This work presents numerical optimization for design of staggered arrays of dimples printed on opposite surfaces of a cooling channel with a fast and elitist Non-Dominated Sorting of Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) of multi-objective optimization. As Pareto optimal front produces a set of optimal solutions, the trends of objective functions with design variables are predicted by hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. The problem is defined by three non-dimensional geometric design variables composed of dimpled channel height, dimple print diameter, dimple spacing and dimple depth to maximize heat transfer rate compromising with pressure drop. Twenty designs generated by Latin hypercube sampling were evaluated by Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver and the evaluated objectives were used to construct Pareto optimal front through hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. The optimum designs were grouped by k-mean clustering technique and some of the clustered points were evaluated by flow analysis. With increase in dimple depth, heat transfer rate increases and at the same time pressure drop also increases, while opposite behavior is obtained for the dimple spacing. The heat transfer performance is related to the vertical motion of the flow and the reattachment length in the dimple.
A hydraulic quick coupler is a component used to easily connect or disconnect pipes or hoses that transfer high pressure fluid without leakage in various mechanical devices. In this study, to obtain an optimal design of a 3/8" hydraulic quick coupler, the effect of different shapes of the internal piston on the internal flow characteristics of the coupler was analyzed and evaluated through numerical analysis based on computational fluid dynamics. Subsequently, the optimal shape design of the internal piston was obtained by comparing the flow characteristics results such as velocity distribution, temperature distribution, and the pressure drop of the hydraulic quick coupler.
Water network partitioning (WNP) is an initiative technique to divide the original water distribution network (WDN) into several sub-networks with only sparse connections between them called, District Metered Areas (DMAs). Operating and managing (O&M) WDN through DMAs is bringing many advantages, such as quantification and detection of water leakage, uniform pressure management, isolation from chemical contamination. The research of WNP recently has been highlighted by applying different methods for dividing a network into a specified number of DMAs. However, it is an open question on how to determine the optimal number of DMAs for a given network. In this study, we present a method to divide an original WDN into DMAs (called Clustering) based on community structure algorithm for auto-creation of suitable DMAs. To that aim, many hydraulic properties are taken into consideration to form the appropriate DMAs, in which each DMA is controlled as uniform as possible in terms of pressure, elevation, and water demand. In a second phase, called Sectorization, the flow meters and control valves are optimally placed to divide the DMAs, while minimizing the pressure reduction. To comprehensively evaluate the WNP performance and determine optimal number of DMAs for given WDN, we apply the framework of multiple-criteria decision analysis. The proposed method is demonstrated using a real-life benchmark network and obtained permissible results. The approach is a decision-support scheme for water utilities to make optimal decisions when designing the DMAs of their WDNs.
The present experimental investigation focuses on finding optimal parametric data-set of laser micro-drilling operation with minimum taper and Heat-affected zone during laser micro-drilling of Carbon Nanotube/Epoxy-based composite materials. Experiments have been conducted as per Box-Behnken design (BBD) techniques considering cutting speed, lamp current, pulse frequency and air pressure as input process parameters. Then, the relationship between control parameters and output responses is developed using second-order nonlinear regression models. The analysis of variance test has also been performed to check the adequacy of the developed mathematical model. Using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and an Accelerated particle swarm optimization (APSO) technique, optimum process parameters are evaluated and compared. Moreover, confirmation tests are conducted with the optimal parameter settings obtained from RSM and APSO and improvement in performance parameter is noticed in each case. The optimal process parameter setting obtained from predictive RSM based APSO techniques are speed=150 (m/s), current=22 (amp), pulse frequency (3 kHz), Air pressure (1 kg/cm2) for Taper and speed=150 (m/s), current=22 (amp), pulse frequency (3 kHz), air pressure (3 kg/cm2) for HAZ. From the confirmatory experimental result, it is observed that the APSO metaheuristic algorithm performs efficiently for optimizing the responses during laser micro-drilling process of nanocomposites both in individual and multi-objective optimization.
Determination of geometric design parameters of a second-throat type annual supersonic ejector is described. Tested geometric parameters were primary nozzle area ratio, cross-sectional area of second-throat, L/D ratio of second-throat and primary flow injection angle. Varying these four geometric parameters, we build a test matrix made of 81 test conditions, and experimental apparatus was fabricated to accommodate them. For each test condition, the stagnation pressure of primary flow and the static pressure of the secondary flow were measured simultaneously along with their transition to steady operation and finally to unstarting condition. Comparing the performance curve of every case focused on starting pressure, the unstarting pressure and the minimum secondary pressure, we could derive correlations that the parameters have on the performance of the ejector and presented the optimal design method of the ejector. Additional experiments were carried out to find effects of temperature and mass flow rate of the secondary flow.
This study was conducted to mass-produce brown stock optimized by using a high-pressure heating extractor and to use brown stock as a material for developing various products. For these purposes, we attempted to produce standardized brown stock by extracting brown stock using a high-pressure heating extractor and compared it with brown stock extracted by the traditional method in terms of general elements and mechanical and sensory characteristics. With regard to how to prepare optimal brown stock, the best brown stock was that extracted seven times repeatedly by the traditional method, but the method had a large economic loss in terms of material consumption and took a long time in extraction. Thus, considering time and labor, it was concluded that extraction at 120$^{\circ}C$ for 15 hours using a high-pressure heating extractor is the optimal extraction condition in terms of economic efficiency and quality. The results of this study are expected to be useful as a practical material for making brown stock production process more convenient, applying cooks' traditional cooking techniques to mass production, maintaining standardized superior quality and taste, and improving shelf life.
In the effort on cost reduction in marine equipment company, the medium sized impeller blade ($500mm{\times}200mm{\times}20mm$) of an axial flow pan was manufactured by the high pressure die casting, with which was replaced the gravity die casting. High pressure die casting is a practical alternative because of some advantages such as excellent accuracy and smooth cast surface as well as cost reduction if a certain amount of porosity in the parts can be minimized. In order to reduce the porosity in the center of the neck which is thickest region of the impeller blade, the several gate designs were proposed in this work. The flow simulations for each gate design were performed and then the optimal design was determined by considering the air pressure distribution in neck section. Finally, the size of porosity in the neck of the die cast impeller blade for optimal design was less than 1mm, which satisfied the requirement.
This study wa attempted to extract the Potash-Ammonia Fertilyzer in most satisfactory yield from the Uncalcinecl Domestic Alunite ore applying an optimal reaction conditions (Ammonia water concentration and applicable reaction pressure, etc.), it was found that almost all amount of $K_2SO_4$ was extracted in the forms of $K_2SO_4·(NH_4)_2SO_4$mixture under such conditions. The experimental data to note are as follows: 1. The optimal pressure applied to the reaction was 600 to 700 Psig. 2. The optimal concentration of Ammonia water was 7 Mol/L. 3. The reaction time needed was 3 hours. 4. The extraction rate and degree were not at variance with sorts and occurrences of Alunite ore.
