The Effects of Critical Friends on the Self-Esteem and Academic Oral Presentation Ability of Teacher Students

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of critical friends on self-esteem and the academic oral presentation ability of undergraduate students. A pretest was conducted in the first week of the semester. A pre-academic oral presentation preparation was held from the second week to the seventh week and followed by pedagogical speech activities from the eighth week to the eleventh week. The research instruments are Academic oral presentation behavior and self-esteem evaluation forms. The samples were 37 third year undergraduate students, who were purposively selected from the educational technology class at the Chulalongkorn University. The statistics used for analyzing quantitative data are frequencies, means, standard deviations, one sample t-tests, and Pearson's Product-Moment Correlations. It was found that the 37 third year undergraduate teacher students had higher self-esteem at the statistically significant level of .05 and academic oral presentation scores after the activity were statistically significant at the .05 level.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a lecture on oral presentation and to evaluate changes in anger expression, assertive behavior, and self-esteem after lecture on oral presentation. Methods: The design was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The participants were university students in nursing, of which 17 were assigned to the experimental group and 15 to the control group. The education was carried out for 2 hours, once a week for 14 weeks. Data was analyzed with SPSS/WIN 14 program, and included chi-square test, independent t-test, and repeated measure ANOVA. Results: Lecture on oral presentation showed significant differences in the changes of anger expression (F=10.122, p=.003) and assertive behavior (F=8.498, p=.007). Conclusion: Findings suggest that this lecture on oral presentation was effective in changing students' anger expression and assertive behavior. Therefore this lecture on oral presentation is recommended for inclusion in education for university students in nursing.

Today, poster and oral presentation are recognized as being of equal status, Regardless of which format you select, remember that the poster or oral presentation must he carefully planned, clear and concise, oriented to transfer information effectively, and hold the attention of the learner.

Fate of abstracts presented at the Turkish Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (TAOMS) meetings between 2007 and 2009

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the rate of peer-reviewed publication of abstracts presented at the annual meetings of the Turkish Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (TAOMS) and to identify the time to publication, subspecialty, and study design. Materials and Methods: All abstracts accepted for presentation at a TAOMS meeting between 2007 and 2009 were identified from a book of abstracts and were searched for publication using PubMed and Google Scholar. The following variables were evaluated: publication rate, type of presentation (oral or poster), time to publication, subspecialty, study design, and name of the journal in which the article was published. Results: A total of 478 abstracts were presented at the TAOMS meetings between 2007 and 2009. Of these, 140 abstracts (29.3%) were subsequently published in peer-reviewed journals, including 38.2% of oral presentations and 26.6% of poster presentations. The mean time from presentation to publication was 22 months. Regarding publication fields, research and emerging technologies presentations had the highest publication rate (100%). With regard to study type, animal study (70.0%) and basic research (55.0%) had the highest publication rates. Conclusion: Only 29.3% of abstracts presented at the TAOMS meeting were subsequently published as full-text articles. This rate was found to be similar to the previously reported publication rates in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

오럴 프레젠테이션을 통한 영어수업모형 (A model of EFL instruction using oral presentation for Korean intermediate learners)

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of presentation-based instruction and to suggest a model of instruction targeted to the Korean intermediate level students learning English as a foreign language (EFL). To achieve this objective, the author examined how the acquisition of practical English through oral presentation would enhance the students' learning motivation, language abilities, and communicative competence in concrete situations. It was confirmed that the trained leader and systematic teaching and learning are needed to maximize the effects of presentation-based instruction. In doing so, the author compared and analyzed the collected data in order to support the validity of this teaching method. It was further pointed out that the teacher should have a close look at the roles of the presenter and learner in an effort to work out the usefulness of such an instruction model. The method of presentation in classroom settings would be a practical mode to attain the essential purpose of EFL teaching particularly to get over the drawbacks of Korean students' communicative competence. As a result, it would be an effective teaching method to meet the nation's long-standing demands for EFL education.

효과적인 법정 프레젠테이션을 위한 비주얼커뮤니케이션 디자인 연구 (A Study on Visual Communication Design for Effective Trial Presentation)

  • 구술심리주의의 확산, 국민참여재판의 도입 등 빠른 변화의 흐름 가운데 놓여있는 한국의 법정 환경은 구술주의의 단점을 효과적으로 보완할 수 있는 법정 프레젠테이션의 체계적인 도입을 필요로 하고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 한국의 법정 환경을 토대로 법정 프레젠테이션의 개념과 유형, 그리고 효용성을 정리 및 분석하였다. 또한 법정 프레젠테이션의 특수성을 고려하여 미국과 한국에서 가장 범용으로 사용되는 법정 프레젠테이션 도구들을 비교 분석하였다. 이러한 분석을 토대로, 한국의 법정 환경에 최적화된 프레젠테이션 도구가 갖춰야할 요소로서 1. 다양한 형태 매체의 삽입 용이성, 2. 그래픽 스타일 스펙트럼의 적절한 제한, 3. 그래픽 도구의 사용 편의성, 4. 시스템적 기능성 등의 요소를 제안하였다. 이와 같은 제안은 주장 전개와 내용 전달에 있어서 명료성, 정확성, 효율성 등을 강화할 뿐만 아니라 프레젠테이션 비주얼커뮤니케이션 측면의 심미성과 통일성을 증진하기 위한 것이다.

L2 학습과 의사소통 능력 향상을 위한 대안적 접근으로서의 구두 발표 (Oral Presentations as an Alternative Approach to Enhance L2 Learning and Communication Skills)

  • 본 연구는 대학생들의 인식을 통해 의사소통 능력과 향후 진로의 관점에서 L2 구두 발표가 갖는 효과에 대해 살펴보고자 했다. 질적 연구 방식을 활용한 연구로 초급반과 중급반에서 L2 구두 발표 수업을 수강한 13명의 대학생이 심층적이고 반 구조화된 면접에 참여했다. 학생들의 다양한 의견으로 도출된 결과에 따르면, 구두 발표가 크게 세 가지면에서 긍정적인 효과를 갖는 것으로 나타났다. L2 구두 발표는 말하기, 쓰기, 읽기, 쓰기의 네 가지 언어 영역을 향상시키고, 발표에 대한 자신감을 고취시키며, 향후 취업에도 경쟁력을 불어 넣어 주는 것으로 인식되었다. L2 학습자들에게는 어려운 과제이지만, 구두 발표는 학교 수업과 직업 수행의 환경에서 요구되는 효과적인 의사소통능력을 배양하는 데 필수적인 요소로 평가되었다.

Vanilloid Receptor 1 Agonists, Capsaicin and Resiniferatoxin, Enhance MHC Class I-restricted Viral Antigen Presentation in Virus-infected Dendritic Cells

  • DCs, like the sensory neurons, express vanilloid receptor 1 (VR1). Here we demonstrate that the VR1 agonists, capsaicin (CP) and resiniferatoxin (RTX), enhance antiviral CTL responses by increasing MHC class I-restricted viral antigen presentation in dendritic cells (DCs). Bone marrow-derived DCs (BM-DCs) were infected with a recombinant vaccinia virus (VV) expressing OVA (VV-OVA), and then treated with CP or RTX. Both CP and RTX increased MHC class I-restricted presentation of virus-encoded endogenous OVA in BM-DCs. Oral administration of CP or RTX significantly increased MHC class I-restricted OVA presentation by splenic and lymph node DCs in VV-OVA-infected mice, as assessed by directly measuring OVA peptide SIINFEKL-Kb complexes on the cell surface and by performing functional assays using OVA-specific CD8 T cells. Accordingly, oral administration of CP or RTX elicited potent OVA-specific CTL activity in VV-OVA-infected mice. The results from this study demonstrate that VR1 agonists enhance anti-viral CTL responses, as well as a neuro-immune connection in anti-viral immune responses.

Intraoral HIV-associated Burkitt's lymphoma: a rare case report with special emphasis on differential diagnosis

  • Individuals with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection present with unique intraoral manifestations of various neoplasms. Intraoral HIV-associated Burkitt's lymphoma is a rare presentation, especially in patients of Indian origin and may present as an initial sign of HIV. The objective of this paper is to report a rare case of Burkitt's lymphoma in an HIV-positive Indian patient along with a special emphasis on differential diagnosis. A 30-year-old Indian female presented with a solitary, well-defined, exophytic mass extending anteroposteriorly and buccolingually from the 35th to 38th regions with no evidence of intraosseous extension. An incisional biopsy was performed, and histopathology showed sheets of neoplastic lymphoid cells with numerous tingible body macrophages with clear cytoplasm, presenting a starry sky appearance, suggesting a diagnosis of BL. The tumor cells were positive for CD10, CD20, c-myc, and Epstein-Barr virus, with a nearly 100% Ki-67 proliferative index. The patient tested positive for HIV. This report indicates the importance of immunohistochemical analysis to differentiate Burkitt's lymphoma from other similar lesions like diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Thorough knowledge of the clinical presentation, etiopathogenesis, histopathology, and immunoprofile of intraoral HIV-associated Burkitt's lymphoma is essential among clinicians and pathologists.

발표 담화의 관여 전략 연구 (A Study on Involvement Strategies in Oral Presentation Discourse)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the involvement strategies in presentation discourse of Korean native speakers and to compare strategies in presentation of Korean learners and international graduate students with that. For this study, the presentation discourse of 13 Korean undergraduates, 21 Korean graduate students, 6 Korean advanced learners, 8 international graduate students was analyzed. The results of the study showed that Korean native speakers used many types of involvement strategies such as conversing, expressing solidarity, expressing closeness. Asking questions to audience was a representative type of conversing. And expressing solidarity was divided using 'we' and sharing experience. expressing closeness was also divided insertion of personal cases and joking. On the other hand, Korean learners and international graduate students used simple types of involvement strategies. Based on these results, I have proposed a few teaching ways for involvement strategies.
