  • In this paper, for the fuzzy-reaching law method which has the characteristic of elimination of chattering at sliding mode as well as the characteristic of fast response at the design of variable structure controller with reaching law, optimal solutions for the determination of parameters of fuzzy membership functions by using genetic algorithm are proposed. Generally, the design of fuzzy controller has difficulties in determining the parameters of fuzzy membership functions by using a tedious trial-and-error process. To overcome these difficulties, this paper develops genetic algorithm of an optimal searching method based on genetic operation, and to verify the validity of this proposed method it is simulated through 2 link robot manipulator.

  • This paper proposes a novel controller design scheme for multimachine power systems based on the explorized policy iteration. Power systems have several uncertainties on system dynamics due to the various effects of interconnections between generators. To solve this problem, the proposed method solves the LQR (Linear Quadratic Regulation) problem of isolated subsystems without the knowledge of a system matrix and the interconnection parameters of multimachine power systems. By selecting the proper performance indices, it guarantees the stability and convergence of the LQ optimal control. To implement the proposed scheme, the least squares based online method is also investigated in terms of PE (Persistency of Excitation), interconnection parameters and exploration signals. Finally, the performance and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm are demonstrated by numerical simulations of three-machine power systems with governor controllers.

  • Reactor control is a standout amongst the most vital issues in the nuclear power plant. In this paper, the optimal design of variable structure controller (VSC) based on the lightning search algorithm (LSA) is proposed for a nuclear reactor power system. The LSA is a new optimization algorithm. It is used to find the optimal parameters of the VSC instead of the trial and error method or experts of the designer. The proposed algorithm is used for the tuning of the feedback gains and the sliding equation gains of the VSC to prove a good performance. Furthermore, the parameters of the VSC are tuned by the genetic algorithm (GA). Simulation tests are carried out to verify the performance and robustness of the proposed LSA-based VSC compared with GA-based VSC. The results prove the high performance and the superiority of VSC based on LSA compared with VSC based on GA.

  • This paper describes the optimal PSS parameter design for the PSS of EX2000 excitation system. The suggested tuning technique uses the model-based PSS tuning method which have three steps: generation system modeling, determination of PSS parameters, and on-site test. Using this method, the PSS parameters of EX2000 system in Dangjin T/P #4 was designed and verified by linear analysis program, PSS/E, and EMTDC/PSCAD.

  • Lactic acid production parameter optimization using Lactobacillus amylovorus NRRL B-4542 was performed using the design of experiments (DOE) available in the form of an orthogonal array and a software for automatic design and analysis of the experiments, both based on Taguchi protocol. Optimal levels of physical parameters and key media components namely temperature, pH, inoculum size, moisture, yeast extract, $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_20$, Tween 80, and corn steep liquor (CSL) were determined. Among the physical parameters, temperature contributed higher influence, and among media components, yeast extract, $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_20$, and Tween 80 played important roles in the conversion of starch to lactic acid. The expected yield of lactic acid under these optimal conditions was 95.80% and the actual yield at optimum conditions was 93.50%.

  • The form accuracy of parts has become an important parameter. Therefore, dimensional tolerance and geometric tolerance are used in the design stage to satisfy required quality and functions of parts. But the informations on the machining conditions, which can satisfy the assigned geometric tolerance in design, are insufficient. The objectives of this research are to study the effects of the grinding parameters such as traverse speed, work speed, depth of cut, and dwell time on the after-ground workpiece shape, and to find out the major parameters among them. The results are as follows, The effects of work speed and depth of cut on workpiece shape are negligible compared with the effect of traverse speed. There is an optimal dwell time depending on the traverse speed. The optimal dwell time is decreasing as the traverse speed is increased.

  • Multi-objective optimization was conducted to obtain the optimal configuration of a composite sandwich structure with honeycomb-foam hybrid core subjected to underwater shock waves, which can fulfill the demand for light weight and energy efficient design of structures against underwater blast. Effects of structural parameters on the dynamic response of the sandwich structures subjected to underwater shock waves were analyzed numerically, from which the correlations of different parameters to the dynamic response were determined. Multi-objective optimization of the structure subjected to underwater shock waves of which the initial pressure is 30 MPa was conducted based on surrogate modelling method and genetic algorithm. Moreover, optimization results of the sandwich structure subjected to underwater shock waves with different initial pressures were compared. The research can guide the optimal design of composite sandwich structures subjected to underwater shock waves.

  • Taguchi's parameter design is to determine optimal settings of design parameters of a product or a process such that the characteristics of a product exhibit small variabilities around their target values. His analysis of the problem has focused only on a single characteristic or response, but the quality of most products is seldom defined by a characteristic, and is rather the composite of a great number of characteristics which are often interrelated and nearly always measured in a variety of units. The critical problem in dealing with multiple characteristics is how to compromise the conflicts among the selected levels of the design parameters for each individual characteristic. In this paper, the EXTOPSIS Model using SN ratio which can be optimized by univariate technique is proposed and a parameter design procedure to achieve the optimal compromise among several different response variables is developed. Two existing case studies are solved by the proposed method and the results are compared with ones by the sum of SN ratios, the expected weighted loss, and the desirability function.

  • In-mold Coating is a method that can simultaneously perform injection molding and surface coating in injection mold. The material used for coating is two-component polyurethane which is composed of polyol and isocyanate. L-type mixing head can be used to mix polyol and isocyanate uniformly, and inject them inside the mold cavity. The surface quality of the injection molded products by using in-mold coating depends on the mixing uniformity between main agent and hardener. In this study, flow analysis was performed to design a mixing head for uniform mixing of two-component polyurethane. Especially the effects of design parameters of mixing head on mixing uniformity and nozzle pressure were investigated. The parameters of mixing head were mixing chamber diameter, cleaning cylinder diameter, nozzle alignment angle in the horizontal and vertical direction, and cleaning piston position. It was found that optimal design values were mixing chamber diameter of 3.5 mm, cleaning cylinder diameter of 5.0 mm, nozzle horizontal/vertical alignment angles of 140°/160°, and cleaning piston position of 1.8 mm. The optimal values would be used to develop a two-component mixing head achieving an uniform mixing for in-mold coating.
