  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of shot peening on the fatigue strength and fatigue life of two kinds of aluminum alloys. The fatigue strength behavior of aluminum alloys were estimated by the stress ratio and shot velocities. The fatigue life and strength increased with increasing the test shot velocity. However, at the shot velocity range between 50m/s and 70m/s, the compressive residual stress phenomena were observed in test conditions of different shot velocity. The optimal shot velocity is acquired by considering the peak values of the compressive residual stress, dislocations, brittle striation, slip, and fisheye on the fracture surface of test specimen. It was observed from the SEM observation on the deformed specimen that the brittle striation, fisheye were showed in the intergranular fracture structure boundaries at the this velocities. Therefore, fatigue strength and fatigue life would be considered that shot velocity has close relationship with the compressive residual stress.

  • The experimental study has been performed through residual stress using the Ti6Al4V, investigate the effect of laser shock peening on laser welding process residual stress of Ti6Al4V welds in a reduce safety weld zone. This research evaluated the effects of shock waves from laser shock peening with a pulsed Nd:YAG laser on Ti6Al4V welding specimens, through the analysis of the residual stress of the specimens. The residual stress could be formed by the depth of 1 mm if the proposed method of reducing the residual stress is performed in the optimal condition. The welded structures and products during the production process increase the mechanical property of repeated stress, which could be expected to extend the fatigue life of the structure.

  • At present, welding technology is not only emphasized in the development of manufacturing technology but its application is also expanding. In these systems, attempts have been made to use SUS as a high-temperature material for special applications, and in improvements in manufacturing technologies bear watching, together with an increase in the use rate. Specifically, three-dimensional wings are often used for fasteners with the purpose of decreasing the weight (정해용, 2007). However, due to developments in welding technology, there has been a recent tendency to replace existing assembly methods with welding. Specifically, if laser welding techniques are applied, the heat-affected zone can be minimized compared toother welding techniques. However, in the case of these special welding techniques, there is an increase in residual stress, which fatally affects the fatigue life. In order to remove the residual stress and its effect on fatigue life, shot-peening is executed. The intention of this study was to obtain the optimal conditions for shot-peening.

  • The spring is an important mechanical parts to improve the functions of precision machines, automobiles, ships, industrial machines, and IT devices etc.. The hinge mechanism for LCD monitors is very important to support and maintain the proper position of monitor panel, and the tension spring which is a major parts of hinge mechanism plays a significant roll to provide the supporting force positioning the monitor panel. In this paper, an analysis and experiment were carried out to investigate the fatigue characteristics of the tension spring of hinge mechanism, such as hardness test, fatigue test and fractography analysis. As a result of this study the SWPB with heat treatment and shot peening was found to have the optimal design conditions of tension spring for LCD monitor hinge mechanism.

  • In this paper, the effect of the compressive residual stresses which were obtained under the various shot velocities of shot balls on the fatigue behaviors of a spring steel, were investigated. The examination of CT specimen test were executed with the materials(JISG SUP9) which are being commonly used for the springs of automotive vehicles. As a result, the optimal shot velocity of shot balls were acquired considering the peak values of the compressive residual stresses on the surface of specimen and effect on the speed of the fatigue crack propagation da/dN in stage II and the threshold stress intensity factor range Δ$K_{th}$ in stage I. Also the material constant C and the crack propagation index m in the formula of paris law da/dN= C $({\Delta}K^m)$ were suggested in this work to estimate the dependency on the shot velocity.

  • A shot blasting process is to improve the surface quality of stainless steels. The process is similar to a well-known shot peening that is used to strengthen the surface via the residual stress. In the shot blasting process, it is important to decide many parameters, such as the size, incident angle and velocity of shot balls, to effectively get rid of the iron oxide on the surface of stainless steels. In this study, the simulation of the shot blasting process is carried out by a finite element software, which can help to find out the optimal design parameters to cause the delamination of the iron oxide from the stainless steel substrate. The results obtained are also compared to those of the discrete element method to verify them.
