  • Magnetic Suspension and Balance System (MSBS) demonstrates the capacity to levitate an experimental model absent any mechanical contact using magnetic forces and moments. It allows precise control of position and attitude of the model, and measures external forces and moments acting on the model. For the purpose of acquisition of reliable experimental results under stable and safe conditions, the performance and robustness of the position and attitude control system of MSBS needs to be improved. To this end, Iterative Feedback Tuning (IFT) and L1 adaptive output feedback algorithm were employed to automatically increase command following performance and to ensure robust operation of MSBS with failure of electric power supply. The applicability was validated using computational simulation.

  • In this paper, we studied the Bartlett method to correctly estimate the targets of a unmanned vehicles. The Bartlett method estimates the desired signals by making the gain constant for the received signal incident on the array antenna. In this paper, the weights of the Bartlett method are updated by applying the winner method and steepest descent method in order to estimation the accurate unmanned. The updated weights improve the resolution of the existing Bartlett method by applying optimal weights to all received signals received at the array antenna. Through simulation, we are comparative analysis about the performance of proposed method. From result of simulation, We showed the superior performance of the proposed method relative to the classical method, and Bartlett using steep descent method showed more superior than one using wiener method.

  • Using COMSAT which provides multi-beam switching function, the optimal transmission channel environment which provides the high data rate communication are proposed in this paper. Also the link budget for communication transponder of COMSAT is designed. Based on the channel modeling for group delay, non-linear and gain flatness characteristics, the system performances which provide various data rate services were analyzed in Ka-band satellite channel. As the transmission data rate is increased, the degradation due to these channel characteristics is severely increased. The linear component of group delay and the AM-AM component of non-linear characteristics severely affect the system performance. To efficiently provide the various service via the same transmission system it is necessary to equalize the primary impairment factors. The optimum operating points of HDR satellite transmission system are implemented and operated by considering the analyzed results on channel characteristics.

  • This paper provides a rigorous theory for analysis of quantization effects and optimum filter bank design in quantized multidimensional subband filter banks. Even though subband filter design has been a hot topic for last decades, a few results have been reported on the subband filter with a quantizer. Each pdf-optimized quantizer is modeled by a nonlinear gain-plus-additive uncorrelated noise and embedded into the subband structure. Using polyphase decomposition of the analysis/synthesis filter banks, we derive the exact expression for the output mean square quantization error. Based on the minimization of the output mean square error, the technique for optimal filter design methodology is developed. Numerical design examples for optimum nonseparable paraunitary and biorthogonal filter banks are presented with a quincunx subsampling lattice. Through the simulation, $10\~20\;\%$ decreases in MSE have been observed compared with subband filter with no quantizers especially for low bit rate cases.

  • A very low complexity QRD-M algorithm based on limited search area is proposed for MIMO systems. The conventional QRD-M algorithm calculates Euclidean distance between all constellation symbols and the temporary detection symbol at each layer. We found that performance will not be degraded even if we adaptively restrict the search area of the candidate symbols only to the neighboring points of temporary detection symbol according to the channel condition at each layer. As a channel condition indicator, we employ the channel gain ratio among the layers without necessity of SNR estimation. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme effectively achieves near optimal performance while maintaining the overall average computation complexity much smaller than the conventional QRD-M algorithm.

  • Covertness and performance are very important design goals in the underwater communications. To satisfy both of them, we proposed efficient underwater communication model which combined multiband and direct sequence spread spectrum method in order to improve performance and covertness simultaneously. Turbo coding method with 1/3 coding rates is used for channel coding algorithm, and turbo equalization method which iterately exchange probabilistic information between equalizer and decoder is used for receiver side. After optimal threshold value was set in Rake processing, this paper analyzed the performance by varying the number of chips were 8, 16, 32 and the number of bands were from 1 to 4. Through the simulation results, we confirmed that the performance improvement was obtained by increasing the number of bands and chips. 2~3 dB of performance gain was obtained when the number of chips were increased in same number of bands.

  • In this paper, a design method for a compact CPW-fed slot antenna using SRRs is studied. The structure of the proposed slot antenna is a rectangular slot antenna loaded with SRR conductors inside the slot to reduce the antenna size. Optimal design parameters are obtained by analyzing the effects of the gap between the SRR conductors and slot, and the width of the SRR conductors on the input VSWR characteristic. The optimized compact slot antenna operating at 2.45 GHz band is fabricated on an FR4 substrate with a dimension of 36 mm by 30 mm. The length of the proposed compact slot antenna is reduced to 14.3% compared to that of a conventional rectangular slot antenna. Experiment results show that the antenna has a desired impedance characteristic with a frequency band of 2.4-2.49 GHz for a VSWR < 2, and measured gain of 2.3 dBi at 2.45 GHz.

  • In this paper, a PID controller with interpolated gains by use of neural networks is proposed for the formation control problem that following robots track a leading robot with constant distances and angles when there are changes in the mass of the following robot. The whole control system is composed of a kinematic controller and a dynamic controller considering the robot dynamics. The dynamic controller is the PID controller with varying gains, and the proper gains are obtained for some representative masses of the follower robot by the genetic algorithm. Neural networks is trained using the genetic algorithm with the gain data obtained in the previous step. The trained neural network determines optimal PID gains for a random mass of following robot. Simulation studies show that for arbitrary masses of the tracking robot, the PID controller with interpolated gains by the trained neural network has better tracking performance than that of the PID controller with fixed gains.

  • In this paper, a design method for a CPW-fed wideband loop antenna for indoor digital TV applications is studied. The proposed loop antenna consists of a square loop and two circular sectors which connect the loop with central feed points, and the CPW feed line is inserted in the lower circular sector. The CPW feed line is designed to match with the 75 ohm port impedance for DTV applications, and the ground slots are etched in order to improve the impedance matching in the middle frequency region. The effects of the gap between the circular sectors and the location and dimension of the ground slots on the input reflection coefficient and gain characteristics are examined to obtain the optimal design parameters. The optimized antenna is fabricated on FR4 substrate, and the experiment results show that it operates in the frequency band of 463-1,280 MHz for a VSWR < 2, which assures the operation in the DTV band.

  • In this paper, a design method for a CPW-fed slot antenna for harmonic suppression is studied. The structure of the proposed slot antenna is a rectangular slot antenna appended with stepped impedance resonators (SIRs) at both ends of the slot symmetrically. Optimal design parameters are obtained by analyzing the effects of the length and width of the SIRs on the input reflection coefficient. The optimized harmonic-suppressed slot antenna operating at 2.45 GHz WLAN band is fabricated on an FR4 substrate with a dimension of 42 mm by 30 mm. The slot length of the proposed harmonic-suppressed slot antenna is reduced to 33.3% compared to that of a conventional rectangular slot antenna owing to the appended SIRs. Experiment results show that the antenna has a desired impedance characteristic with a frequency band of 2.39-2.49 GHz for a VSWR < 2, and a measured gain of 2.5 dBi at 2.45 GHz.
