  • The detailed flow characteristics inside a compression chamber due to the orbiting motion of a scroll is studied numerically. The orbiting motion of a scroll is modelled at 7 orbiting angles. At each orbit angle, the central compression chamber is modelled. All computations are carried by using an in-house code. It is based on the SIMPLE algorithm. Computation results show that the flow structure inside the compression chamber is dependent on the orbit angle. The pressure variation inside the compression chamber also shows great dependence on the orbit angle. The pressure variation shows local maxima when the orbiting motion of a scroll directs toward the center of the compression chamber.

  • In co-orbiting scroll compressor, the two scroll members are to orbit with independent radii, producing a relative orbit motion between them. One scroll member is driven by the crank mechanism while the motion of the other member is determined by geometrical constraints and reacting forces. This paper presents an analytical study on the performance of a co-orbiting scroll compressor. The following results have been obtained: Radial contact force between the scroll wraps is virtually free from the centrifugal force of the orbiting scroll member. The frictional losses are somewhat increased due to the complicated drive mechanism, yielding to a little lower EER compared to conventional radially compliant scroll compressors .

  • Dynamic behavior of a scroll compressor has been investigated analytically. The equations of motion of moving elements of the scroll compressor such as the orbiting scroll, anti-rotation device, slider bush, and the crank shaft with eccentric crank pin have been set up. As the solutions of these equations, reaction forces between the moving elements, and also between the moving elements and the compressor frame have been calculated. The reaction forces from the moving elements to the frame are the unbalanced forces, which produce accelerations of the compressor body. These accelerations can be used as a measure of the compressor vibration. The major contributions to the unbalanced forces come from the orbiting movement of the orbiting scroll.

  • The operational NOAA satellite temperature soundings are utilized to determine the horizontal wind and vertical motion fields for a polar low case over the East Asian region by solving the nonlinear balance equation and the omega equation. Preliminary results demonstrate that the balanced wind and vertical motion fields derived from the satellite data give reasonable synoptic patterns associated with the polar low. This encourages the use of satellite information as inputs in the numerical weather prediction models.

  • It is important to harmonize the occlusion with TMJ and neuromuscular system. However, clinically, how to harmonize is very difficult. The mandibular movement is the motion in which all component part of stomatognathic system participate. This study was performed to compare mandibular movement of mandibular prognathic patients group with that of normal group, to ascertain which components of mandibular movement have differences between two groups, and to use for occlusal treatment of mandibular movement. Thirteen adult who have physiologically normal occlusion and are free of TMJ dysfunction were selected as a control group(Group 1). Eight adult who are mandibular prognathic patient and have more than four anterior teeth crossbite, therefore have not anterior guidance function and have posterior interference at protrusion were selected as a experimental group(Group 2). Electronic pantograph, Denar Pantronic (Denar Corp., U.SA.), was used to record mandibular movement. Pantronic survey was performed by using an arbitrary hinge axis according to manufacturer's direction. Of the Pantronic recordings, immediate side shift (ISS), progressive side shift (PSS), orbiting condylar path (ORB), protrusive condylar path (PRO) between two groups were compared and analysed. The results were as follows: 1. The average protrusive and orbiting condylar inclination of mandibular prognathic patient$(28.44^{\circ},\;36.94^{\circ})$ was significantly lower than those of normal group$(40.15^{\circ},\;48.00^{\circ})$ (P<0.01). 2. There was no statistically significant difference between .the average immediate and progressive side shift of mandibular prognathic patient $(0.37mm,\;6.19^{\circ})$ and those of normal group$(0.52mm.\;5.96^{\circ})$ (P>0.01). 3. The significant correlation was found between orbiting condylar inclination and protrusive condylar inclination.

  • The theoretical investigation is done on the dynamic behavior of a crank shaft used in a scroll compressor. The compression performance of a scroll compressor is directly influenced by the sealing characteristics between fixed and orbiting scrolls, which is related with the dynamic behavior of a scroll compressor. Analyzing the constrained power transmitting system is came to be of importance, accordingly. The equations of motion and interacting forces of a scroll compressor are derived and solved numerically in this paper. The locus of the crank shaft is also obtained by employing the reaction force caused by the oil film of journal bearing. The results show that the crank shaft of a scroll compressor has considerably stable rotating locus.

  • We examined thousands of light curves of stars brighter than 18.0 mag in I band and less than mean magnitude error of 0.1 mag in V band from the OGLE-III eclipsing binary catalogue, and found 90 new binary systems exhibiting apsidal motion. In this study, the samples of apsidal motion stars in the SMC were increased by 250 percent than previously known. In order to determine the period of the apsidal motion for the binaries, we analysed in detail both light curves and eclipse timings using the MACHO and OGLE photometric database obtained for about 20 yrs. For the eclipse timing diagrams of the systems, new times of minimum light were derived from the full light curve combined at intervals of one yr from the survey data. The binaries presented in this paper have apsidal motion periods in the range of 12-918 yrs. An additional short-term oscillation was detected in five systems (OGLE-SMC-ECL-1634, 1947, 3035, 4946, and 5382), which most likely arise from the existence of a third body orbiting each eclipsing binary. All of the selected systems can be used for the statistical study of the interior structure of the stars in the SMC through their apsidal motions due to the homogeneous data and consistent analysis methods.

  • This study presents a way of improving the stability of fixed scroll in scroll compressors. For the scroll compressor whose fixed scroll is designed to move in the axial direction for the axial compliance, the fixed scroll is under the influence of the overturning moment produced by internal gas forces. Unless the overturning moment is properly compensated by the moments of reaction forces at the suspension of the fixed scroll to the compressor frame, the fixed scroll would exhibit wobbling motion, increasing gas leakage through the gap induced by the wobbling of the fixed scroll between the two scroll members. The conditions on which the wobbling motion can be suppressed have been found analytically; The axial position of the fixed scroll suspension should be made within a certain range. The upper limit of this range is the axial location for the o-rings which are inserted between the fixed scroll and the back pressure chamber to promote sealing for the gas in the back pressure chamber. And the lower limit is mainly determined by the magnitude of the axial sealing force. As long as the axial sealing force is not negative over all crank angles, the lower limit is not above the mid-height of the scroll wrap. Larger axial sealing force lower the lower limit.
