  • The structure of satellite was of six parts of control system, power system, thermal control system, remote measurement command system, propellant system and thrust system. In these parts, propellant system consists of propellant tank and thrust device. What we want to perform is optimum design to minimaize the weight of propellant tank. In order to design optimal propellant tank, several parameters should be adopted form the tank geometry like the relative location of the lug and variation of the wall thickness. So the analysis was executed by finite element analysis for finding optimal design parameters. The structure was devided into 3 parts, the initial thickness zone, the transitional zone, and the weak zone,whose effects on the pressure vessel strength was investigated. Finally the optimal lug location and the three zone thickness were obtained and the weight was compared with the uniform thickness vessel.

  • Nowadays, one of the serious problems in KEPCO system is large fault current which exceeds the SCC(Short Circuit Capacity) of circuit breaker, As the superconductivity technology has been developed, the HTS-FCL(High Temperature Superconductor-Fault Current Limiter) can be one of the attractive alternatives to solve the fault current problem. However, the parameters of HTS-FCL should be designed optimally to have a best performance. Under this background, this paper presents the optimal design method of parameters for resistive type HTS-FCL using stochastic analysis technique.

  • The hydraulic fuse, which responds to the suddenly increased flow on rupture of a line and shuts off the fluid flow, would prevent large spillage of liquid. The quick-acting hydraulic fuse, which is mainly composed of a poppet, a seat, and a spring, must be designed to minimize the leaked flow and to prevent high collision speed between the poppet and seat during fuse operation on a line rupture. The optimal design parameters of a quick-acting hydraulic fuse were searched using the genetic algorithm and the complex method that are kinds of constrained direct search methods. The dynamic behavior of a quick-acting hydraulic fuse was researched using computer simulations that applied the obtained optimal design parameters.

  • The topology of LLC half bridge resonant converter provides ZVS characteristic. The voltage stress and current stress are smaller than that of the general resonant converters. So the LLC HB resonant converter can be considered as a optimal circuit for the notebook computer adapter. In the adapter design, we should consider the weight, the size and the overheat of the adapter. Thus the higher efficiency is an essential particular. First of all, the optimal design of transformer is the most important facts. Some parameters should be considered in order to get the highest efficiency. The adapter is designed through the considering of these parameters including the PFC circuit as the pre-regulator. It converts AC line input into about DC 390V link voltage of the LLC HB converter input and the converter has 16V/90W ratings. The efficiency measured is about up to 93%.

  • Recently, the amount of spring usage is on the increase in the automotive and aircraft parts industries as well as home appliances. Manufacture of spring reflects a need for diversification, mass production and high precision. Therefore it is very important to know the bending method and forming technique according to the shape of spring. In this study, to find the optimal bending method for the motor spring, the FE-simulation was executed using orthogonal array. The design parameters are wire length, length of vibration and feed rate. Then, the optimal combination of design parameters was suggested using ANN technique.

  • Rigid plate elastically supported at the edges is modeled and the performance of the optimal vibration control under sinusoidal excitation is tested. The controller based on the linear quadratic regulator with output feedback is designed to control the multi-degree of freedom vibration. Relative weighting parameters are considered as design constraints to determine the limitation of maximum control force and state parameters. Control force calculated by proportional output feedback of the displacement and velocity is used to suppress the vibration induced by the sinusoidal external force. The active vibration control of vibrating plate by the LQR controller is examined through the numerical simulations that show the effectiveness of optimal control scheme on the three degrees of freedom structure.

  • In this study, dynamic optimal design far a two degree-of-freedom anthropomorphic robot module is performed. Several dynamic design indices associated with the inertia matrix and the inertia power array are introduced. Analysis for the relationship between the dynamic parameters and the design indices shows that trade-offs exist between the isotropy and the dynamic design indices related to the actuator size. A composite design index is employed to deal with multi-criteria based design with different weighting factors, in a systematic manner. We demonstrate the fact that dynamic optimization is another significant step to enhance the system performances, followed by kinematic optimization.

Shape Design of Frame Structures for Vibration Suppression and Weight Reduction

  • This paper proposes shape design of frame structures for vibration suppression and weight reduction. The $H_{\infty}$ norm of the transfer function from disturbance sources to the output points where vibration should be suppressed, is adopted as the performance index to represent the magnitude of vibration transfer. The design parameters are the node positions of the frame structure, on which constraints are imposed so that the structure achieves given tasks. For computation of Pareto optimal solutions to the two-objective design problem, a number of linear combinations of the $H_{\infty}$ norm and the total weight of the structure are considered and minimized. For minimization of the scalared objective function, a Lagrange function is defined by the objective function and the imposed constraints on the design parameters. The solution for which the Lagrange function satisfies the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker condition, is searched by the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

Optimum shape and process design of single rotor equipment for its mixing performance using finite volume method

  • We numerically analyzed flow characteristics of the polymer melt in the screw equipment using a proper modeling and investigated design parameters which have influence on the mixing performance as the capability of the screw equipment. We considered the non-Newtonian and non-isothermal flow in a single rotor equipment to investigate the mixing performance with respect to screw dimensions as shape parameter of the single rotor equipment and screw speed as process parameter. We used Bird-Carreau-Yasuda model as a viscous model of the polymer melt and the particle tracking method to investigate the mixing performance in the screw equipment and considered four mixing performance indexes: residence time distribution, deformation rate, total strain and particle standard deviation as a new mixing performance index. We compared these indexes to determine design parameters and object function. On basis of the analysis results, we carried out the optimal design by using the response surface method and design of experiments. In conclusion, the differences of results between the optimal value and numerical analysis are about 5.0%.

  • This paper explores an optimal design methodology for an auto lever using a genetic algorithm. Components of the auto lever have been designed sequentially in the industry, but this study presents a novel design method to determine the design parameters of components simultaneously. The genetic algorithm approach is described to decide a set of design parameters for auto lever. The authors have attempted to model the design problem with the objective of minimizing the angle variation of detent spring subject to constraints such as modulus of elasticity of steel, geometry of shift pipe, and stiffness of spring. This method gives the promising design alternative.
