It is clinically important to determine the physiologic mandibular position as the therapeutic position of the patients who needs the oral rehabilitation and occlusal treatment. Several methods have been employed for the recording the mandibular position. The gothic arch tracer is one of methods to record the mandibular position. The purpose of this study is to record the border position, chewing position, and myocentric position using the newly developed intra oral tracer in 10 subjects with TMJ clicking sound and 10 subjects without TMJ clinking sound.. This study showed that newly developed intra oral tracer allowed clinician the determination of the treatment position on the same horizontal plate which can be used in the full mouth rehabilitation and occlusal treatments. There was no statistically significant difference between clicking group and nonclicking group in the distance of border position-chewing position and the distance of border position-myocentric centric position.

Objectives: Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder. These patients lose their teeth at a young age and are in need of prosthetic rehabilitation. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the success of dental implant placement in these patients. Materials and Methods: An electronic search was performed in PubMed Central, Scopus, and Web of Science using the keyword "Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome" AND "dental implant" OR "prosthodontics". Articles reporting implant placement in patients with PLS until July 2019 were included. Results: Assessment of the included 11 articles reporting 15 cases showed 136 implant placements in these patients. Implant failure occurred in 3 patients (20 implants). The peri-implantitis and failure rate was higher in the maxilla. Meta-analysis showed the probability of failure to be 7% (95% confidence interval [CI] 0%-31%) for maxillary implants and 2% (95% CI 0%-9%) for mandibular implants. The follow-up time ranged between 1 and 20 years. Healing after bone graft and implant placement in these patients was uneventful. Conclusion: Dental implants may be a viable treatment option for PLS patients. Implantation can help preserve alveolar bone if the patients' immunological and growing conditions are well-considered and proper oral hygiene and compliance with the maintenance program are continued.
Objectives : This study was performed to investigate the effects of Semen Persicae(SP) on muscle type change and vascularization effect by measuring expression of Myosin heavy chain (MHC) and Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) protein in the Middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAo) rats. Methods : The middle cerebral artery was occluded, SP extraction was administrated for 4 days. The effects of SP on muscle type change and vascularization were measured. Results : 1. VEGF protein expressions in the Semen Persicae oral administration group of MCAo group were increased compared to the control group. 2. There were no significant difference between the Semen Persicae oral administration of MCAo group and the control group in MHC isoform (Type I, Type IIa) expression change. Conclusions : The present study demonstrates the effect of Semen Persicae in the vascularizing after ischemia, but has no significant effect in musle type change and the improvement of musle atrophy.
Objective : This review aims at analyzing Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) therapies, using for oral health to know current use of CAM in dental area by analyzing randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs). Method : We searched the following 6 electronic databases until 1 July 2014. : Pubmed, Medline, Embase, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database(AMED), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature(CINAHL), the Cochrane Library. We included parallel RCTs and cross-over RCTs that assessed the efficacy of CAM regardless of blinding and language. Results : A total of 154 RCT articles were included. There were 2-arm parallel study design(69.5%), 3-arm parallel study design(20.8%), 4-arm parallel study design(4.5%) and Cross-over design(5.2%). Complementary and alternative medicine RCTs in oral health tend to increase in the early-2000s and in the mid-2010s. In addition, 154 citations were classified according to diseases and interventions that categorized Natural Products studies(68.2%), Mind and Body Practices studies(31.8%). We classified in detail that vitamin and mineral therapies(29.9%), dietary supplements(24.7%), acupuncture(23.3%), Herbal medicine(13.6%), homeopathy (2.6%), energy therapies(2.6%), Massage(1.9%), biofeedback(0.6%), traditional medicine(0.6%). Conclusion : Increasing publications and diverse interventions regarding CAM for oral health is observed by analyzing RCTs from the literature review. Further studies are needed to be performed as systematic reviews to verify their effectiveness and the research to inquire into side effect.
Kole's Anterior segmental osteotomy of the mandible is commonly used to close an anterior open bite, to depress an elevated anterior dentoalveolar segment, or to retrude or advance a dentoalveolar segment. The procedure is often combined with an anterior maxillary segmental osteotomy to correct bimaxillary protrusion. We report 53-year-old woman who the extruded state of mandibular anterior alveolar segment was corrected using an mandibular anterior alveolar segmental osteotomy and dental implantation of the anterior maxilla. We planned to remove the old prosthesis, and then perform an anterior mandibular segmental osteotomy and implant restoration of the anterior maxilla. We suggest that anterior segmental osteotomy is very useful for rehabilitating edentulous patients with malaligned alveolar segment.
Purpose: A purpose of this study was to identify the effects of cold water gargling on thirst, oral cavity condition and sore throat in orthopedics surgery patients who underwent general anesthesia. Methods: Pretest-posttest non-synchronized design with a nonequivalent control group was used. A total of 52 participants were conveniently selected and assigned to each group. The experimental group gargled hourly with cold water for 8 hours after operation. The control group received wet gauze as needed. We compared the thirst, oral cavity condition and sore throat at 0, 2, 4 and 8 hours after operation. Results: The score of thirst and oral cavity condition was lower in the experimental group than in the control group. However, there was no significant differences in the levels of sore throat between the experimental and control group. Conclusion: These findings suggest that cold water gargling can be a useful nursing intervention for alleviating thirst and improving oral condition for patients with orthopedic surgery after general anesthesia.
A 20 year-old cleft lip and palate patient came for occlusal rehabilitation, but the constricted maxilla and early loss of posterior teeth called for an unusual treatment modalities. Distraction osteogenesis in the edentulous areas followed by artificial bone graft, dental implant along with orthodontic tooth movement were planed. Multidisciplinary treatment enabled both esthetic and functional oral rehabilitation of this patient.

Objectives: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent and disabling joint disease in the world. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) exercise is a widely used treatment and could be a beneficial and long-term tool for treating TMJ OA. The present study aims to evaluate the effects of therapeutic exercise in the conservative treatment of TMJ OA. Materials and Methods: A single-group experimental pre-post test was performed. We included patients who met the diagnostic criteria for TMJ OA. Outcome variables were pain intensity (visual analogue scale), functionality (Helkimo index), and structural changes (ultrasound). Follow-up periods were at months 1, 3, and 6. The intervention included a home-based program with thermotherapy, manual therapy, and therapeutic exercise during the entire follow-up period. Results: We included 15 patients and 26 joints, all women with a median age of 57 years (range, 49-62 years). Median change in pain intensity on joint palpation, mouth opening, and at rest at the first month was 47.5 mm, 51 mm, and 60 mm, respectively, and 48 mm, 49.5 mm, and 42.5 mm, at six months (P=0.001). The Helkimo index showed significant improvement in medians from baseline severe dysfunction (17 points) to minimal dysfunction at three and six months (2 points) (P=0.001). Ultrasound showed improved disc position. Conclusion: This study demonstrated significant improvements in pain, function, and joint disc position and represents a valuable tool for the long-term treatment of patients with TMJ OA.
