Seismic performance and optimal design of framed underground structures with lead-rubber bearings

  • Lead-rubber bearings (LRBs) have been used worldwide in seismic design of buildings and bridges owing to their stable mechanical properties and good isolation effect. We have investigated the effectiveness of LRBs in framed underground structures on controlling structural seismic responses. Nonlinear dynamic time history analyses were carried out on the well-documented Daikai Station, which collapsed during the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake. Influences of strength ratio (ratio of yield strength of LRBs to yield strength of central column) and shear modulus of rubber on structural seismic responses were studied. As a displacement-based passive energy dissipation device, LRBs reduce dynamic internal forces of framed underground structures and improve their seismic performance. An optimal range of strength ratios was proposed for the case presented. Within this range, LRBs can dissipate maximum input earthquake energy. The maximum shear and moment of the central column can achieve more than 50% reduction, whereas the maximum shear displacement of LRBs is acceptable.

  • A number of effective methods for multiple-attribute group decision making (MAGDM) with interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy numbers (IVIFNs) have been proposed in recent years. However, the different methods frequently yield different, even sometimes contradictory, results for the same problem. In this paper a novel criterion to determine the advantages and disadvantages of different methods is proposed. First, the decision-making process is divided into three parts: translation of experts' preferences, aggregation of experts' opinions, and comparison of the alternatives. Experts' preferences aggregation is considered the core step, and the quality of the collective matrix is considered the most important evaluation index for the aggregation methods. Then, methods to calculate the similarity measure, correlation, correlation coefficient, and energy of the intuitionistic fuzzy matrices are proposed, which are employed to evaluate the collective matrix. Thus, the optimal method can be selected by comparing the collective matrices when all the methods yield different results. Finally, a novel approach for aggregating experts' preferences with IVIFN is presented. In this approach, experts' preferences are mapped as points into two-dimensional planes, with the plant growth simulation algorithm (PGSA) being employed to calculate the optimal rally points, which are inversely mapped to IVIFNs to establish the collective matrix. In the study, four different methods are used to address one example problem to illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

  • This paper presents an AP placement technique considering indoor location-awareness and examines its performance. The proposed AP placement technique is addressed from three performance metrics: location-awareness and AP-based wireless network performance as well as its cost. The proposed AP placement technique consists of meta-heuristic algorithms that yield a near optimal AP configuration for given performance metrics, and deterministic algorithms that improve the fast convergence of the near optimal AP configuration. The performance of the AP placement technique presented in this paper is measured under the environments simulating indoor space, and numerical results obtained by experimental evaluation yield the fast convergence of a near-optimal solution to a given performance metric.

A Robust Conjecture on the Relationship among the Expected Profits of Various Newsvendor Models (여러 가지 뉴스벤더모델의 기대값 사이의 관계에 대한 견고한 추측)

  • The present study provides some extensions over a recent work in Won (2011) which investigates properties of the static newsvendor problem under a schedule involving progressive multiple discounts under the assumption that demand is given exogenously. Khouja (1995, 1996) formulated the extended versions over the classical newsvendor model with various discount policies including all-units discount and/or multiple discounts and found that the extended newsvendor models with discount schedules yield higher optimal expected profits than the classical newsvendor model with no-discounts. In this study, we establish a robust conjecture as a stronger statement than Khouja's findings with regard to the general relationship among the expected profits of newsvendor models in the sense that the conjecture holds for every order quantity as well as the optimal order quantity. The conjecture encourages the newsvendor facing quantity discounts to safely implement her own discounts policy to customer or accept quantity discounts offered by the supplier even if the optimal order quantity cannot be ordered due to additional restrictions such as budget or warehouse capacity constraints because the newsvendor models with quantity discounts always yield higher expected profit than the classic newsvendor model without quantity discounts regardless of the order quantity. Results from wide experiments with various probability distributions of demand strongly support our conjecture.

Effect of Lactate and Corn Steep Liquor on the Production of Bacterial Cellulose by Gluconacetobacter persimmonis $KJ145^T$

  • In this study, we attempted to assess the effects of lactate and com steep liquor (CSL) on the production of bacterial cellulose (BC) by Gluconacetobacter persimmonis $KJ145^T$. The optimal condition for the production of BC was a lactate concentration of 1% (w/v) and a CSL concentration of 10% (w/v). Under these optimal conditions, 6 days of fermentation produced 6.90 g/L of BC. Both the BC production yield and cell growth increased continuously until the 20th day of fermentation, by which time 17.0 g/L had been produced. In a static culture trial, in which plastic containers were used as fermentation chambers for 6 days of fermentation, the BC production yield in the group initially cultured with 500 mL medium was higher than that of the 750 and 1000 mL media. In addition, the texture of the BC was examined according to its post-treatment in order to determine conditions for optimal textural characteristics. The strength, hardness, and other characteristics of the BC were negatively correlated with sucrose concentration, but were largely positively correlated with NaCl concentration. With regards to the effect of pH on textural change, BC strength and hardness were elevated at pH 2 and 8 but reduced at pH 4 and 6, indicating that the texture of the BC is extremely sensitive to treatment conditions.

  • In order to manage and rebuild fishery resources, the fishing effort should be controlled effectively. Especially in the setting up of the proper level of fishing efforts, economic standards as well as biological standards must be carefully considered to promote the sustainable and economically viable development of fisheries. This study aimed to analyze the optimal economic fishing effort ($E_{MEY}$) as the most economically efficient one for the Eastern Sea Danish seine fisheries. The results showed that the optimal economic fishing effort ($E_{MEY}$) of Eastern Sea Danish seine fisheries for blackfin flounder should be reduced by about 27%. That is, reducing fishing efforts up to the level of $E_{MEY}$ could lead to the reduction of fishing costs, thereby resulting in the increased fishing profits.

Production of Hydrolyzed Red Ginseng Residue and Its Application to Lactic Acid Bacteria Cultivation

  • Enzymatic treatment conditions for red ginseng residue (RGR) were investigated to apply RGR as a microbial medium. Polysaccharide hydrolyase and protease were screened to obtain high solid and carbohydrate yields, and a good degree of carbohydrate hydrolysis. The optimal dosage and reaction time for Viscozyme, the chosen polysaccharide hydrolyase, were found to be 1.0% (w/w) and 3 h, respectively. Of the tested proteases, Flavourzyme, whose optimal dosage was 0.5% (w/w), was selected. Co-treatment with the optimal dosages of Flavourzyme and Viscozyme increased solid yield, carbohydrate yield, and degree of carbohydrate hydrolysis by 76%, 65%, and 1,865%, respectively, over levels in non-treated RGR. The culture characteristics of Leuconostoc mesenteroides strain KACC 91459P grown in enzymatically hydrolyzed red ginseng residue (ERGR) and RGR suspensions were compared. After cultivation for 6 h, the viable cell counts of both cell suspensions rapidly increased to $1.3{\times}10^9$ colony-forming units (CFU)/g. Moreover, while the viable cell population drastically decreased to $2.4{\times}10^6\;CFU/g$ for cells grown in RGR medium, it was maintained in cells fermented in ERGR medium for 24 h.

Production of Levulinic Acid Using Glucose Derived from Office Waste Paper (사무용 폐지에서 유래된 글루코오스를 이용한 레불린산 생산)

  • The optimal conditions for producing levulinic acid from office waste paper were investigated. Glucose was produced by enzymatic hydrolysis and its yield maximized by varying the soaking time of the substrate and amounts of enzyme and substrate. The optimal conditions to produce levulinic acid using the hydrolysate were determined by response surface methodology, with reaction temperature and catalyst (sulfuric acid) concentration as independent variables. The production model was assessed with an ANOVA regression analysis, and the results indicate its suitability for levulinic acid production (p, F, and lack-of-fit values were 0.003, 20.1, and 0.058, respectively). The optimal conditions were a reaction time of 56.27 min and catalyst concentration of 5.9% with a predicted yield of 2.588 g/L. We verified the findings under the same conditions and obtained 2.323 g/L of levulinic acid.

Yield Management Models for Two Substitutable Products (두 대체품에 대한 수익관리 모형 연구)

  • Yield management, which originated from the U.S. service industry, uses pricing techniques and information systems to make demand management decisions. Demand uncertainty is an important factor in the area of demand management. A key strategy to reduce the effects of demand uncertainty is substitution. The most generally known type of substitution is inventory-driven substitution, in which consumers substitute an out-of-stock product by buying a similar or other type of product. Another type of substitution is the price-driven substitution, which occurs as a result of price changes. In this research, we consider two market segments that have unique perishable products. We develop yield management optimization models with stochastic demand based on the newsvendor model where inventory-driven and price-driven substitutions are allowed between products in the two market segments. The most significant contribution of this research is that it develops analytical procedures to determine optimal solutions and considers both types of substitution. We also provide detailed theoretical analysis and numerical examples.

Influence of Sowing Time on Growth, Yield and Nutritional Quality of Forage Rape in Spring

  • To determine as optimal sowing time of forage rape in spring time in southern areas of Korea, forage rape cv. Velox, the highest yielding variety among introduced varieties of forage rape, was grown under five different sowing times. Yield components such as plant length, number of branches and number of leaves etc. were higher at the sowing time of Mar. 15 and Mar. 25. The plants sown at Mar. 15 and Mar. 25 also showed highest fresh and dry matter yield. When plants were grown under later sowing time, they showed higher values in content of crude protein and lower values in contents of crude fiber such as Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF), Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF), cellulose and lignin. There was no relationship between variation of In Vitro Dry matter Digestibility (IVDMD) and sowing time. The plants sown at Mar. 15 and Mar. 25 showed highest digestible dry matter yields.
