Errors resulting from magnification variations of optical system are largely generated in three-dimensional shape measurements. In the case of measuring the surface morphology of tiny objects based on DFF, images are acquired with a very small interval and then magnification changes are minimized. However, the magnification variations are actually existed in optical system and so focus measures in DFF are wrongly or ambiguously extracted. in this paper, a methodology based on DFF with the magnification changes is proposed to make more accurate measurement in surface morphology with high depth discontinuity, compared with previous ones. Several experiments show that the proposed method outperforms existing ones without magnification changes.

Background Microsurgical techniques are considered standard procedures in reconstructive surgery. Although microsurgery by itself is defined as surgery aided by optical magnification, there are no guidelines for determining in which clinical situations a microscope or loupe should be used. Therefore, we conducted standardized experiments to objectively assess the impact of optical magnification in microsurgery. Methods Sixteen participants of microsurgical training courses had to complete 2 sets of experiments. Each set had to be performed with an unaided eye, surgical loupes, and a regular operating microscope. The first set of experiments included coaptation of a chicken femoral nerve, and the second set consisted of anastomosing porcine coronary arteries. Evaluation of the sutured nerves and vessels were performed by 2 experienced microsurgeons using an operating microscope. Results The 16 participants of the study completed all of the experiments. The nerve coaptation and vascular anastomoses exercises showed a direct relationship of error frequency and lower optical magnification, meaning that the highest number of microsurgical errors occurred with the unaided eye. For nerve coaptation, there was a strong relationship (P<0.05) between the number of mistakes and magnification, and this relationship was very strong (P<0.01) for vascular anastomoses. Conclusions We were able to prove that microsurgical success is directly related to optical magnification. The human eye's ability to discriminate potentially important anatomical structures is limited, which might be detrimental for clinical results. Although not legally mandatory, surgeries such as reparative surgery after hand trauma should be conducted with magnifying devices for achieving optimal patient outcomes.
Microscopy has enabled the development of many advanced technologies, and higher level microscopic techniques are required according to the increase of research in nano-technology and bio-technology fields. Therefore, in many applications, we need to measure the dimension of micro-scale parts accurately, not just to observe their shapes. To establish the meter-traceability in microscopy, gratings have been widely used as a magnification standard. KRISS provides the certification service of magnification standards using an optical diffractometer and a metrological AFM (MAFM). They are based on different measurement principles, and so can give complementary information for each other. In this paper, we describe the configuration of each system and measurement procedures to certificate grating pitch values of magnification standards. Several measurement results are presented, and the discussion about them are also given. Using the optical diffractometer, we can calibrate a grating specimen with uncertainty of less than 50 pm. The MAFM can measure a grating specimen of down to 100 nm pitch value, and the calibrated values usually have uncertainty less than 500 pm.
A method to determine the transverse magnification (TM) of an imaging system is discussed. This method is different in that TM can be determined accurately by using distortion analysis. We demonstrate the validity of the method via numerical simulation with accompanying experimental data for a thick bi-convex lens.
We propose and experimentally demonstrate an all-optical radio frequency (RF) spectrum broadening system based on time compression. By utilizing the procedure of dispersion compensation values, the frequency domain is broadened by compressing the linear chirp optical pulse which has been multiplexed by the radio frequency. A detailed mathematical description elucidates that the time compression is a very preferred scheme for spectrum broadening. We also report experimental results to prove this method, magnification factor at 2.7, 8 and 11 have been tested with different dispersion values of fiber, the experimental results agree well with the theoretical results. The proposed system is flexible and the magnification factor is determined by the dispersion values, the proposed scheme is a linear system. In addition, the influence of key parameters, for instance optical bandwidth and the sideband suppression ratio (SSR), are discussed. Magnification factor 11 of the proposed system is demonstrated.
Errors resulting from magnification variations of a optical system are largely generated in three-dimensional shape measurements based on depth-from-focus. In the case of measuring the surface morphology of tiny objects based on DFF, images are acquired with a very small interval so that magnification changes can be minimized. However, the magnification variations are actually existed in the acquired images and so focus measures are wrongly or ambiguously extracted. In this paper, a methodology with linear magnification calibrations, based on DFF, is proposed to make more accurate measurement in surface morphology with high depth discontinuity, compared with previous ones. Several experiments show that the proposed method outperforms existing ones without magnification calibrations.
An off-axis system refers to an optical system in which the optical axis and normal vector at the vertex of each surface do not match. The most important specification in an optical system is its focal length. Among the various methods for measuring the focal length, the most suitable method for the off-axis system is the method that adopts magnification. However, head-mounted display (HMD) optics must be measured while considering the virtual image distance, which is not infinity owing to product characteristics. For the virtual image distance, a camera with a focusing function was used. By measuring HMD optics via this magnification method, the error generated in this measurement was 0.68% of the HMD's focal length, which is within the 1%-3% range of the conventionally permitted design error for the focal length allowed at the optical design stage. Therefore, it can be verified that the measurement accuracy of the method proposed in this study is sufficiently feasible in practice.
