The purpose of this study was to prepare Daebong persimmon-fermented liquor supplemented with Prunus mume fruit to promote the consumption of Daebong persimmon and to develop local specialties. As fermentation progressed, the alcohol content rapidly increased, whereas the sugar content decreased. With the production of CO2 from the second day of fermentation, the epidermis and flesh solids of the Daebong persimmons began mixing together and rose to the surface of the fermentation container. This phenomenon continued until the fourth and fifth days of fermentation; on the fifth day, the ethanol and sugar contents were 11.4% and 9.8°Brix, respectively. A concentration of 6 to 9% (w/w) P. mume fruit was found to be the optimal amount during Daebong persimmon fermentation. When the fermented liquor was stored for 60 days at 5℃, the pH and ethanol content showed no significant change during the aging period. As aging progressed, the content of sugar slowly decreased in both the control sample and in the one to which P. mume was added, showing 9.8 and 10.4 mg/ml at the eighth week post-aging, respectively. The total acid content was 0.79~0.81% at the beginning of aging but slightly increased to 0.84~0.86% in the second week of aging. As a result of the sensory test, the sour taste, sweetness, and flavor were slightly stronger in the P. mume fruit group than in the control group.
The aim of present study was to characterize phosphate uptake and to investigate the mechanism for the insulin and insulin-like growth factor(IGF) stimulation of phosphate uptake in primary cultured rabbit renal proximal tubule cells. Results were as follows : 1. The primary cultured proximal tubule cells had accumulated $6.68{\pm}0.70$ nmole phosphate/mg protein in the presence of 140 mM NaCl and $2.07{\pm}0.17$ nmole phosphate/mg protein in the presence of 140 mM KCl during a 60 minute uptake period. Raising the concentration of extracellular phosphate to 100 mM$(48.33{\pm}1.76\;pmole/mg\;protein/min)$ induced decrease in phosphate uptake compared with that in control cells maintained in 1 mM phosphate$(190.66{\pm}13.01\;pmole/mg\;protein/min)$. Optimal phosphate uptake was observed at pH 6.5 in the presence of 140 mM NaCl. Phosphate uptake at pH 7.2 and pH 7.9 decreased to $83.06{\pm}5.75%\;and\;74.61{\pm}3.29%$ of that of pH 6.5, respectively. 2. Phosphate uptake was inhibited by iodoacetic acid(IAA) or valinomycin treatment $(62.41{\pm}4.40%\;and\;12.80{\pm}1.64%\;of\;that\;of\;control,\;respectively)$. When IAA and valinomycin were added together, phosphate uptake was inhibited to $8.04{\pm}0.61%$ of that of control. Phosphate uptake by the primary proximal tubule cells was significantly reduced by ouabain treatment$(80.27{\pm}6.96%\;of\;that\;of\;control)$. Inhibition of protein and/or RNA synthesis by either cycloheximide or actinomycin D markedly attenuated phosphate uptake. 3. Extracellular CAMP and phorbol 12-myristate 13 acetate(PMA) decreased phosphate uptake in a dose-dependent manner in all experimental conditions. Treatment of cells with pertussis toxin or cholera toxin inhibited phosphate uptake. cAMP concentration between $10^{-6}\;M\;and\;10^{-4}\;M$ significantly inhibited phosphate uptake. Phosphate uptake was blocked to about 25% of that of control at 100 ng/ml PMA. 3-Isobutyl-1-methyl-xanthine(IBMX) inhibited phosphate uptake. However, in the presence of IBMX, the inhibitory effect of exogenous cAMP was not significantly potentiated. Forskolin decreased phosphate transport. Acetylsalicylic acid did not inhibit phosphate uptake. The 1,2-dioctanoyl-sn-glycorol(DAG) and 1-oleoyl-2-acetyl-sn- glycerol(OAG) showed a inhibitory effect. However, staurosporine had no effect on phosphate uptake. When PMA and staurosporine were treated together, inhibition of phosphate uptake was not observed. In conclusion, phosphate uptake is stimulated by high sodium and low phosphate and pH 6.5 in the culture medium. Membrane potential and intracellular energy levels are also an important factor fer phosphate transport. Insulin and IGF-I stimulate phosphate uptake through a mechanisms that involve do novo protein and/or RNA synthesis and decrease of intracellular cAMP level. Also protein kinase C(PKC) is may play a regulatory role in transducing the insulin and IGF-I signal for phosphate transport in primary cultured proximal tubule cells.
Objective: To analyze the treatment-related parameters after the radiotherapy of T1N0 squamous cell carcinoma of the glottic larynx. Materials and Methods: Between October 1989 and August 2000, 54 patients with histologically proven T1N0 squamous cell carcinoma of the glottic larynx who received definitive radiation therapy in Department of Radiation Oncology, Asan Medical Center were analyzed. They were all males with age ranged from 31 to 80 years (median 61 years). 1997 AJCC stages were 31 T1a, 23 T1b. Patients were treated with 4-MV X-rays with a parallel-opposed two-field technique. Ten patients received 66.0-68.4Gy at 1.2Gy per fraction twice daily, 21 patients received 64.8-66.6Gy at 1.8Gy per fraction once daily, and 23 patients received 66.0Gy at 2.0Gy per fraction once daily. Follow-up period was 16-119 months (median 56 months). Results: 5-year overall survival and local control rates for patients with T1 lesions were 87.0% and 88.5%, respectively. 5-year local control with larynx preservation rate was 90.5%. Host and tumor-related prognostic factors including age, stage, anterior commissure involvement and tumor bulk proved not to be significant. Only shorter overall treatment time among treatment-related factors had correlation with imporved local control. Conclusion: Comparable high local control rate with organ preservation was achieved with primary radiation therapy and salvage surgery. Shortening of overall treatment time is related to improved local control rate. To determine the optimal fractionation scheme, randomized trial is mandatory.

Devices have a lot of small breakdowns rather than big breakdowns. But it often wastes time and increases cost of maintenance, such as calling a service technician for small breakdowns. So, if we use remote control and monitoring service using Internet of Things, we can minimize the time period and cost for the maintenance. However, security is important because remote control and monitoring services contain personal information which when leaked, may be dangerous. There are many types of Internet based monitoring devices that are in use, but it is difficult to expect a high level of security because there are many cases in which the performance is minimal. Therefore, in this paper, we classify remote control and monitoring services based on Internet of Things type and derive encryption requirement for four types. We also compared and analyzed the lightweight cryptographic algorithms that can be expected to use high performance even on the Internet of Things. And it is derived that LED is used as a equipment management type, DESLX as a environment management type, CLEFIA as a healthcare management type and LEA as a security management type are the optimal lightweight cryptographic algorithms for each type.
Myrionecta rubra, a mixotrophic ciliate, is a cosmopolitan red tide species which is commonly found in neritic and estuarine waters. M. rubra had long been listed as an “nculturable protist”until 2 different laboratory strains were finally established in 2 research groups at the beginning of this century, enabling us to perform initiative investigation into various aspect of the live M. rubra strains (Gustafson et al. 2000; Yih et al. 2004b; Johnson and Stoecker 2005). Field sampling was carried out on high tide at 2 fixed stations around Kunsan Inner Harbor (St.1 near the Estuarine Weir and St.2 off Kunsan Ferry Station) every other day for 4 months from mid-February 2004 to understand detailed figure of the recurrent spring blooms of M. rubra following the onset of the water gates operation of the Keum River Estuarine Weir on August 1994. With its maximum abundance of 272 cells mL$^{-1}$ in St.1, fluctuation pattern of the M. rubra population at the 2 stations was strikingly similar. Notable growth of M. rubra population started on late April, to cause M. rubra red tides during one month from mid-May in which “xceptionally low salinity days”without its red tide were intermittently inserted. High abundance of M. rubra over 50 cells mL$^{-1}$ was recorded at samples with their water temperature and salinity higher than 15${^{\circ}C}$ and 4.0 psu, respectively. During pre-bloom period when salinity fluctuation is moderate and the water temperature is cooler than 15°C, Skeletonema costatum, a chain-forming centric diatom, was most dominant. Cyanobacterial species such as Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Phormidium sp. replaced other dominant phytoplankters on the days with “xceptionally low salinity”even during the main blooming period of M. rubra. To summarize, M. rubra could form spring blooms in Keum River Estuary when the level of salinity fluctuation was more severe than that for the dominant diatom Skeletonema costatum and milder than that for the predominance by freshwater cyanobacteria. Therefore, optimal control of the scale and frequency of freshwater discharges might lead us to partially modify the fluctuation pattern of M. rubra populations as well as the period of spring blooms by M. rubra in Keum River Estuary. Sampling time interval of 2 days for the present study or daily sampling was concluded to be minimally required for the detailed exploration into the spring blooms by M. rubra populations in estuaries with weirs like Keum River Estuary.

This experiment was conducted in three trials to evaluate optimal ambient temperature for a novel milk replacer feeding system designed for early-weaned pigs, compared to commercial dry diets fed within a conventional hot nursery. A total of 165 PIC genotype pigs were weaned at $13.89{\pm}0.7$ days of age and allotted to one of two dietary treatments in three trials based on weight and litter origin. Each trial consisted of pigs fed dry diets (DD) and pigs fed milk replacer (MR) which was offered in one of 3 different ambient temperatures. Pigs fed milk replacer were housed in a specialized nursery building in which one half of each pen contained an enclosed hover that was thermostatically maintained at $32^{\circ}C$ while the exterior ambient temperature (where milk was fed) was set at either 17 (trial 1), 24 (trial 2) or $32^{\circ}C$ (trial 3). Pigs fed dry diets with the conventional nursery were maintained at $30^{\circ}C$ for each trial. From d 21 to d 49, all pigs were fed DD within a standardized hot nursery environment. During the first week (d 14-21), pigs fed MR showed increased ADG from 214% to 228% over control pigs fed DD (p<0.001), regardless of ambient temperature. As ambient temperature was increased from 17 to 24 to $32^{\circ}C$, ADG of MR-fed pigs was increased by 214%, 220% and 228% over those of pigs fed DD, respectively. ADFIs of MR-fed pigs at $17^{\circ}C$, $24^{\circ}C$, and $32^{\circ}C$ compared with pigs fed DD were increased by 108%, 139% and 164% from d 14 to d 21, respectively. Fed efficiency (G/F) of MR-fed pigs at $17^{\circ}C$, $24^{\circ}C$, and $32^{\circ}C$ compared with pigs fed DD were 199%, 162% and 139% of those of pigs fed DD, respectively. As ambient temperature increased, diarrhea scores showed a slight tendency to increase. The advantage of MR feeding was greater when the ambient temperature was higher, but G/F was impaired with increased ambient temperature. We conclude that ambient temperature within the specialized nursery influenced behavior, MR feed intake, and probably piglet energy expenditure. There were no differences between MR-fed and DD-fed pigs for ADG, ADFI and G/F in the subsequent growth period (d 21 to d 49, p>0.05). Maximal advantage of MR feeding was obtained at the intermediate ($24^{\circ}C$) ambient temperature during the overall period (p<0.05). Results from this experiment indicate that a milk replacer feeding system utilized in the early postweaning period can maximize pig growth performance, and that ADG, ADFI and G/F were affected by different ambient temperatures within MR-fed pigs. The high or low temperatures could not support the maximal growth of pigs fed MR.
The objective of this study was to find optimal planting season of the effect of vegetation competition around planting tree. This study evaluates the possibility of extending the planting period of containerized seedling of Pinus densiflora (1-0 year). We planted seedling at three different seasons (spring, summer, fall) at 18 plots in 3 locations. Planting sites were composed of vigorous vegetation (Site A) and less vigorous vegetation (Site B). For over 3 years, the study investigated survival rate, growth of root collar diameter and height, and biomass of containerized seedling of P. densiflora. In all sites, containerized seedling of P. densiflora showed high survival rate in summer planting. Height and root collar diameter of containerized seedling of P. densiflora were the highest in summer planting, but in the initial period after planting growth was not good. After time passed, growth rate was increased. Site B showed better growth than Site A. Biomass was the highest in summer planting and also the highest in Site B. These results suggest that planting period can be extended by using containerized seedling and vegetation control in the initial is very important for survival and growth of containerized seedling.

To investigate the blossom infection risk of fire blight on pears, the program Maryblyt has been executed from 2018 to 2022 based on meteorological data from central-Korean cities where fire blight has occurred as well as from southern Korean cities where the disease has not yet occurred. In the past five years, years with the highest risk of pear blossom blight were 2022 and 2019. To identify the optimal time for spraying, we studied the spray mode according to the Maryblyt model and recommend spraying streptomycin on the day after a "High" warning and then one day before forecasted precipitation during the blossom period. Maryblyt also recommends to initiate surgical controls from mid-May for canker blight symptoms on pear trees owing to over-wintering canker in Korea. Web-cam pictures from pear orchards at Cheonan, Icheon, Sangju, and Naju during the flowering period of pear trees were used for comparing real data and constructing a phenological model. The actual starting dates of flowering at southern cities such as Sangju and Naju were consistently earlier than those calculated by the model. It is thus necessary to improve the forecasting model to include field risks by recording the actual flowering period and the first day of the fire blight symptoms, according to the farmers, as well as mist or dew-fall, which are not easily identifiable from meteorological records.
This study was conducted to investigate the optimal management interval in 33 healthy adults by observing changes in oral health on the basis of the plaque control index and gingival index. When plaque control score was compared according to the period, it was found that oral hygiene management was the best in the fourth visit (p<0.05). Improved oral hygiene status was observed during the 3- and 6-month follow-up (p<0.05). Regarding gingival index, the fourth visit showed the healthiest gingival status (p<0.05). At the 3-month follow-up, the gingival index worsened, but a healthy gingival status was attained by 6-month follow-up (p<0.05). The plaque control score according to interest in dental health showed that the 'interested' group had good oral hygiene management (p<0.05). As a motivation for oral hygiene status and gingival health, examination with a 'phase contrast microscope' in the first visit and calculation of the 'evaluation index' in the follow-up visit tended to improve the patients' ability for oral hygiene management (p>0.05). The questionnaire survey showed, that the optimal management interval was 1, 3, and 6 months. As a result, with the effective management interval for the preventive management program focused on professional mechanical tooth cleaning, which was administered weekly, the maximum ability for oral hygiene management was attained at the fourth visit. The effective management period was 1 month. The use of a phase contrast microscope and the calculation of the evaluation index for oral hygiene management could influence the motivation to improve oral hygiene management.
As part of Korean retinal prosthesis project, we have provided preliminary experimental results regarding voltage parameters for the stimulation of chemically degenerated rabbit retina. Since our APB-treated chemically degenerated retina is only ON-pathway blocked, now we switch our experiments to more appropriate retinal degeneration model, genetically degenerated retina model (RD mouse: rd/rd (C3H/HeJ)). Before studying with RD mouse, we started control experiments with normal SD rat to understand characteristics of retinal ganglion ceil activity with postnatal maturation in rodents. Ganglion cell activities were recorded with 8${\times}$8 multi-electrode array. Moving spontaneous bursts appeared until postnatal day of 15. During pre-eye opening period, no light evoked response appeared. After postnatal day of 2 weeks (post-eye opening period), ON-, OFF- and ON/OFF response appeared. The fractional distributions of ON, OFF, and ON/OFF ganglion cell is about $40\%,\;50\%$, and $5\%$. The percentage ($\%$) of light evoked response in each dorso-temporal, ventral, and dorso-nasal area of eye is about $50\%,\;37.5\%$ and $12.5\%$, respectively. We concluded that the optimal period for experiment in rodent is about postnatal day of 2${\~}$3 weeks.
