  • The objective of this study was to assess the variation in the concentration of assimilable organic carbon (AOC) in a drinking water resource, and investigate the characteristics of AOC derived from algae. The seasonal change in AOC at the Kamafusa dam corresponded to changes in the algal cell number. In order to understand the relationship between AOC and algae in a water resource and water purification plant, two kinds of laboratory experiment were performed. The algal culture experiment showed that extracellular organic matter (EOM) that was released during the growth of Phormidium tenue with M-11 medium led to significant increases in the AOC concentration, but no significant variation in the AOC concentration was observed with CT medium containing a high dissolved organic carbon concentration. The chlorination experiment showed that the AOC included in EOM was not easily removed by chlorination, although the AOC included in intercellular organic matter released from the algal cells by chlorination was removed under conditions where residual chlorine was detected.

  • The objective of this study is to improve the function of an artificial culture soil which was mixed mainly with alum sludge. The artificial culture soil was more efficient than the commercial culture soil for the growth of perennial ryegrass and bush clover. Artificial culture soil was prepared paper sludge(40%), alum sludge(30%), sewage sludge(20%), and compost (10%). This artificial culture soil had no adverse effect on phytotoxicity tests. The alum sludge gives some water holding capacity and cohesion strength to the soil enought to require no other addition of adhesive agents. The leaching of aluminum from the alum sludge was negligible even at very low pH(=2) due to the mixed compost.

  • This qualitative study identifies the perceptions of organic food from the top two largest demographic profiles in Malaysia, which are the Malay and Chinese consumers. A total of four factors have been identified in previous research which are the most influential factors in regards to organic food purchase intentions and are categorized thematically - (1) health consciousness, (2) taste, (3) willingness to pay, as well as (4) family and culture influences. The understanding of the preferences and influences is crucial for foodservice providers and/or operators to not only attract new individuals to try organic food but also to minimize the uncertainty that arises in the food industry and achieve higher goals by understanding customers' perceptions.

  • A kerosene fungus of Cladosporium resinae NK-1 was examined for its ability to degrade individual n-alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and its organic solvent-tolerance was investigated by making use of the water-organic solvent suspension culture method. It grew on a wide range of solvents of varying hydrophobicities and it was found to have tolerance to various kinds of toxic organic solvents (10%, v/v) such as n-alkanes, cyclohexane, xylene, styrene, and toluene. A hydrocarbon degradation experiment indicated that NK-1 had a greater n-alkane degrading ability compared to that of the other selected strains. C. resinae NK-1, which could utilize 8-16 carbon chain-length n-alkanes of medium chain-length as a carbon source, could not assimilate the shorter chain-length n-alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons tested so far. The n-alkane degrading enzyme activity was found in the mycelial extract of the organism.

  • This study aimed to analyze the effect of demographic characteristics of consumers and quality recognition factors on purchase intention of organic wine, and to provide preliminary data necessary for the development of wine industry. By factor analysis of collected surveys, quality recognition factors of both the experienced and non-experienced group of organic wine environment/health, varieties of grapes, price, and four brand elements. First, among demographic characteristics, only income level hae a significant influence on the changes in quality recognition causes. Each of quality recognition causes of organic wine had a significant relation with purchase intent. The result of our analysis suggested that 'environment/health' was most influential for the experienced group, and 'health' was most influential for the non-experienced group. Therefore, this hypothesis is supported.

  • The in vitro culture of rice panicles is a culturing technique only panicle without other organs in culture solution containing organic substance, so that would be useful to study how assimilate supply affects grain development and maturation. To find the optimum stage for in vitro culture, rice panicles grown in greenhouse were sampled periodically after anthesis and cultured in nutrient medium. The panicles older than 1 weeks after anthesis had produced normal grains. Grain-filling was apparently dependent upon sucrose concentration (8-12 %) in medium, but not affected by nitrogen concentration supplied with glutamine. As far as rice panicle was supplied with sucrose and N in nutrient medium, grains continued accumulation of dry matter and maturation regardless to light condition. Considerably, grain-filling was improved when panicles were positioned horizontally inside flask, so that each grain was partially submerged to nutrient medium.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of nutrients and culture conditions on morphology during the seed culture of C. acremonium ATCC 20339 Morphological factors such as hyphal length number of tips number of arthrospores were observed to investigate the relationship between seed morphology and CPC production. During the time course of seed culture, hyphal length was shortened and the number of arthrospores increased rapidly On the other hand the number of tips deceased rapidly and this was closely related to the hyphal length Mixed nitrogen sources of 3% solybean meal and 1% cotton seed flour were determined as the proper organic nitrogen sources, in terms of the morphological factors in the seed culture. This fact was proven in batch culture for the production of Cephalosporin C. It was also found that a proper agitation speed enhanced the morphological differentiation of C. acremonium ATCC 20339, thus improving the production of Cephalosporin C.

  • We investigated the possibility of utilizing spent mushroom culture-medium as raw material to produce organic compost. Mushroom culture-medium contained 2.69% nitrogen, 41.07% carbon, and 0.99% phosphoric acid. Nitrogen and carbon content in rice bran were 3.08% and 47.34%, respectively. Nitrogen, carbon, and phosphoric acid content in mushroom Pleurotus eryngii were 3.41%, 34.63%, and 1.70%, respectively. Our study aimed to evaluate the degree of decay of compost produced from the substrate, used to culture King Oyster mushrooms by analyzing seed germination indexes in cucumber, radish, lettuce, and Chinese cabbage. Our results showed that compost from spent mushroom culture-medium completed the stabilization process in 4 to 6 weeks, as evaluated by the appropriate organic compost maturity point for the plantation.

  • The purpose of this study is exploring the expressional characteristics of organic fashion design different from the past by analyzing the expressional characteristics of organic fashion design dependent on the digital paradigm and simultaneously suggesting the theoretical data required to understand the changing trend of organic design in relation to the paradigm of the age. The results of the research is as follows; The expressional characteristics of organic fashion design according to the digital age appeared to have same aspects. Pluralism respecting multi-culture, hybrid of multi-meaning image, circulation that can consistently circulated, non-hierarchical post-structure, de-boundary through dissolution of genres, digital nomad considering mobility, human centered through significant sensitivity, de-materialization of assimilation between reality and non-reality, conceptualization given the concept of designer, technology combining with digital technology. This study found that organic fashion design in the digital age has the same conceptual context as periodical paradigm freely circulating consistently by organically combining each individual. This can be understood as the trend of design implied in conceptual context that organic fashion design requires periodical paradigm.
