In this study, the weight and the connections type layout of low-rise eccentrically braced frame (EBF) have been optimized based on performance-based design method. For this purpose, two objective functions were defined based on two different aspects on rigid connections, in one of which minimization and in the other one, maximization of the number of rigid connections was considered. These two objective functions seek to increase the area under the pushover curve, in addition to the reduction of the weight and selection of the optimum connections type layout. The performance of these objective functions was investigated in optimal design of a three-story eccentrically braced frame, using two meta-heuristic algorithms: Enhanced Colliding Bodies Optimization (ECBO) and Enhanced Vibrating Particles System (EVPS). Then, the reliability indices of the optimal designs for both objective functions were calculated for the story lateral drift limits using Monte-Carlo Simulation (MCS) method. Based on the reliability assessment results of the optimal designs and taking the three levels of safety into account, the final designs were selected and their specifications were compared.

This study proposes a unified method to design toroidal transformer and its optimal design algorithm. This unified design method was derived from the fundamental equation of power on the basis of electromagnetic energy of a core and the definition of three parameters(K1, K2, KW) that influence the form of a core and the ratio of a core and coil. Accordingly this design method condenses the whole data for design of toroidal transformer to a standard variable which is the inner diameter of a core. The minimal cost, weight and volume values of the transformer were computed by means of the algorithm to search the optimal values of the parameters. Furthermore, through the CAD, the efficiency of this unified design method and optimal algorithm proposed in this paper was confirmed.
The present paper is concerned with the optimal control and/or design of symmetric and antisymmetric composite laminate with two piezoelectric layers bonded to the opposite surfaces of the laminate, and placed symmetrically with respect to the middle plane. For the optimal control problem, Liapunov-Bellman theory is used to minimize the dynamic response of the laminate. The dynamic response of the laminate comprises a weight sum of the control objective (the total vibrational energy) and a penalty functional including the control force. Simultaneously with the active control, thicknesses and the orientation angles of layers are taken as design variables to achieve optimum design. The formulation is based on various plate theories for various boundary conditions. Explicit solutions for the control function and controlled deflections are obtained in forms of double series. Numerical results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control and design mechanism, and to investigate the effects of various laminate parameters on the control and design process.
Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of Optimal humidification during Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (nCPAP) for Extremely Low Birth Weight Infant (ELBWI). Methods: The study design was a pre-test-post-test nonequivalent nonsynchronized quasi-experimental design. The participants were 218 ELBWI on nCPAP (experimental group: 102 and control group: 116). Data collection was conducted from January 2005 to April 2010. In order to measure and analyze the nCPAP duration, reintubation and nasal condition, Chi-square test and t-test were used. Results: Hypothesis 1, that the duration with nCPAP in the experimental group is longer than that of the control group and hypothesis 2-3, that the rate of reintubation and nasal problems in the experimental group are lower than the control group, were all supported as there were statistically significant differences between two groups. Conclusion: The findings suggest that the Optimal humidification in this study is an efficient intervention because it helps increase the last time of nCPAP with ELBWI and minimize complications. It is expected that Optimal humidification is beneficial and helpful in preventing and caring for respiratory problems in these infants.

In this paper, general design process for Tracked Fighting Vehicle has been suggested. Stress analysis and optimal design for ply angle of IFV's composite upper hull has been calculated using KMA CIFV and it is contained exploratory development of design process. In this point, this paper applied composite to IFV's upper hull. Finite element mesh has been made using Matlab program, and we have analyzed stress based on the given material properties and ply arrangement. For each load condition, load distribution in plane and failure index are calculated by using Tasi-Hill criterion, which is composite failure criterion and analyzing change of failure index as change of ply angle. Finally, optimal ply angles of upper hull are calculated using KMA CIFV. We can estimate the decrease of weight for IFV's upper hull.

Design and optimization study has been performed to obtain a supersonic air.launching mission for the nanosat launcher. Given mission is to launch 10kg payload to target orbit of $700km{\times}700km$. Additional design constraints are imposed by the mother plane. After the required velocity is obtained, the stag ing optimization is carried out. Serial analyses for the propulsion system and aerodynamics are performed then, the rocket trajectory optimization has been carried out. After several mission design and optimization iterations, the optimized mission which satisfies the mission target is obtained. Total weight of the three-staged air-launching rocket is 1231.4kg and the payload weight is 10 kg.

Pitched roof frames are widely used in construction of the industrial buildings, gyms, schools and colleges, fire stations, storages, hangars and many other low rise structures. The weight and shape of the gable frames with tapered members, as a familiar group of the pitched roof frames, are highly dependent on the properties of the member cross-sectional. In this work Enhanced Colliding Bodies Optimization (ECBO) is utilized for optimal design of three gable frames with tapered members. In order to optimize the frames, the design is performed using the AISC specifications for stress, displacement and stability constraints. The design constraints and weight of the gable frames are computed from the cross-section of members. These optimum weights are obtained using aforementioned optimization algorithms considering the cross-sections of the members and design constraints as optimization variables and constraints, respectively. A comparative study of the PSO and CBO with ECBO is also performed to illustrate the importance of the enhancement of the utilized optimization algorithm.

Owing to miniaturization and low-power electronics, mobile, implanted, and wearable devices have become the main trends of electronics during the past decade. There has been much research regarding energy harvesting to achieve battery-free or self-powered devices. The optimal design problems of a double-pendulum kinetic-energy harvester from human motion are studied in this paper. For the given form factor, the weight of the harvester, and the known human excitation, the optimal design problem is solved using a dynamic non-linear double-pendulum model and an electric generator. The average electrical power was selected as the performance index for the given time period. A double-pendulum harvester was proven to be more efficient than a single-pendulum harvester when the appropriate parameters were used.

This paper describes the application of genetic algorithm(GA) in the discrete optimal design of truss structures. Stochastic processes generate an intial population of design and then apply principles of natural selection/survival of the fittest to improve the design. GA is applied to minimum weight of truss subject to stress and displacement constraints under multiple loading conditions. First, optimum solutions obtained from GA are compared to verify the reliability of GA with m well-known transmission tower structure which is referred to by other authors. Then, discrete optimal design is performed in satisfying service conditions of truss structure with commercially available fabricated sizes. From the results, it is found that GA search technique is very effective for discrete optimal design of truss structure and has high robustness.
In this research, a newly developed nature-inspired optimization method, the Lion Pride Optimization algorithm (LPOA), is utilized for optimal design of composite steel box girder bridges. A composite box girder bridge is one of the common types of bridges used for medium spans due to their economic, aesthetic, and structural benefits. The aim of the present optimization procedure is to provide a feasible set of design variables in order to minimize the weight of the steel trapezoidal box girders. The solution space is delimited by different types of design constraints specified by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. Additionally, the optimal solution obtained by LPOA is compared to the results of other well-established meta-heuristic algorithms, namely Gray Wolf Optimization (GWO), Ant Lion Optimizer (ALO) and the results of former researches. By this comparison the capability of the LPOA in optimal design of composite steel box girder bridges is demonstrated.
