Background: Oral frailty is defined as the functional decline of the oral function due to aging, and it is associated with frailty and chronic disease. Most of the frailty intervention is for adults aged 65 years and older. However, early intervention for preventive disorder is most important. The objective of this study was to identify the age at which oral frailty surpass the "normal" range. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 719 adults (aged 30~89 years) residing in Gangwon province in May 2023. Risk of oral frailty was assessed using criteria from The Korean Academy of Geriatric Dentistry including oral function such as swallowing and mastication, and frailty. Frailty was assessed using the Kihon Checklist. To determine when oral frailty surpass the "normal" status, statistical analysis including chi-squared tests and multiple logistic regression analysis were performed using R (ver. 4.3.1). Results: There were 388 (54.0%) individuals who had a "normal" status risk of oral frailty. The risk of oral frailty was higher in the 50~54 age group compared to the 30~34 age group (odds ratio [OR] 0.50, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.28~0.91), after adjusting for gender, education, income, occupation, and frailty (OR 0.46, 95% CI 0.22~0.94). This means that from 50~54 years old, regardless of gender, education, income, occupation, or frailty condition, there is a distinction from the "normal" status. Conclusion: We found that intervention for oral frailty is needed starting from age 50 years. This is the stage where early indications of oral frailty become apparent. Early intervention for oral frailty can lead to a decrease in the prevalence of diseases and medical expenditure. Therefore, early intervention in middle-aged adults of oral frailty is necessary to improve the quality of life related to oral health.
Background: The establishment of a strategy for the reduction and prevention of oral disease, a global pervasive disease, is considered one of the important national health policy strategies. In Korea, the 5th Comprehensive National Health Promotion Plan is currently in progress, but there is insufficient research on the transition process or improvement direction in the field of oral health. Methods: Changes in Comprehensive National Health Promotion Plan's Oral health sector in three countries were compared, and the direction of the three countries (Korea, the United States, and Canada) in accordance with the recent Oral health paradigm was confirmed. In this study, we reviewed the existing literature using the narrative review method to draw implications for strategies and directions for oral health promotion in Korea. Results: In Korea, the oral health promotion strategy is included in the 5th Comprehensive National Health Promotion Plan, and the project is being led by the government. The United States prepared a national-led oral health promotion strategy and suggested multi-disciplinary cooperation to improve overall oral health and reduce the oral health inequality. For more active intervention, Canada established an oral health-related department and assigned experts, while emphasizing cooperation between the government and the private sector. Conclusion: As a result of this study, Korea is also making efforts to improve oral health, but more active government intervention is needed to reduce the inequality in oral health by population group. To this end, it is necessary to establish a strong multi-sectoral cooperation system and prepare a strategy for implementation.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of oral health education feedback using $Qraycam^{TM}$. The middle school students 118 were divided into intervention group (59) and control group (59) subjects evaluated the dental plaque score using $Qraycam^{TM}$ after oral health education at baseline. Then, the $Qraycam^{TM}$ images view only sent to students and parents of the intervention group by text message. After 4 weeks both intervention group and control group were evaluated dental plaque by $Qraycam^{TM}$ re-taking. Then, they filled out the questionnaire. Both ${\Delta}R$ value and SPS(Simple Plaque Score) were statistically significant reduced in groups performed feedback(p<0.001). The oral health behavior, toothbrushing of intervention group was significantly higher compared to the control group(p<0.001). Also the importance of oral health was significantly higher in the intervention group compared to the control group(p<0.001). The effect of dental plaque reducing, toothbrushing time and subjective oral health importance were higher in the intervention group who received feedback using $Qraycam^{TM}$ image. Therefore it was expected to be able to utilize $Qraycam^{TM}$ image as a visual feedback tool of oral health education.

Objective: This study is to design an intervention model for local residents to manage their oral health on their own. By establishing an autonomous participatory network without the intervention of external experts, it is possible to actively practice toothbrushing and use preventive services. Method: This is a case report study, and oral health education was conducted after interviews with 8 members of the Health Plus Village Committee in the N region of Hongcheon-gun and 156 residents of the senior center. Result: To foster oral health guardians in the community and to change behavior by actively sharing information and communicating with residents. It was confirmed that the Health Plus Village Committee was influential in spreading information, means, and interest about toothbrushing practices and preventive dental services to neighbors. Conclusion: In order to implement continuous resident-led oral health projects, resident-led village projects led by the Health Plus Village Committee should be activated through repeated empowerment education.
Objectives : The purpose of the study is to investigate the effect of the oral hygiene care program in stroke patients. Methods : The subjects were 62 stroke patients of rehabilitation department in Youngnam University Hospital in Daegu. The study was carried out from January, 2010 to October, 2010. Intervention group was 35 and the control group was 31 patients. Tooth brushing instruction, oral health education and scaling were implemented in all patients at baseline. This program was conducted 5 times during hospitalization in intervention group. Results : In the intervention group, the mean age was 59.2 years, and women accounted for 66.7% and the control group consisted of 72.4% of women and mean age was 58.5 years. The average of the number of permanent teeth with experience of dental caries, the values of dental calculus index, plaque index, bleeding index and tooth mobility were 11.88, 11.79, 9.91, 3.16 and 1.16, respectively. The control group showed 10.21, 11.79, 9.91, 3.16 and 1.16, respectively. The proportion of subjects whose CPI was higher than 3 accounted for 97%, and the O'Leary index score was 38.6 in the intervention grou. The control group showed 100% and 38.79. Conclusions : Oral condition improved significantly in the intervention group in the third session. These findings may provide essential information for oral health program planning and implementation.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of tooth-brushing oral care on oral health and ventilator-associated pneumonia of patients in Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Methods: A total of 74 participants were recruited from a medical, surgical, or neurosurgical ICU at S Hospital in Seoul, Korea, from September of 2010 to January of 2011. An experimental group (n= 36) received oral care with tooth-brushing while a control group (n=38) received oral care with cotton ball and gauze. In both group, the oral care was done three times a day at least one minute for 7 days. Oral health was examined by the Modified Oral Assessment Guide before the intervention and each night. Results: There is no difference between the groups in aspect of passage of time (p = .603), interaction between time and intervention (p =.300), the performance intervention (p = .766), and the incidence of VAP (p = .486). Conclusion: The effect of oral care with tooth-brushing on oral health and VAP was not different from that of usual oral care in ICU. However, further study is necessary due to high attrition in this study.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of oral gargling with an aromatic solution on xerostomia, objective oral status, and oral health-related quality of life in psychiatric inpatients. Methods: A nonequivalent control group with a non-synchronized design was used in this study. The experimental group (n=34) received oral gargling with an aroma solution, while the control group (n=33) gargled with 0.9% normal saline. Dependent variables were measured at pre-, post-, and follow-up test. Data were analyzed using an χ2-test, Fisher's exact probability test, t-tests, and repeated measures ANOVA using SPSS/WIN v.21.0. Results: After the intervention, significant differences were revealed in xerostomia (F=15.30, p<.001), objective oral status (F=38.44, p<.001), and oral health-related quality of life (F=62.70, p<.001) with an interaction effect between group and time. Conclusion: These findings indicate that gargling with an aroma solution is more effective than 0.9% normal saline for the oral health of psychiatric inpatients. Therefore gargling with an aroma can be safely recommended as a brief, economical, and positive intervention in clinical settings.
