  • We present numerically simulated results on stabilities of optical soliton transmission in highly-dispersion-perturbed optical fiber systems. We have found that the perturbation of dispersion along the transmission line does not significantly degrade stability of soliton transmission as long as the average soliton concept is obeyed.

  • We study numerically the temporal evolutions of two orthogonally polarized pulses with width less than 100fsec in all-optical phase-shift switches. We analyze the complicated interplay between a soliton pulse and a higher-order soliton pulse, including the self-and the cross-Raman scattering and the walk-off effect. We also investigate the influence of these interactions on switching performance, including pulse-shape, phase-shift distribution, and contrast ratio. In particular we show that an optical fiber with a typical birefringence (Δn : 2.4$\times$10$^{-5}$ ) can be used with good switching performance in such all-optical switches.

  • In optical soliton transmission systems with nonlinear dispersive materials, which is utilized for ultra-long and high bit rate transmission, it is shown that the value of initial time difference between adjacent solitons is analyzed for optimum bit rate. The method is inducted by uncorrelation condition with minimum interaction forces in initial covariance coefficient between adjacent solitons. When the initial time difference is 6 times of soliton pulse width by the results, it is shown that the reliability is maintained with more than 90% within transmission length of soliton period. multiplied by 93.

  • In the soliton transmission system for a long-length and high bit rate data transmission systme using the nonlinear/dispersive optical fibers, the improtant problem is the loss characteristics and is the limited transmission rate by interaction forces. In this paper, It is explained the reasons of moved time position for the soliton peak value due to interaction force sof adjacent solitons. And for the analysis of interaction force affection level in the losslessmedia, we define the percent parameter of error rate due to the interaction forces and propose the optimum time distance of adjacent solitons by peak value tracking methods. With the results, initial percent of error is approximately 50% when itme difference between adjacent solitons is 5 times of funddametnal soliton pulse width. And it is confirmed that maximum transmission length of th esolitons is approximately 38 times of fundamental soliton period, which the maximum allowable percoent of error is 50%.

  • The performance improvement of 40Gbit/s soliton transmission system employing nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) as all-optical regenerative repeater is investigated. The switching characteristic of NOLM is optimized using our design strategies. By inserting the optical repeater where the eye-penalty of the transmitted signal becomes 1 ㏈, we achieve the improvement of 0.3㏈ eye-penalty resulting in further 480km transmission distance.

  • A numerical analysis based on the nonlinear Schroedinger equation is presented to analyze the propagation stability of the average soliton in a simple nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. The ratio of amplification period to soliton period and the length fraction of the erbium-doped fiber in the loop are varied to investigate their effects on the soliton stability. It is observed that stable soliton propagation is obtained even when the amplification period is only slightly shorter than the soliton period when the length fraction of the erbium-doped fiber in the loop is small, which is different from the previously published condition for stable average soliton propagation.

  • Utilizing self-phase modulation effects of a dispersion-shifted fiber and delay-line characteristics of two gratings, mode-locked 80 ps pulses at 1.319${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ wavelength from a Nd: YAG laser are compressed down to 2.1 ps. These pulses are further compressed down to 340 fs using higher order soliton effects in a common single mode fiber.

  • We numerically solve the nonlinear Schrödinger equation for pulse propagation in a passively mode-locked Yb:KGW laser. The soliton-like pulse formation as a result of balanced negative group-delay dispersion (GDD) and nonlinear self-phase modulation is analyzed. The cavity design and optical parameters of a previously reported high-power Yb:KGW laser were adopted to compare the simulation results with experimental results. The pulse duration and energy obtained by varying the small-signal gain or GDD reproduce the overall tendency observed in the experiments, demonstrating the reliability and accuracy of the model simulation and the optical parameters.

  • We numerically investigate a stable propagation regime of soliton pulse trains in fibers with periodically copensated loss by lumped optical amplifiers. When amplification solition pulses is 1.2~1.5 and the minimum soliton separation normalized by the soliton width becomes about 6. In cases of L=50[km], the allowable range of A is 1.5~1.7 under =6. The maximum allowable variation of the loss compensation in each lumped amplifier becomes +-2% of the fiber loss when L=50[km], A=1.6, and =6. Generally, the allowable rages of the soliton amplitude A and amplifier gain are inversely proportional to the amplification period L.

  • In this paper, we studied the characteristics of a soliton coupler using a bent nonlinear waveguide. The bent soliton coupler has very ,harp switching characteristic like the conventional soliton coupler due to the threshold effect of soliton emi, sion from the nonlinear waveguide. By using the bent structure, we can reduce the threshold power for the soliton emission. We consider the saturation effect of nonlinearity and the loss in the medium for more accurate and practical numerical analysis in wave propagation through the bent soliton coupler. The simulation results show that the consideration of the saturation effect and the ]os~ may be very important in the analyses and design of the nonlinear waveguide devices. The bent structure is useful for the emission of the spatial soliton with the low threshold power, when we consider the saturation and the loss effect. ffect.
