Simulations of the Performance Factors on Vacuum System

  • In this work, the effects of fairly influential factors on performance of vacuum system, such as constant pressure and outgassing effect were simulated to propose the optimum design factors. Outgassing effects of selected vacuum materials on the vacuum characteristics were simulated by the $VacSim^{Multi}$ simulation tool. This investigation examined the feasibility of reliably simulating the outgassing characteristics of common vacuum chamber materials (aluminum, copper, stainless steel, nickel plated steel, Viton A). The optimum design factors for vacuum systems were suggested based on the simulation results. And, the effects of throttle valve applications on vacuum characteristics were also simulated to obtain the optimum design model of variable conductance on high vacuum system. Simulated vacuum characteristics of the proposed modelling were agreed with the observed experimental behaviour of real systems. Pressure limit valve and normally on-off control valve were schematized as the modelling of throttle valve for the constant process-pressure. Simulation results were plotted as pump-down curve of chamber and variable conductance of throttle valve. Simulated behaviors showed the applications of throttle valve sustained the process-pressure constantly, stably, and reliably.

Optimum Design of an SAR Satellite Constellation Considering the Revisit Time Using a Genetic Algorithm

  • The optimum design of an SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellite constellation is developed herein using a genetic algorithm. The performance of Earth observations using a satellite constellation can be improved by minimizing the maximum revisit time. Classical orbit design using analytic methods has limitations when addressing orbit dynamics due to various disturbances. To overcome this issue, an optimization technique based on a genetic algorithm is used. STK (Systems Tool Kit) is utilized to propagate the satellite orbit when considering external disturbances, and the maximum revisit time on the earth observation area is calculated. By minimizing the performance index using a genetic algorithm, the optimum orbit of the satellite constellation is designed. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents relationship between the dynamic behavior of an asynchronous linear pipeline (ALP) and the performance of the ALP as buffers are allocated. Then the relationship is used in order to characterize a local optimum situation on the buffer design space of the ALP. Using the characterization we propose an efficient algorithm optimizing buffer allocation on an ALP in order to achieve its average case performance. Without the loss of optimality, our algorithm works in linear time complexity so it achieves fast buffer-configuration optimization. This paper makes two contributions. First, it describes relationship between the performance characteristics of an ALP and a local optimum on the buffer design space of the ALP. Second, it devises a buffer allocation algorithm finding an optimum solution in linear time complexity.

  • The outlet temperature of gas cooler has a great effect on the efficiency of carbon dioxide heat pump system. In order to obtain a small approach temperature difference at gas cooler, near-counter flow type heat exchanger has been proposed, and larger heat transfer area is demanded. The optimum design of gas cooler involving the analysis of trade-offs between heat transfer performance and cost is desirable. In this study, the effects of geometric parameters, such as the circuit arrangement, tube diameter, transverse tube spacing, longitudinal tube spacing and the number of tube rows and fin spacing on the performance of heat transfer were investigated using the developed model. This study suggested various simulation results for optimum designs of gas cooler.

통계적 방법에 의한 교면포장용 고성능 콘크리트의 최적배합비 도출 (Optimum Mix Design of High-Performance Concrete for Bridge Deck Overlay by Statistical Method)

  • 본 연구는 혼화재료(실리카퓸, 플라이애쉬, 고로슬래그)를 사용하여 교면 포장에 적용할 고성능 콘크리트의 최적배합비를 도출하기 위하여 실시되었다. 최적배합비를 도출하기 위하여 실리카퓸, 플라이애쉬, 고로슬래그의 세가지 혼화재료를 고려하여 통계학의 최적화 기법인 Box Behnken 설계 방법을 사용하였다. 압축강도와 염소이온투과저항성 시험을 실시하였으며 시험 결과를 기초로 최적의 배합비를 도출하였다. 도출된 최적배합은 기술적으로 분석하였으며 시험 결과는 교면포장을 위한 고성능 콘크리트 성능 기준과 비교하였다. 최적배합은 만족할 만한 성능을 보여주었다. 또한 최적배합으로 도출된 고성능 교면포장 콘크리트는 재료의 가격뿐만 아니라 모빌믹서를 사용하지 않고 일반 믹서를 사용하기 때문에 시공비용도 감소시킬 수 있다.

An efficient method for reliable optimum design of trusses

  • This paper introduces a new and effective design amplification factor-based approach for reliable optimum design of trusses. This paper may be categorized as in the family of decoupled methods that aiming for a reliable optimum design based on a Design Amplification Factor (DAF). To reduce the computational expenses of reliability analysis, an improved version of Response Surface Method (RSM) was used. Having applied this approach to two planar and one spatial truss problems, it exhibited a satisfactory performance.

  • 본 논문에서는 생애주기비용뿐만 아니라 생애주기성능 조건을 함께 고려하여 열화되는 교량의 최적 유지관리 전략 수립을 위한 보다 실제적이고 현실적인 방법을 제안하였다. 교량의 성능 및 비용과 관련된 다중목적 조합 최적화 문제인 교량 유지관리 시나리오 집합의 생성을 위해 유전자 알고리즘을 적용하였으며, 다중목적함수에 대한 최적의 균형 잡힌 유지관리 시나리오의 선정이 가능한 기법을 제안하였다. 최적 유지관리 시나리오는 부재수준뿐만 아니라 교량 시스템 수준에서도 생성 가능하도록 하였다. 실제 공용중인 교량에 적용하여 제안된 방법의 실 적용성을 검증하고 분석하였다. 제안된 방법은 기존의 유지관리방법의 한계를 극복하고, 실질적인 예방유지관리체계의 도입을 위한 교량 유지관리 의사결정에 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

속경성 바인더 유형에 따른 긴급보수용 스프레이 패칭 상온 재활용 아스팔트 혼합물(RAP)의 성능 평가 (Performance Evaluation of 100 % RAP Asphalt Mixtures using different types of Rapid-Setting Polymer-Modified Asphalt Emulsion for Spray Injection Application)

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum mix design of the content of 100 % reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) for spray injection application with different binder types. METHODS : Literature review revealed that spray injection method is the one of the efficient and economical methods for repairing a small defective area on an asphalt pavement. The Rapid-Setting Polymer modified asphalt mixtures using two types of rapid setting polymers-asphalt emulsion and a quick setting polymer asphalt emulsion-were subjected to the following tests to determine optimum mix designs and for performance comparison: 1) Marshall stability test, 2) Retained stability test, 3) Wet track abrasion test, and 4) Dynamic stability test. RESULTS and CONCLUSIONS : Type A, B, and C emulsions were tested with different mix designs using RAP aggregates, to compare the performances and determine the optimum mix design. Performance of mixtures with Type A emulsion exceeded that of mixtures with Type B and C emulsion in all aspects. In particular, Type A binder demonstrated the highest performance for WTAT at low temperature. It demonstrated the practicality of using Type A mixture during the cold season. Furthers studies are to be performed to verify the optimum mix design for machine application. Differences in optimum mix designs for machine application and lab application will be corrected through field tests.

  • PURPOSES: The objective of this study was to determine the optimum ratio of mix design, for a reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) content of 100%, for spray injection application. METHODS: A literature review revealed that spray injection is an efficient and cost-effective application for fixing small defective regions of an asphalt pavement. Rapid-setting polymer-modified asphalt mixtures prepared from two types of rapid-setting polymer asphalt emulsion were subjected to Marshall stability and wet track abrasion tests, in order to identify the optimum mix designs. RESULTS and CONCLUSIONS : Different mix designs of type A and type B emulsions were prepared using RAP and virgin aggregates, in order to compare the performance and determine the optimum mix design. The performance of mixtures prepared with RAP was superior to that of mixtures containing virgin aggregates. Moreover, for optimum ratio of the design, the binder content prepared from RAP was set to 1~2% lower than that consisting of virgin aggregates. Compared to their Type A counterparts, type B mixtures consisting of a reactive emulsion performed better in the Marshall stability and wet track abrasion tests. The initial results confirmed the advantages associated with using RAP for spray injection applications. Further studies will be performed to verify the difference in the optimum mix design and performance obtained in the lab-scale test and tests conducted at the job site by using the spray injection machine.

  • 본 연구에서는 생애주기비용을 고려한 성능기반 최적 유지관리 전략 수립 시스템을 개발하였다. 교량 수명동안 비용과 성능이라는 상반되는 목적을 균형있게 만족시킬 수 있는 유지관리 시나리오의 생성을 다중목적 조합최적화 문제로 정식화하고 유전자알고리즘을 적용하였다. 개발된 프로그램을 이용하여 국도 상 강거더 교량의 최적 유지관리 시나리오를 제공하는 과정을 제시하였다. 개발된 시스템은 현재의 교량 유지관리 전략 수립의 방법을 개선하여 교량 관리주체에게 다양한 제약 및 요구조건에 부합하는 최적의 교량 유지관리 시나리오를 제공할 수 있는 효율적인 도구로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.
