In this work, Self-adaptive Differential Evolutionary (SaDE) algorithm is proposed to solve Optimal Location and Size of Capacitor (OLSC) problem in radial distribution networks. To obtain the SaDE algorithm, two improvements have been applied on control parameters of mutation and crossover operators. To expand the study, three load conditions have been considered, i.e., constant, varying and effective loads. Objective function is introduced for the load conditions. The annual cost is fitness of problem, in addition to this cost, CPU time, voltage profile, active power loss and total installed capacitor banks and their related costs have been used for comparisons. To confirm the ability of each improvements of SaDE, the improvements are studied both in separate and simultaneous conditions. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, it is tested on IEEE 10-bus and 34-bus radial distribution networks and compared with other approaches.
With the development of industry and the improvement of living standards, better quality in power electric service is required more than ever before. This paper deals with the optimal algorithms for voltage regulation in the case where Distributed Storage and Generation (DSG) systems are operated in distribution systems. It is very difficult to handle the interconnection issues for proper voltage managements, because the randomness of the load variations and the irregular operation of DSG should be considered. This paper proposes the optimal on-line real time voltage regulation methods in power distribution systems interconnected with the DSG systems. In order to deliver suitable voltage to as many customers as possible, the optimal sending voltage should be decided by the effective voltage regulation method by using artificial neural networks to consider the rapid load variation and random operation characteristics of DSG systems. The simulation results from a case study show that the proposed method can be a practical tool for the voltage regulation in distribution systems including many DSG systems.

When load areas on a feeder are deenergized due to faults and scheduled outage, operators need to identify neighboring feeders, try to restore customers and minimize out-of-service areas. These cases include knowledge of system states and various constraints such as voltage drop. This paper concerns the load transfer in fault restoration and scheduled outage. Also, the operating constraints such as line current capacity, relay trip current, transformer capacity, voltage drop and line loss are considered. This expert system can propose the optimal load transfer method by analyzing the system state and considering the constraints.
This paper presents an algorithm for Optimal Reactive Power Dispatch(ORPD) problem based on genetic algorithm. Optimal reactive power dispatch is particularized to the minimization of transmission line losses by suitable selection of generator reactive power outputs and transformer tap settings. To reduce system loss and improve voltage profile, two methods, Loss Re-Distribution Algorithm (LRDA) and Voltage Dependent Load Model (VDLM), are applied to ORPD. The proposed methods have been evaluated on the IEEE 30 bus system. Each of results have been compared with result of load flow.
The authors have developed a solution method based on the incremental algorithm. The optimal load balance between feeders is found through the incremental algorithm with allowing the loop configuration. Therefore loops can be configured in the resulting configuration, and then we must eliminate all loops to satisfy radiality of distribution system because the distribution system is operated under radial status. But the optimal load balance through incremental algorithm is deteriorated when the loops are eliminated. In this paper, authors propose a new method which is to improve the searching procedure of path in the incremental algorithm, that is, so as not to make loop in the path configuration.

In this study, a seismic design methodology for friction dampers based on the story shear force distribution of an elastic building structure is proposed. First, using two normalization methods for the slip-load of a friction damper, numerical analyses of various single-degree-of-freedom systems are peformed. From those analyses, the effect of the slip-load and the brace stiffness was investigated and the optimal silliness ratio of the brace versus original structure was found. Second, from the numerical analysis for five multi-story building structures with different natural frequency and the number of story, reasonable decision method for the total number of installation floor, location of installation and distribution of the slip-loads are drawn. In addition, an empirical equation on the optimal number of installation floor is proposed. Finally, the superiority of the proposed method compared to the existing design method is verified from the numerical analysis using real earthquake data.
Recently, the operation of power distribution systems has become more difficult because the peak demand load is increasing continuously and the daily load factor is getting worse and worse. Also, the consideration of deregulation and global environment in electric power industry is required. In order to overcome these problems, a study on the planning and operation in distribution systems of dispersed generating sources such as fuel cell systems, photovoltaic systems and wind power systems has been performed energetically. This study presents a method for determining an optimal operation strategy of dispersed co-generating sources, especially fuel cell systems, in the case of both only electric power supply and thermal supply as well as electric power supply. In other words, the optimal operation of these sources can be determined easily by the principle of equal incremental fuel cost and the thermal merits is evaluated quantitatively through Kuhn-Tucker's optimal conditions. In order to select the optimal locations of those sources, an priority method using the comparison of total cost at the peak load time interval is also presented. The validity of the proposed algorithms is demonstrated using a model system.
Uncoordinated charging of large-scale electric vehicles (EVs) will have a negative impact on the secure and economic operation of the power system, especially at the distribution level. Given that the charging load of EVs can be controlled to some extent, research on the optimal charging control of EVs has been extensively carried out. In this paper, two possible smart charging scenarios in China are studied: centralized optimal charging operated by an aggregator and decentralized optimal charging managed by individual users. Under the assumption that the aggregators and individual users only concern the economic benefits, new load peaks will arise under time of use (TOU) pricing which is extensively employed in China. To solve this problem, a simple incentive mechanism is proposed for centralized optimal charging while a rolling-update pricing scheme is devised for decentralized optimal charging. The original optimal charging models are modified to account for the developed schemes. Simulated tests corroborate the efficacy of optimal scheduling for charging EVs in various scenarios.

Recently, the needs and concerns for the power loss are increasing according to the energy conservation at the level of the national policies and power utilities's business strategies. Especially, the issue of the power loss is the main factor for the determining the electric pricing rates in the circumstances of the deregulation of electrical industry. However, because of the lacking of management for power loss load factors (LLF), it is difficult to make a calculation for the power loss and to make a decision for the electric rates. And loss factor(k-factor), which is a most important factor for calculation of the distribution power loss, has been used as a fixed value of 0.32 since the fiscal year 1973. Therefore, This study presents the statistical calculation methods of the loss factors classified by load types and seasons by using the practical data of 65 primary feeders which are selected by proper procedures. Based on the above the algorithms and methods, the optimal method of the distribution loss management classified by facilities such as primary feeders, distribution transformers and secondary feeders is presented. The simulation results show the effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed methods.

In this paper, the design of thick laminated composite plate subjected to thermal buckling load under uniform temperature distribution is presented. In the design procedures of composite laminated plates for maximum thermal buckling load. the finite element method based on shear deformed theory is used for the analysis or laminated plates. One-demensional search method is used to find optimal fiber orientation and, in the next step, optimal thickness is investigated. Design variables such as fiber orientation and ply thicknesses coefficient of plates are adopted. The optimal design for the symmetric or antisymmetric laminated plates consisted of 4 layers with maximum thermal buckling load is performed.
