Objectives: This study was to examine the association of sugar-containing snacking habits with dental caries and periodontal diseases. Methods: This study was conducted on 2,807 adults who answered both oral examination and food intake frequency survey in the data of 2015 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The intake frequency of sugary snacks was selected from 17 kind of snacks, which had high sugar content and could affect oral disease. We used the complex sample logistic regression using SPSS 23.0 confirmed the correlation of sugary snack intake frequency and oral diseases. Results: 16.9% of all adults had a sugary snack at least three times a day. 20.7% of dental caries patients and 25.8% of people with periodontal diseases consumed sugary snacks more than three times a day. Especially, periodontal diseases were 1.51 times higher(p=0.008) in three or more consuming snacks group than that who ingested sugary snacks less than six times a week, by correcting the general characteristics and oral health behaviors. Conclusions: Oral health in adults affects oral health in old age, so from a public health perspective, integrated intervention is required to manage the self-cultivation health and to create correct eating habits.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of socioeconomic factors and health behaviors on the prevalence of oral diseases(dental caries and periodontal disease) among Korean adults. Data from the 2005 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was analyzed for adults aged over 19 years (n=25,215). Oral disease was defined as disease diagnosed by a dentist for the previous 12 months. Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were used to conduct statistical analysis. The population without dental caries and periodontal diseases were used as the reference category for all analysis. The overall prevalence of annual dentist-diagnosed dental caries and periodontal diseases were 23.5% and 10.6% respectively. The relative risk of developing dental caries for graduates of middle school and lower were 1.53 times (95% CI: 1.24-1.89) more likely to develop dental caries comparing to college graduates. Low income earners were 1.23 times(95% CI: 1.01-1.49) more likely to develop dental caries than high income earners. Persons covered by national medical insurance were 1.45 times(95% CI: 1.08-1.95) more likely to develop dental caries comparing to persons covered by employee medical insurance. Compared with persons not eating snacks, the risk of developing caries in persons eating snacks once a day was 1.16(95% CI: 1.01-1.32), while those who snacked twice or more a day were 1.19(95% CI: 1.01-1.41). The relative risk of developing periodontal disease was 3.71(95% CI: 2.38-5.80) higher in older individuals than younger. In terms of education level, middle school graduates and lower were 1.54 times more likely to develop periodontal disease than college graduates. Low income earners were 1.47 times more likely to develop periodontal diseases than high income earners. Using data from a large, nationally representative sample of Korean populations, we support the hypothesis that the prevalence of oral diseases is related with socioeconomic factors and health behaviors. More intensive intervention efforts to reduce the prevalence of dental diseases are warranted in Korea.
Purpose: This study investigated the changes in the health-related behaviors of adult women in Korea during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: Data from the eighth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2019-2020) were analyzed. The participants were 4,848 women aged 19 to 64 years in 2019 and 2020. Data analysis using the complex sampling design was performed using SPSS 20.1. Results: Positive changes during the pandemic compared to before the pandemic in Korean adult women were found for improved subjective oral health perceptions (odds ratio [OR], 1.77; p<.001), increased moderate-intensity exercise in work and leisure activities (OR, 1.75; p<.001 and OR; 1.29, p=.004), and a decrease in secondhand smoke exposure at the workplace and in public places (OR, 0.64; p=.004 and OR, 0.60; p<.001). However, the following negative health behavior changes were found: decreased frequency of walking 5 days a week (OR, 0.81; p=.011) and an increase in unhealthy daytime sleep durations (OR, 1.40; p=006). Conclusion: Compared to before the COVID-19 pandemic, Korean adult women perceived their subjective dental health more positively during the COVID-19 pandemic, decreased their exposure to secondhand smoke at work and in public places, decreased walking, and increased sleep duration during the week. Since this study only compared data between 1 year before and after the start of the pandemic, it is necessary to investigate a longer period of time in the future. A future study should attempt to identify the factors related to changes in health behaviors caused by the pandemic.
Primary school is regarded as an important period when many health-related behaviors and life-styles begin to be formed. Acquiring them through school heath education has a strong influence on the health promotion of not only the family but also the community. The objectives of this study were to evaluate current oral health care of elementary schools in Chungnam province and to provide information for further development in elementary school oral health. We performed a questionnaire survey to 280 health teachers and among them, 155 teachers answered. The result of this study were as follows: 1. Sixty five percent of the health teachers had little interest in oral health. Major information sources for teaching oral health were books in 58.1% of the 155 teachers and 83.2% of teachers spent 30 minutes to 1hour per day in oral health care practice for the students. 2. Contents of the oral health education were composed of regular and special curriculums, and an average of education time during a semester was 2.6 hours in 3rd grade, and 1.3 hours in first and second grade. 60.6% of the teachers made the children practice the proper method of tooth brushing during the education time. 3. Major problems in oral health education were insufficient time, lack of equipment and difficulty in teaching method. The educational media were tooth models among 91.0% and OHP among 85.2% of the teachers. The tooth model was usually used in first to fourth grades and OHP in fifth to sixth grades. But 63.9% health teachers need to develop stronger educational methods using multimedia. 4. Meanwhile the most important strategy of oral health in urban schools was health education, that of rural schools was fluoride mouth-rinsing programme. Fluoride mouth-rinsing programmes were performed by 60.0% of the elementary school. Periodic dental examination was performed in all elementary schools. 98.2% of the schools sent the results home through school notification letters, but post-examination management was performed in only 67.1% of them 64.5% of the health teachers do follow-ups on the oral disease of the children after the examination. Only 0.7% of the schools have oral health education plans for the students' parents. Considering these major strategies for elementary school oral health care were health education, practicing proper methods of tooth brushing, periodic dental examinations, and fluoride mouth-rinsing programmes. But health teachers need more time for oral health education, practicing and management, and developing education materials. With regard to the high demand for oral health education and poor follow-up after periodic examination, the oral health education in elementary school should be considered as a formal educational course for more proper management of oral health, including application of major strategies to the children in earlier grades and efforts for increasing recognition and participation of the parents.
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of occlusion patterns using the T-scan $III^{(R)}$ system and oral parafunctional behaviors on temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) in female college students. Methods: A questionnaire survey assessed TMD symptoms and oral behavioral checklist (OBC) scores in 120 female college students in their early twenties. Occlusion was evaluated using the T-scan $III^{(R)}$ system. Logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between occlusion and OBC scores based on patients' symptoms of TMD and to determine whether OBC scores were a predictor of TMD. Results: A total of 101 participants with an average age of 22 (${\pm}2.17$) years were included in the analysis. The reported symptoms of TMD were categorized as moderate (28.8%), slight (27.7%), severe (25.7%), and asymptomatic (17.8%). Occlusion was analyzed using the T-scan $III^{(R)}$ system, and the mean occlusion time was 0.42(${\pm}0.5$) seconds. The results of logistic regression analysis showed that the group that would 'clench or grind teeth' during sleep showed an odds ratio for TMD that was 8.9 times higher than that in the group without this behavior. The group that would 'hold, tighten, or tense muscles without clenching' while awake showed an odds ratio for TMD that was 21.3 times higher than that in the group without this behavior. Conclusions: We confirmed that oral parafunctional behavior affects TMD. Therefore, we would like to continue studying the diagnosis and treatment of TMD by evaluating occlusion patterns and related OBC scores.
This study aims to measure oral health knowledge and practice level among dental clinic patients, and examine their relationships with decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMF) index and the oral health-related quality of life (QOL). Empirical data have been collected from 311 patients through structured questionnaires and dental examinations conducted in Busan area. According to the analysis of causal relationship, oral health knowledge turned out to have a direct effect on oral health practices, which exerted both direct and indirect effects on DMF index and oral health-related QOL. While DMF index directly affected the oral health-related QOL, oral health knowledge proved to have only an indirect effect on DMF index and oral health-related QOL, mediated by oral health practices. Considering all these findings, effective oral health education and other intervention programs should focus on motivating people to participate in the active practices of desirable oral health behaviors, which will lead to the prevention of oral diseases and the subsequent improvement in the QOL.
1. Recognition of subjects on oral health education, About the question if they know oral health education, those who said yes were 241(70.7%) and those who said no were 100(29.3%). And, about the question how they get to know oral health education, 161(47.2%) told they knew it by a kindergarten or a nursery, 115(33.7%) told by neighbors, 30(8.8%) told by a public health center, 28(8.2%) told by a dental clinic and 7(2.1%) told that they learned it by other methods. 2. The perception of subjects on oral health education, About the question if they executed oral health education in a kindergarten or a nursery, 254(74.5%) said yes and 87(25.5%) said no. And, about the question if they have ever executed oral health education out of a kindergarten or a nursery, 70(20.5%) said yes and 271(79.5%) said no. 3. Subjects' oral health behaviors and attitudes toward children, About the question if they have ever visited a dental office, 249(73.0%) said yes and 92(27.0%) said no. And, about the question if they watch their children's toothbrushing, 321(94.1%) said yes and 20(5.9%) said no. About the question if they examine if their children have decayed teeth, 213(62.5%) said yes and 128(37.5%) said no. And, about the question if they are interested in their children's oral health, 244(71.6%) said yes and 97(28.4%) said no. 4. It appeared that unemployed mothers executed oral health education to their children more compared with employed mothers(p < .01). 5. Execution of oral health education according to the recognition of oral health education and previous experiences of subjects, The execution of oral health education according to the recognition of oral health education was statistically significant(p < .001). 6. Execution of oral health education according to the subjects' oral health behaviors and attitudes toward children. The execution of oral health education according to the experience of visiting a dental office, watching children's toothbrushing and watching children's teeth was statistically significant(p < .01, p < .001).
The purpose of this study was to examine the Influence of the experience of Childcare Teacher about oral health education on oral health behaviors. For this, Questionnairs to be self-filled up about experience of oral health education were carried out to 267 childcare teachers who are working in nurseries in Geongnam province. The date was analysed using the SPSS 12.0 program. The obtained result were as follows. Among the respondents who are not under stress of oral health. 8.1% respondents had the oral health education and 7.7% others didn't have it. For toothbrushing methods, it was found that 25.3% used manual toothbrushing with experience in dental education(up and down toothbrushing monement) and 35.4% used semi automatic toothbrushing(rotational movement). 37.1% respondents had experiences in oral health education, 69.7% respondents were instructed in the oral health at public health center, and 61.6% respondents were instructed in the oral health a theory(toothbrushing guidance). Among the respondents who answered that oral health education should be necessary, 83.4% of those have already had oral health education where as 73.8% respondents have not had the education. 67.7% of the respondents who want to participate in the oral health education is corresponding to those with experience in dental education, 66.1% respondents with no education feel the necessity of the oral health education.
The purpose of this study was to examine the association between oral health status and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The study used a nationally representative sample of Koreans (2013 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) aged 19 years over (n=6,113). Dependent variable was RA, which was assessed with oral health status. Independent variable was oral health status (periodontal status, missing tooth). The chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were performed to identify the association between oral health status and RA. Results of logistic regression analysis for association between periodontal status and RA was no significant. Results of logistic regression analysis for association between missing tooth and RA was statistically significant. The odds ratio (OR) for RA participants was 3.03 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.47~6.23) in missing tooth 19~28 than missing tooth 0~8. The OR for RA participants was 2.08 (95% CI, 1.06~4.08) in missing tooth 9~18 than missing tooth 0~8. After adjustment for confounders (socio-demographic factors, health behaviors), results of logistic regression analysis was no significant. More missing tooth among adults was greater the risk of RA. By promoting the improvement of oral hygiene and oral health would contribute to reduce the risks associated with systemic diseases. Future study is needed to examine the detailed causal relations between oral health status and RA bidirectionally.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between oral health behaviors and periodontal diseases in adult obese people. Using the original data of the second phase of the 6th National Health and Nutrition Survey, the final 4381 adults were extracted. We analyzed frequency and technical statistics and chi - square test and multiple logistic regression analysis using SPSS statistical program to confirm the association between body mass index, number of brushing, drinking, smoking and oral health status and behavior. As a result, the prevalence of periodontal disease decreased as the number of toothbrushing increased, and the prevalence of periodontal disease increased as the body mass index increased. Through this study, obesity, a global health issue, should be more concerned with oral care and develop oral health management programs.
