Proper pretest planning is a vital component of any successful vibration test on engineering structures. The most important issue in dynamic testing of many engineering structures is arriving at the number and optimal placement of sensors. The sensors must be placed on the structure in such a way that all the important dynamic behaviour of a structural system is captured during the course of the test with sufficient accuracy so that the information can be effectively utilised for structural parameter identification or health monitoring. Several optimal sensor placement (OSP) techniques are proposed in the literature and each of these methods have been evaluated with respect to a specific problem encountered in various engineering disciplines like aerospace, civil, mechanical engineering, etc. In the present work, we propose to perform a detailed characteristic evaluation of some selective popular OSP techniques with respect to their application to practical civil engineering problems. Numerical experiments carried out in the paper on various practical civil engineering structures indicate that effective independence (EFI) method is more consistent when compared to all other sensor placement techniques.

This article investigates various transcription techniques for the Legendre pseudospectral (PS) method to compare the pros and cons of each approach. Eight combinations from four different types of collocation points and two discretization methods for dynamic constraints, which differentiate Legendre PS transcription techniques, are implemented to solve a carefully selected test set of nonlinear optimal control problems (NOCPs). The convergence property and prediction accuracy are compared to provide a useful guideline for selecting the best combination. The tested NOCPs consist of the minimum time, minimum energy, and problems with state and control constraints. Therefore, the results drawn from this comparative study apply to the solution of similar types of NOCPs and can mitigate much debate about the best combinations. Additionally, important findings from this study can be used to improve the numerical efficiency of the Legendre PS methods. Three PS applications to the aerospace engineering problems are demonstrated to prove this point.
In this paper we develop algorithms in programming lan-guage SCHEME for implementation of the main first order gradient techniques for unconstrained optimization. Implementation of the de-scent techniques which use non-optimal descent steps as well as imple-mentation of the optimal descent techniques are described. Also we investigate implementation of the global problem called optimization along a line. Developed programs are effective and simpler with re-spect to the corresponding in the procedural programming languages. Several numerical examples are reported.
Stress waves have been used for geophysical and geotechnical applications for more than 50 years. The early-stage applications were simply based on travel-time measurements of stress waves and limited to site characterization. Currently stress-wave techniques are expanded to monitoring processes for grouting of damaged geotechnical structures, compaction of embankment, and deformational analyses for static geotechnical problems. Seismic techniques used to be good enough for rough estimators of engineering properties. Nowadays, the sophisticated modeling theory of stress-wave propagation substantially improved reliability and accuracy of the seismic techniques. In this paper, difficulties involved in currently available seismic techniques are discussed and analyzed. Herein some recently-developed non-intrusive seismic techniques, which make optimal use of stress waves for further improvement of reliability and accuracy, are also presented.
In the preliminary design stage of Prestressed Concrete (PSC) Box Girder Bridges, the design factors(including depth, thickness of web, and jacking force) decided by inexperience designer could heavily affect the final design factors. So there is a possibility that the design ends up with an excessively wasteful design. To aim at an economical design with preventing an excessive design, the optimal design program has been developed by using ADS optimal program and SPCFRAME(PSC Bridge analysis program) in these studies. The optimal design program automatically calculates economically optimized design studies. The optimal design program automatically calculates economically optimized design factors by introducing the optimal design techniques of PSC box girder bridge design. The objective function for optimal design is material cost of box girder and constrained functions are constituted with design specifications and workability. The optimal design techniques used the Sequential Unconstraint Minimization Technique (SUMT) with performing the optimal design program. In this study, We designed unprismatic section bridge and prismatic section bridge in the same design condition by optimal design program developed in this study. By analyzing the results we suggested the practical form of tendon's layout comparing the optimal desingns on the basis of each tendon's layout.
A hybrid structural design and optimization methodology that combines the strengths of genetic algorithms, local search techniques, and parallel computing is developed to evolve optimal truss systems in this research effort. The primary objective that is met in evolving near-optimal or optimal structural systems using this approach is the capability of satisfying user-defined design criteria while minimizing the computational time required. The application of genetic algorithms to the design and optimization of truss systems supports conceptual design by facilitating the exploration of new design alternatives. In addition, final shape optimization of the evolved designs is supported through the refinement of member sizes using local search techniques for further improvement. The use of the hybrid approach, therefore, enhances the overall process of structural design. Parallel computing is implemented to reduce the total computation time required to obtain near-optimal designs. The support of human-computer interaction during layout optimization and local optimization is also discussed since it assists in evolving optimal truss systems that better satisfy a user's design requirements and design preferences.
The complexity of nonlinear systems makes it difficult to ascertain their behavior using classical methods of analysis. Many efforts have been focused on the advanced algorithms and techniques that hold the promise of improving real-time optimal control while at the same time providing higher accuracy. In this paper, a fuzzy cell mapping method of real-time optimal control far nonlinear dynamical systems is proposed. This approach combines fuzzy logic with cell mapping techniques in order to find the optimal input level and optimal time interval in the finite set which change the state of a system to achieve a desired obiective. In order to illustrate this method, we analyze the behavior of an inverted pendulum using fuzzy cell mapping.
This paper uses genetic algorithm (GA) for optimal control. GA can find optimal control profile, but the profile may be oscillating feature. To make profile smooth, fuzzy genetic algorithm (FGA) is proposed. GA with fuzzy logic techniques for optimal control can make optimal control profile smooth. We describe the Fuzzy Genetic Algorithm that uses a fuzzy knowledge based system to control GA search. Result from the simulation example shows that GA can find optimal control profile and FGA makes a performance improvement over a simple GA.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review articles in order to establish optimal contraction intensity and duration in the performance of relaxation techniques for maximal increase in range of motion. Methods: The Cochrane, EBSCO, Embase, Medline, ProQuest, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Scopus databases were used to search articles from 1990 to January 2016. The search terms were "contract relax," "hold relax," "muscle energy technique (MET)," and "proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching." Only experimental human studies (randomized controlled trials) that compared the effects of varying intensity and duration of isometric contraction were included. Non-English language and unpublished studies were excluded. Results: A total of 2,156 articles were initially identified, with only five eventually meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Three studies compared the effects of varying intensity in isometric contraction and two studies compared the effects of varying duration in isometric contraction with regard to range of motion (ROM). Two articles suggested that submaximal voluntary isometric contraction was more effective than maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) in the improvement of ROM. One article showed that a longer contraction time led to greater increases in ROM. Conclusion: Submaximal voluntary isometric contraction was recommended during contract-relax exercises in healthy people. Lack of evidence makes it difficult to suggest the optimal duration of isometric contraction during relaxation techniques. For future research, high-quality evidence will be needed to establish the optimal contraction intensity for maximum improvement of ROM.
This article derived a hybrid coupling technique using the higher-order displacement polynomial and three soft computing techniques (teaching learning-based optimization, particle swarm optimization, and artificial bee colony) to predict the optimal stacking sequence of the layered structure and the corresponding frequency values. The higher-order displacement kinematics is adopted for the mathematical model derivation considering the necessary stress and stain continuity and the elimination of shear correction factor. A nine noded isoparametric Lagrangian element (eighty-one degrees of freedom at each node) is engaged for the discretisation and the desired model equation derived via the classical Hamilton's principle. Subsequently, three soft computing techniques are employed to predict the maximum natural frequency values corresponding to their optimum layer sequences via a suitable home-made computer code. The finite element convergence rate including the optimal solution stability is established through the iterative solutions. Further, the predicted optimal stacking sequence including the accuracy of the frequency values are verified with adequate comparison studies. Lastly, the derived hybrid models are explored further to by solving different numerical examples for the combined structural parameters (length to width ratio, length to thickness ratio and orthotropicity on frequency and layer-sequence) and the implicit behavior discuss in details.
