A 3 valve-type pulse tube refrigerator optains its cooling effect from pressure drop by releasing the part of the charged gas through hot end nozzle. The objective of this study is to analyze the performance and to find an optimal expansion pressure of the 3 valve-type pulse tube refrigerator. It is assumed that gas lumps are not mixed and periodically repeat the adiabatic compression and expansion processes. And the nodal model is applied for the analysis of the regenerator. As the result of analysis, the optimum pressure at the end of expansion process was about 80-90% of the maximum pressure.
The freeze drying rate was investigated under various conditions such as pressure and moisture contents in order to establish the optimum condition for expansion of the culled flue cured tobacco lamina. The optimal pressure in the chamber to maintain the heat and mass transfer was about 0.8torr, When the moisture contents of sample was 50-60%, expanding rate was the optimum condition and the rate was 67-76%. As the thickness of the sample layers was increased, drying-rate was decreased conversely and this result seemed to be due to decline of heat and mass transfer coefficients. Differences with the position of its stalk were also observed in drying rate, and low stalk position leaves of 5 and 3 was the fastest. Key words : freeze drying, Popping, expansion tobacco.
This study deals with interface charactristics of tube and tubesheet of the nuclear steam generator by the explosive expansion in order to take advantage of optimum expansion ratio, pull-out strength and leakage tightness and improvement of the resisitance on the stress corrosion cracking for low residual stress. The paper also show the relationship between roll, hydraulic and explosive expansion. The results obtain are as follows (1) Because of the explosive bonding is to use the high speed pressure and energy by the explosive, workability is good, bonding region is homogenous (2) Expansion ratio is 2.7%, Pull-out strength 850kg, Leakage strength $500kg/cm^2$. Clearance gap is 10~30mm in case of explosive expansion and interface structure of the tube and tubesheet is optimum condition. (3) As the transition region of the explosive expansion is inactive, the resistance of the stress corrosion cracking is increases 30~40% compare to the roll and hydraulic expansion.
A mathematical model was established for estimating changes in pressure and volume of permeable kimchi packages. The model comprises the CO2 gas production from kimchi and permeation of O2, CO2 and N2 through the permeable film or sheet. Using the developed model, the effects of various packaging variables on the pressure and volume changes were analyzed for rigid and flexible packag es of kimchi(3% salt content) at 15oC, and then effect of storage temperature was also looked into. In case of rigid pack of 400g, using the plastic sheet of high CO2 permeability and initial vacuumizing can help to relieve the problem of pressure build up. The lower fill weight can further reduce the pressure, but will result in higher packaging cost. For the flexible package of 3 kg, highly permeable films such as low density polyethylene(LDPE) and polypropylene can reduce the volume expansion. Higher ratio of CO2 permeability to O2 and N2 permeabilities are effective in reducing the volume expansion. Increased surface area cannot contribute to reduction of volume expansion for highly permeable flexible packages of kimchi. For the impermeable packages, pressure and volume at over ripening stage (acidity 1.0%) increase with decreased temperature, while those at optimum ripening stage(acidity 0.6%) change little with temperature. Pressure of permeable rigid LDPE package increases with tem perature at any ripening stage, and temperature affects the volume of flexible LDPE package very slightly. Experimental verification of the present results and package design with economical consid eration are needed as a next step for practical application.
An axisymmetric supersonic jet is simulated at a Mach number of 1.5 and a Reynolds number of $10^5$ to identify the mechanism of sound radiation from the jet. The present simulation is performed based on the high-order accuracy and high-resolution ENO(Essentially Non-Oscillatory) schemes to capture the time-dependent flow structure representing the sound source. In this simulation, optimum expansion jet is selected as a target, where the pressure at nozzle exit is equal to that of the ambient pressure, to see pure shear layer growth without effect of change in jet cross section due to expansion or shock wave generated at nozzle exit. Shock waves are generated near vortex rings, and discernible pressure waves called Mach wave are radiated in the downstream direction with an angle from the jet axis, which is characteristic of high speed jet noise. Furthermore, vortex roll-up phenomena are observed through the visualization of vorticity contours.
Starting characteristics of the axi-symmetric supersonic exhaust diffuser(SED) with a second throat are numerically investigated. Main purpose of this study is to predict theoretical starting pressure of STED using 1-D normal shock theory and to present the range of optimum starting pressure through parametric study with essential design parameters of STED influencing on starting performance. Renolds-Average Navier-Stokes equations with a standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model incorporated with standard wall function are solved to simulate the diffusing evolutions of the nozzle plume. Minimum(optimum) starting pressure difference of $20{\sim}25%$ between 1-D theory and experimental evidences validated from previous results[5] is also applied to predict those in this system. The analysis results indicate that dominant parameters for diffuser starting in this system is diffuser expansion ratio($A_d/A_t$), which has optimum value 120 and second throat area ratio($A_d/A_{st}$), which has optimum range $3.3{\sim}3.5$.
The Advanced Power Reactor 1400 (APR1400) Steam Generator (SG) uses alloy 690 as a tube material and SA-508 Grade 3 Class 1 as a tubesheet material to form tube-to-tubesheet joint through hydraulic expansion process. In this paper, the residual stresses in the SG tube-to-tubesheet contact area was investigated by applying Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) methodology and the V-model. The use of MBSE transform system description into diagrams which clearly describe the logical interaction between functions hence minimizes the risk of ambiguity. A theoretical and Finite Element Methodology (FEM) was used to assess and compare the residual stresses in the tube-to-tubesheet contact area. Additionally, the axial strength of the tube to tubesheet joint based on the pull-out force against the contact joint force was evaluated and recommended optimum autofrettage pressure to minimize residual stresses in the transition zone given. A single U-tube hole and tubesheet with ligament thickness was taken as a single cylinder and plane strain condition was assumed. An iterative method was used in FEM simulation to find the limit autofrettage pressure at which pull-out force and contact force are of the same magnitude. The joint contact force was estimated to be 20 times more than the pull-out force and the limit autofrettage pressure was estimated to be 141.85MPa.
A cycle analysis was performed for 2-stage expansion Claude refrigerators by a numerical method. The refrigerators are under recent development such that the reciprocating expanders of Collins cycle are replaced by new turboexpanders. A computer simulation program was written to predict the coefficient of performance of the refrigerators for several input parameters. It was found out that there exist unique optimum values for the ratio of expanded mass through the turboexpanders to the total mass and for the intermediate pressure of the 2-stage expansion. The maximum coefficient of performance was about $5{\times}10^{-4}$ at the optimal operation.
This paper studies the swelling and strength characteristics of unimproved and improved expansive soils in terms of the swell potential, swelling pressure, rate of secondary swelling, unconfined compressive strength and California bearing ratio (CBR). The admixtures used in this study are locally available cement and fly ash. The soils used in this study were taken from the Mae Moh power plant, Lampang Province, in northern Thailand. A conventional consolidation test apparatus was used to determine the swelling of the soil specimen. The optimum admixture contents are determined to efficiently reduce the swelling of unimproved soil. The rate of secondary swelling for unimproved soil is within the range of highly plastic montmorillonite clay, whereas the specimens improved with optimum admixture contents can be classified as non-swelling kaolinite. A soil type affects the swelling pressure. Expansive soil improvement with fly ash alone can reduce swelling percentage but cannot enhance the unconfined compressive strength and CBR. The strength and swelling characteristics can be predicted well by the swelling percentage in this study.
The fin and tube heat exchanger using a two-port tube has in air-conditioner heat exchanger because heat transfer performance. This study investigates the feasibility of a fin and tube heat exchanger using two-port copper tube by mechanical expansion. The optimum size of the tube-expanding bullet for the heat exchanger using two-port tube was through numerical calculation. The heat exchanger using a two-port tube was fabricated by mechanical expansion, and the heat exchanger performance was evaluated condensation and evaporation experiments. Compared to the heat exchanger of a conventional circular tube, the pressure drop per unit length of the heat exchanger with a two-port tube decreased. Compared to the heat exchanger using a conventional circular tube, the overall heat transfer coefficient of heat exchanger with a two-port tube increased up to 13% in the case of condensation, and up to 25% in the case of evaporation. The two-port tube heat exchanger outperforms conventional heat exchanger for air conditioner with a inner grooved circular tube.
