic behavior of all compounds exhibits weak interchain antiferromagnetic interactions with J values of -1.09(3) for 1 and -1.14(2) cm-1 for 2.

We report on white organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) based on single white dopants, $Ir(pq)_2$($F_2$-ppy) and $Ir(F_2-ppy)_2$(pq), where $F_2$-ppy and pq are 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl) pyridine and 2-phenylquinoline, respectively. The similar phosphorescent lifetime of two ligands lead to luminescence emission in two ligands simultaneously. However, the emission color of the devices was reddish, because the energy was not transferred efficiently from the 4,4,N,N'-dicarbazolebiphenyl (CBP) to the $F_2$-ppy ligand, due to the small band gap of the CBP. Accordingly, we used 1,4-phenylenesis(triphenylsilane) (UGH2) with a large band gap, instead of CBP as the host material. As a result, it was possible to adjust the emission color by the host material. The luminous efficiency of the device with $Ir(F_2-ppy)_2$(pq) doped in UGH2 was about 11 cd/A at 0.06 cd/$m^2$.
Cu(II)-organic complexes were synthesized with Lewis base organic ligands including diamine, aminothiol, and dithiol to determine the reactivity for DFP hydrolysis. Results show that the aminothiol catalyst enhances the hydrolysis of DFP in three folds compared to diamine type because aminothiol has higher basicity than diamine. Due to low solubility of Cu(II)(1,2-ethane dithiol)$(NO_3)_2$, it is impossible to compare directly the rates in homogeneous condition. However, the rate of dithol complex is even 1.6 times faster than that of the diamine type. The reactivity of zeolite for DFP hydrolysis is also evaluated. NaY type does not promote the hydrolysis, but RuNaY shows relatively lower reactivity than those of Cu(II)-organic ligands complexes.
We synthesized Pd(II) complexes containing sulfoxide and cycloamine series on the basis of the fact that many workers had the foresight to suggest anticancer activites using Pd(II) complexes with sulfur, nitrogen, or nucleic acid relatives as ligands particulary. The identification and characterization of these complexes are followed; content rates of atoms and molecular weights are confirmed by Elemental Analysis and Mass spectra, bonding of metal and ligands by UV-Vis. spectra and NMR spectra, and donor sites of ligands and configuration of complexes by IR spectra. These are yellow crystals, soluble in methanol and chloroform, and insoluble in H2O and the other common organic solvents.
We have synthesized and demonstrated a red emission in Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) using phosphorescent iridium(III) complexes based on the 2-phenylpyridine ligands with electron-withdrawing carbonyl groups. Among those, a device exhibited highly efficient red-orange emission with the luminance of 20460 cd/$m^2$ at 12 V, the luminous efficiency of 22.0 cd/A at 20 mA/$cm^2$, and the $CIE_{x,y}$ coordinates of (x=0.560, y=0.439 ) at 10 V.
