  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of malocclusion or orthodontic treatment on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in adults. Methods: The sample consisted of 860 adults (378 men and 482 women, aged 18-39 years) who were clinically evaluated for malocclusion or orthodontic treatment experience. Participants were divided into 4 groups as follows: normal occlusion, malocclusion, fixed treatment, and retention. OHRQoL was assessed with the short form of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ). Results: The malocclusion group and the fixed treatment group had significantly higher OHIP-14 scores than the normal occlusion group and the retention group (p < 0.001). The malocclusion group had the highest PIDAQ score, while the normal occlusion group and the retention group had the lowest PIDAQ score (p < 0.001). Women had higher OHIP-14 and PIDAQ scores than men. A significant positive correlation was found between OHIP-14 and PIDAQ scores (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Malocclusion has a negative impact on OHRQoL, but this could be improved in adults through orthodontic treatment. These OHRQoL questionnaires can provide additional useful information on specific aspects of orthodontic patients' psychological state.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the symptom of dry mouth of workers, their subjective oral symptoms and factors affecting their oral health-related quality of life (Oral Health Impact Profile, OHIP-14) in an effort to provide information on the development of oral health promotion programs geared toward workers. The subjects in this study were the workers in five different companies in North Jeolla Province. After a survey was conducted from August 1 to September 20, 2012, the collected data were analyzed. The findings of the study were as follows: The office workers got 2.59 in oral dryness, and the sales associates got 1.82. The oral dryness of the former was severer than that of the latter (p<0.001). The irregular workers got 2.05 in OHIP-14, and the regular workers got 1.82 (p<0.001). Symptom of dry mouth had a positive correlation to OHIP-14 (r=0.456). OHIP-14 was positively correlated with age (r=0.209) and negatively with academic credential (r=-0.136). OHIP-14 was more significantly affected when their symptom of dry mouth was severer (${\beta}=0.383$, p<0.001), when they were older (${\beta}=0.221$, p<0.001) and when they felt they had oral diseases (${\beta}=0.146$, p<0.01). In conclusion, quality programs should be developed to promote the oral health of industrial workers in consideration of the influential factors for the oral health-related quality of life of the workers, and the government should pay more attention to related policy setting to improve the oral health of industrial workers.

  • Purpose. The purpose of this pilot study is to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Korean version of the oral health impact profile (OHIP-EDENT K) for edentulous patients. Materials and methods. The study was conducted on 12 patients who fabricated overdenture in the Department of Prosthodontics, Korea University, Guro Hospital. All subjects completed the Korean version of Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP K) questionnaire. Shorten version of the OHIP called OHIP-14 K and OHIP-EDENT K were derived from the datasets. Cronbach's alpha was used to measure internal consistency of the summary scores for OHIP-EDENT K. The Spearman's correlation coefficient between the summary scores for OHIP-EDENT K and OHIP K was calculated to evaluate concurrent validity. Results. The reliability of the summary scores for OHIP-EDENT K was acceptable (α=.736). The Spearman's correlation coefficient of the summary scores for OHIP-EDENT K and OHIP K was 0.966, which was statistically significant (P<.001). OHIP-EDENT K exhibited less susceptibility to floor effects than OHIP-14 K and appeared to measure change as effectively as OHIP K. In order to prove the reliability, responsiveness and validity of OHIP-EDENT K, further studies with more samples are needed. Conclusion. The OHIP-EDENT K, a questionnaire on oral health-related QOL comprising 19 items, has measurement properties comparable with the full 49-item version. This modified shortened version can be an alternative questionnaire to full version of OHIP K and OHIP-14 K in edentulous patients.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between oral health status and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) by using the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) among adolescents in a metropolis of Korea. A total of 119 students in 1st grade in middle school and 1st grade in high school participated in this cross-sectional study. Oral examination was conducted by two trained dentists to collect in for mation about Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) and Community Periodontal Index (CPI). OHRQoL was evaluated by short-form of OHIP-14. Wilcoxon correlation, Kruskal-Wallis test and multiple regression analyses were performed to assess the association between oral health status and OHRQoL. All data was analyzed by SPSS 22.0 and the significance level was set at 0.05. The average of OHIP-14 score in adolescents having no dental caries ($17.88{\pm}5.13$) was higher than those having more than one DMFT index ($19.75{\pm}7.16$). The average of OHIP-14 score in adolescents having bleeding observed ($20.21{\pm}8.01$) was higher than those having more than calculus detected ($18.66{\pm}5.65$). The level of OHRQoL was higher in the participants perceiving better oral health condition compared to those perceiving poorer condition (p<0.05). The result of this study could provide the information that OHRQoL from adolescents positively associated with self-assessed oral health status than oral health with DMFT and CPI. Further studies are needed to well-designed follow-up studies.
