Predictive Modeling of Dental Pain Factors Using Neural Network Model (신경망 모델을 이용한 치통발생 예측 모형에 관한 연구)

  • Oral diseases may hinder people from living a healthy life by causing obstacles in the nutrition supply of the human body. This study aims at the found out the eating habits and recognition factors of people who are currently suffering from denial pain, and made a predictive modeling using neural network, which is a data mining. The oral health condition for maintaining and improving oral health has been examined and analyzed through a survey and the groups were divided based on the presence and the absence of dental pain. This study observed on eating habits, exercise and oral habits. The study results of neural network modeling input parameter was selected significant survival factors. As a result of making a predictive modeling using the neural network, the fitness of the predictive modeling of dental pain factors was 88.7%. As for the people who are likely to experience dental pain predicted by the neural network model, preventive measures including proper eating habits, education on oral hygiene, and stress release must precede any dental treatment.

Oral health and eating habits characteristics relating to maxillary central incisor color of the university students in their twenties (20대 대학생들의 상악중절치 색조와 구강보건 및 식습관 관련 특성)

  • Objectives : This study aims to prepare the basic data of the teeth color by measuring tooth mode using the color of the maxillary central incisor of the college students in their twenties as the dental colorimeter, and oral health and eating habit characteristics were examined. Methods : The maxillary central incisor(1 teeth) of the subjects of study as 467 students(male 89, female 378) was measured during the period from November 14, December 2 2011, so the color of total 467 teeth were examined, and oral health and eating habit characteristics were researched. Results : 1. As the results of measurement of the shade, value, hue of maxillary central incisor by the general characteristics of the subject, the major(shipbuilding information, special rehabilitation for young children) was higher at 3.3 of the shade, and the grade(1), age($$\geq_-20$$), major(beauty culture & cosmetic, occupational therapy) showed higher at +2 of the value, and the grade(1) and all major showed higher at R3 of the hue. 2. As the results of measurement of the shade, value, hue of maxillary central incisor by the oral health characteristics, the subjective teeth color(yellow) and the education of oral health(no) showed higher at 2.5 of the shade. 3. As the results of measurement of the shade, value, hue of maxillary central incisor by the eating habit characteristics of the subjects, the chocolate showed higher at 3.0 and 2.0 of the shade, and the red pepper paste showed higher at +2 and STD of the value, and the green tea showed higher at $R_3$ of the hue. Conclusions : This study demonstrates that the color of the maxillary central incisor showed differences various tendency according to the oral health and eating habit characteristics.

Risk factors for orthodontic fixed retention failure: A retrospective controlled study

  • Objective: To investigate the potential correlation between fixed orthodontic retention failure and several patient- and treatment-related factors. Methods: Patients finishing treatment with fixed appliances between 2016 and 2017 were retrospectively included in this study. Those not showing fixed retention failure were considered as control group. Patients with fixed retention failure were considered as the experimental group. Additionally, patients with failure of fixed retainers in the period of June 2019 to March 2021 were prospectively identified and included in the experimental group. The location of the first retention failure, sex, pretreatment dental occlusion, facial characteristics, posttreatment dental occlusion, treatment approach and presence of oral habits were compared between groups before and after treatment separately by using a Fisher exact test and a Mann-Whitney U test. Results: 206 patients with fixed retention failure were included, 169 in the mandibular and 74 in the maxillary jaws. Significant correlations were observed between retention failure in the mandibular jaws and mandibular arch length discrepancy (P = 0.010), post-treatment growth pattern (P = 0.041), nail biting (P < 0.001) and abnormal tongue function (P = 0.002). Retention failure in the maxillary jaws was more frequent in patients with IPR in the mandibular jaws (P = 0.005) and abnormal tongue function (P = 0.021). Conclusions: This study suggests a correlation between fixed retention failure and parafunctional habits, such as nail biting and abnormal tongue function. Prospective studies with larger study populations could further confirm these results.

A study on oral health awareness-recognition factors and oral health promotion activities of social workers engaged in child care facilities (아동양육시설에 종사하는 생활지도원의 구강건강인지 및 지각요인과 구강건강증진행위에 대한 조사)

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to examine the level of oral health knowledge, oral health importance, oral health status and oral health interest of the social workers engaged in child care facilities to analyze the influential factors on oral health promotion activities and provide the basic data for oral health promotion activities. Methods : The subjects in this study were those social workers engaged in child care facilities from May 15th to May 25th in 2011. The self-report questionnaires were distributed and withdrawn and then a total of 205 papers from the subjects that participated in this study were analyzed for the final analysis. Results : 1. Oral health knowledge had $12.16{\pm}1.66$ in a full score of 15 and oral health importance, oral health status and oral health interest were $1.12{\pm}0.36$, $2.80{\pm}0.50$ and $2.14{\pm}0.8$ respectively in a full score of 5. 2. According to the general characteristics, the difference analysis of cognition-recognition factors showed that singles had significantly higher oral health knowledge married couples (p<0.05) and the social workers unusing auxiliary oral hygiene devices had significantly higher oral health interest than those using them(p<0.01). 3. The mean of oral health promotion was $3.28{\pm}0.51$, characteristics of detailed specific-area were as follows ; the toothbrushing was $3.77{\pm}0.57$, the use of fluoride was $2.67{\pm}0.98$, periodic dental screening and treatment were $2.98{\pm}1.09$ and eating habits was $4.14{\pm}0.57$. These results generally showed tooth-brushing and eating habits show a little higher figures. 4. Considering the factors oral health promotion behaviors of social workers engaged in child care facilities, the higher oral health interest was, the higher oral health promotion behavior was. Conclusions : It seems that social workers engaged in child care facilities are required to pay attention to the importance of oral health and learn oral health knowledge, which will lead to much better improvement of oral health for children brought up by them.

  • Recent advancement in molocular biology enhanced further understanding of the carcinogenesis of oral cancer and its relation with various genetic backgrounds. Familial risk factors includes similar habits of the family and polymorphic variations of the genes. Recently, human papilloma virus has been suggested to be linked with oral cancer progression. Enhancement of understanding of the damage or alteration in molecular pathway in various cellular response of oral cancer progression would lead the targeted therapy or precise early diagnosis of the oral cancer.

  • Macroglossia is a tongue pathology of multiple etiology as systemic disease like cerebral palsy and Down syndrome etc. It can cause abnormal oral conditions including anterior open bite or dyspnea by changing occlusion and oral habits. So many handicapped children who have macroglossia need to get surgery of large tongue to improve esthetics, function, and treatment stability. The purpose of this report is to evaluate 2 patients, one has cerebral palsy and the other lymphangioma, who have experience of glossectomy with review of literature.

Prevalence of Oral Pre-malignant Lesions and its Risk Factors in an Indian Subcontinent Low Income Migrant Group in Qatar

  • Background: The expatriate population in Qatar largely comprises workers from the Indian subcontinent which has a very high rate of oral malignancy. Social and cultural habits and as well premalignant risk factors in this population remain prevalent even after migration. Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study assessed the prevalence of risk factors and occurrence of oral precancerous lesions in a low income group expatriate community from the Indian subcontinent residing in Qatar. Results: Among the 3,946 participants screened for oral premalignant lesions 24.3% (958) were smokers and 4.3 % (169) were pan chewers while 6.3% (248) were users of both smoked and smokeless forms of tobacco. Significantly higher proportion of industrial laborers (49.9%) followed by drivers (24.1%) were found to be smokers (p=0.001). The prevalence of white lesions was higher in smokers versus non-smokers 3.5% versus 2.3% (p=0.111), however this difference was statistically non-significant. Red and white lesions were highly significant (i.e. 1.2 % and 10.9% respectively) in the subjects with pan chewing and smoking habits (p=0.001). A significant proportion (8.9%) of the subjects with pan chewing habit showed evidence of oral precancerous lesions (p=0.001). Conclusions: Even though smoking and pan chewing were two significant risk factors detected in this population, their prevalence and occurrence of premalignant lesions are low as compared to the studies conducted in their home countries.

A study on eating habits of the elderly to senior citizens' centers in section area (일부지역 노인정 노인들의 식습관 실태에 관한 연구)

  • Objectives : This study carried out the agreement of old people who visited senior citizens' centers in section area from January 5to 15, 2010. This study aimed to arrange basic data for the development in oral health and for the elderly oral health program, by surveying on regular level and food habit in the eating habits of the elderly. Methods : The regular level of dietary life, meal volume, meal time, kinds of meal preference, the appearance of snack intake, and kinds in snack preference were analyzed by using the statistical processing SPSS WIN 18 targeting totally 140 subjects, by preparing 1:1 questionnaire through direct interview. Results : The regular level of dietary life in the elderly was surveyed to be regular in 76.4% of the whole and to be irregular in 23.6%. As for the daily meal volume of the elderly, it was indicated to be 36.4% for 'eating proper volume' and to be 51.4% for 'eating a little.' As for the meal time of the elderly, it was indicated to be 52.1% for under 10 minutes and to be 25% for having a meal for 16~20 minutes. In the results of having surveyed on kinds of meal preference in the elderly, it was indicated to be 57.7% for having a meal 'centering on vegetables.' In the survey on snack intake of the elderly, it was indicated to be 62.1% for 'enjoying eating snack.' As for snack kinds of being preferred, 69.3% of the elderly were indicated to be the highest in 'fruits.' Conclusions : The elderly meals on a regular basis as needed by vegetarian diet, however showed thar eating a very short time. I consider it is necessary that study on connection between old people meal time, eating habits and oral physical condition.

An Epidemiology Study on Temporo-mandibular Disorders of Employees Residing at Seoul (서울에 거주하는 직장인의 측두하악장애에 대한 역학적 연구)

  • This study tried to find the prevalence and distribution of temporo-mandibulr disorders(TMD) for workers (employee) in Seoul area to investigate the correlation between TMD and possible etiological factors such as general muscle and joint symptoms, headache, unilateral chewing and parafunction. This study was an epidemiological investigation of answers obtained from 282 persons by questionaire from Aug. 1995 to Nov. 1995. The major findings from the questionaire were as follows. (1) 43.26% of the subjects(282 persons) has TMD. (41.88% of man and 43.26% of women) (2) The more often people have general muscle and joint symptoms and headache, the more susceptible they are to TMD. Their correlation was very significant(p<0.001). (3) The more people have bad oral habits such as bruxism, clenching and biting habit, the more likely they have TMD. The more sensitive people are to stress, the more frequently they have bad oral habits such as bruxism, clenching and biting habit. (4) Unilateral chewing has higher TMD index than bilateral chewing. There is no relationship between ache areas and TMD index.

Investigation of the Effects of Teeth Clenching Due to Weight Training on Oral Health

  • Background: As interest in health increases, the number of people engaging in weight training to enhance muscle strength and muscle mass is on the rise. High-intensity weight training has been reported to induce tooth clenching habits, leading to tooth damage and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) abnormalities. Consequently, it is essential to investigate the impact of weight training accompanied by tooth clenching on oral health and to develop guidelines based on these findings. Methods: The study included male participants aged 25 years and older, comprising 15 non-exercisers and 15 professional fitness trainers who have been engaged in weight training for over 5 years. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire to gather information on age, exercise experience, total weight lifted in three major weight training exercises (deadlift, bench press, and squat), and teeth clenching habits. Additionally, examinations for tooth cracks and fractures, TMJ noise and pain, maximum mouth opening, occlusal force, and occlusal contact area were conducted. Results: Compared to non-exercisers, professional fitness trainers who have been engaged in weight training for over 5 years exhibited a higher prevalence of teeth clenching habits. While there were no significant differences between the two groups in occlusal contact area and the extent of tooth fractures, there were significant differences in occlusal force and the degree of tooth cracks. Furthermore, unlike joint noise and TMJ pain, the maximum mouth opening was significantly reduced in professional fitness trainers compared to non-exercisers. Conclusion: Our study suggests that the continuation of high-intensity exercise, which induces teeth clenching habits, may cause tooth damage and TMJ disorders.
