Fruit Quality, Antioxidant Capacity and Nutrients between Organic and Conventional kiwifruit in Korea

  • Organic kiwifruits were smaller fruit size but had higher magnesium and dry matter content than conventional, meanwhile, fruit soluble solid content was similar to conventional. There were no significant difference in polyphenol contents and antioxidative capacity between organic and conventional although there were considerable variations among sample orchards. Several minerals were also similar levels in both systems.

경북지역 복숭아의 주요 병해 발생 및 생태 (Incidence and Ecology of Major diseases on Peach in Gyeongbuk Province)

  • Occurrence and incidences of major diseases of peach (Prunus persicae pv. vulgaris), leaf curl caused by Taphrina deformans, bacterial shot hole caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. pruni, brown rot caused by Monilinia fructicola, and anthracnose caused by Glomerella cingulata in peach orchards in Cheongdo and Kyungsan areas of Gyeongbuk province, Korea, were investigated for four years from 1990 to 1993. In leaf curl and bacterial shot hole which mainly occurred on leaves, frist disease occurrences were dated from late April to early May. The maximum leaf curl incidence was dated in mid May, while dates of the maximum bacterial shot hole incidence varied from mid May to mid August depending on the years surveyed. In brown rot and anthracnose on fruit, the first disease occurrence dates ranged from early June to early August; however, the maximum disease incidences for both were invariably dated in late August. The disease incidences on the dates of the maximum incidences differed year by year, and the averages for the 4 years were 13.2%, 10.5%, 10.9% and 3.8% for leaf curl, bacterial shot hole, brown rot and anthracnose, respectively. Especially in the leaf curl disease, the first disease occurrence dates and the maximum disease incidences matched with the amounts of precipitation of rain up to April, suggesting that the disease occurrence may be related to the precipitation during the early season. The occurrence of leaf curl was somewhat higher in cultivar“Baekmi”than other cultivars. All of the major disease occurred more in hilly orchards than in plain ones.

환상박피와 비가림 시설을 이용한 참다래 꽃썩음병의 경종적 방제 (Cultural Control of Bacterial Blossom Blight Using Trunk Girdling and Rainproof Installation over Kiwifruit Trees)

  • 참다래 과수원에서 환상박피와 비가림시설은 꽃썩음병을 효과적으로 경감시켜주는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 참다래 개화기 약 45일 전인 4월 10일경에 참다래 주간부위에 20${\sim}$30 mm 폭으로 환상박피를 하면 꽃썩음병을 효과적으로 예방할 수 있었는데, 주간부위의 환상박피 높이는 방제효과에 영향을 미치지 않았다. 비닐을 이용한 비가림시설은 파풍망시설보다 비가림방식에 관계없이 꽃썩음병 예방에 효과적이었다. 참다래 개화기 약 75일 전인 3월 10일경에 부분비닐피복식 비가림시설을 하면 참다래 꽃썩음병의 발생을 거의 완벽하게 방제할 수 있었다. 환상박피와 부분비닐피복식 비가림시설은 참다래 과수원에서 환경친화적인 꽃썩음병 방제방법으로 실용화할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

Epidemiological Characteristics of Scab of Japanese Apricot in Korea

  • Scabs caused by Venturia carpophila greatly reduce the quality of the fruits of the Japanese apricot (Prunus mume) when the disease is not properly managed. The disease produces a superficial blemish that is unlikely to affect the overall yield of processed fruit, but reduce the value of fruit intended for the fresh market. Incidence rates of scab at sprayed and unsprayed orchards range from 0% to 21.5% and from 30.2% to 100%, respectively, in the major cultivation regions of Jeonnam Province during the growing season of 2009. The trends in disease progress were quite similar, regardless of regions, and cultivar Namgo was relatively less damaged by scab compared to cultivar Cheonmae among the tested Japanese apricot cultivars. The fruits on branches 1.5 m above the infected Japanese apricot trees and the stem-end parts of the infected fruits were more severely damaged by scabs, possibly because of rain and run-off facilitate dissemination of conidia of V. carpophila and subsequent infection of the fruits or branches. The conidia of V. carpophila were dispersed from March 24 to April 26 in 2010, and more conidia were dispersed from 2-year-old branches than 1-year-old branches. Since the control efficacies were higher than 90% after more than two applications of Trifloxystrobin WG at 10-day-intervals from mid April, it is that effective fungicides be applied at least two times at 10-day-intervals from the middle of April to manage scabs of Japanese apricot in orchards.

유기재배 과원에서 큰검정풍뎅이 방제를 위한 기피 살충자재 선발 (Screening of Essential Oil Repellents against the Organic Pear Pest Holotrichia parallela (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae))

  • The study investigated the efficacy of four different essential oils on the repellent responses of large black chafer (Holotrichia parallela) Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) in organic pear (Pyrus pyrifolia) orchards. Cinnamon, pine, peppermint, and eucalyptus oils were used, and the behavioral responses and repellent effects against H. parallela were investigated under laboratory and field conditions. Adult beetle responses to different oils were examined using a Y-tube olfactometer in the laboratory and four absorbent blocks with each oil in the field. The repellent responses rates of H. parallela were 100% for cinnamon oil; however, only 67% of adult beetles avoided peppermint and eucalyptus oil in the Y-tube olfactometer bioassay. In the field tests, the least damage to leaves was observed on trees treated with cinnamon oil, whereas the most damage was observed in the control (non-treated) trees and those treated with peppermint oil, followed by eucalyptus and pine oil. Therefore, cinnamon oil can be used as a repellent to avoid damage form large black chafers in organic pear orchards.

Diversity of Bacillus thuringiensis Strains Isolated from Citrus Orchards in Spain and Evaluation of Their Insecticidal Activity Against Ceratitis capitata

  • A survey of Bacillus thuringiensis (Berliner) strains isolated from Spanish citrus orchards has been performed, and the strains were tested for insecticidal activity against the Mediterranean fruit fly Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), a key citrus pest in Spain. From a total of 150 environmental samples, 376 isolates were selected, recording a total B. thuringiensis index of 0.52. The collection was characterized by means of phase-contrast microscopy, SDS-PAGE, and PCR analysis with primer pairs detecting toxin genes cry1, cry2, cry3, cry4, cry5, cry7, cry8, cry9, cry10, cry11, cry12, cry14, cry17, cry19, cry21, cry27, cry39, cry44, cyt1, and cyt2. Diverse crystal inclusion morphologies were identified: bipyramidal (45%), round (40%), adhered to the spore (7%), small (5%), and irregular (3%). SDS-PAGE of spore-crystal preparations revealed 39 different electrophoresis patterns. All primer pairs used in PCR tests gave positive amplifications in strains of our collection, except for primers for detection of cry3, cry19, cry39, or cry44 genes. Strains containing cry1, cry2, cry4, and cry27 genes were the most abundant (48.7%, 46%, 11.2%, and 8.2% of the strains, respectively). Ten different genetic profiles were found, although a total of 109 strains did not amplify with the set of primers used. Screening for toxicity against C. capitata adults was performed using both spore-crystal and soluble fractions. Mortality levels were less than 30%. We have developed a large and diverse B. thuringiensis strain collection with huge potential to control several agricultural pests; however, further research is needed to find out Bt strains active against C. capitata.

구릉지 과원의 고도에 따른 기온변이 (Air Temperature Variation Affected by Site Elevation in Hilly Orchards)

  • 2001년 9월부터 2002년 6월까지 소규모 집수역 내 고도가 다른 3개 지점(해발 49, 104, 253m)에서 30분 간격으로 기온을 측정하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 평균기온은 100m 당 0.2$^{\circ}C$씩 하강하였으며, 이 감율양상은 낮 시간대 지형에 의한 일사 수광량 변이에 의해 증폭되었다. 그러나 감율양상은 일몰시점부터 고도가 높을수록 기온이 더 높아지는 역전양상으로 전환되어 다음 날 일출시점까지 지속되었다. 이에 따라 계곡기저의 일 최저기온이 253m 지점에 비해 더 낮은 날이 연중 67%를 차지하였고 연평균 기온편차는 1.4$^{\circ}C$ 이었다. 맑은 날의 최저기온 역전강도는 겨울보다 봄가을에 더 커지며 대상지역에서 관측된 최대값은 6$^{\circ}C$ 이었다. 흐리고 비온 날의 최저기온은 감율양상이 지속되었으며 봄가을보다 겨울철의 기온감율이 더 컸다.

'후지' 사과 과실의 형태 결정 요인 간 상관 (Correlation among Conformation Parameters in 'Fuji' Apple Fruit)

  • 경북 안동과 영양 지역 과수원에서 적숙기에 수확한 '후지' 사과 과실을 중량별로 분류한 후, 과중, 종자 수, 종자 중량과의 관계를 분석하고 이들 요인과 과형지수 및 기형지수와의 상관관계를 조사하였다. 과실당 평균 종자수와 무게는 안동과수원의 경우 8.9개, 종자 중량 0.64g이었고 영양 과수원은 6.3개, 0.47g이었다. 두 과수원의 조사자료를 종합하여 분석한 결과, 과중은 종자 중량과 정의 상관관계가 있었던 반면 종자의 수와는 상관관계가 낮은 것으로 분석되었다. 과형지수는 종자 수나 종자 중량과 미미한 상관관계를 보였으나 과중과 정의 상관관계를 보였다. 과실의 기형지수는 종자수가 많고 종자 중량이 큰 안동과수원 과실에서 낮은 경향을 보였으며 종자의 수 또는 종자 중량과 고도로 유의한 부의 상관관계를 보였다.

단감원의 최근 농약 사용실태 (Current State of Pesticide Application in Sweet Persimmon Orchards in Korea)

  • 단감원에서의 농약 사용 실태를 2000년(62농가)과 2001년(17농가)에 단감 주산지인 진주, 사천, 창원, 창녕, 김해 등지에서 단감 재배 농가를 대상으로 설문과 방제력 수집을 통하여 조사하였다. 단감원의 년 평균 농약 살포 횟수는 2000년에 7.6회, 2001년에 7.7회였으며, 약제를 살포하는 농가의 비율은 일년 중에서 6월과 7월에 가장 높았다. 살포한 살균, 살충제의 종류는 2000년에는 각각 36종과 34종이었으며 2001년에는 각각 22종과 23종이었다. 최종 약제 살포시기는 9월 중순이 가장 많았다. 단감원에서 많이 사용하고 있는 살균제로는 2000년에는 mancozeb과 thiophanata-methyl, benomyl순이었으며, 2001년에는 lime sulfur와 benomyl, carbendazim순이었다. 살충제는 두 해 모두 deltamethrin, methidathion, fenitrothion순이었다. 사용한 약제가 단감이나 감에 고시되어있는 비율은 품목수 기준으로 50% 내외 이었다.
