  • Laser surface treatment technologies have been used to improve characteristics of wear and to enhance the fatigue resistance for mold parts. The optical lens with the elliptical profile is designed to obtain a wide surface hardening area with a uniform hardness. The objective of this research work is to investigate the influence of the process parameters, such as power of laser and defocused spot position, on the characteristics of laser surface treatment for the case of SKD61 steel and SCM4 steel. From the results of the experiments, it has been shown that the maximum average hardness is approximatly 700${\sim}$780 Hv when the power, focal position and the travel of laser are 1,095 W, 0mm and 0.3 m/min, respectively. In samples treated with lower scanning speeds, some small carbide particles appear in the interdendritic regions. This region contains fine martensite and carbide in proportions which depend on the local thermal cycle.

  • This work was carried out to investigate the welding behavior of thin A3003 Al alloy sheets by Nd : YAG laser beam. Considering bead shape and mechanical properties, the laser pulse shapes selected were two kinds of 2-division and 3-division by varying power level and pulse duration. In order to obtain optimum conditions, the factorial design method and central composite design method were applied. Tensile test, optical microscopy, micro hardness test and TEM analysis were performed. Due to the annealing caused by thermal effect during laser welding, precipitates were coarsended. The HAZ was softened and failed during tensile test. The hardness of HAZ was lower than that of base metal, since the heat input relieved the work hardening effect and caused grain growth.

  • Micro-stereolithography technology has made it possible to fabricate any form of three-dimensional microstructures. It makes a 3D structure by dividing the shape into many slices of relevant thickness along horizontal surface, hardening each layer of slice with a laser, and stacking them up to a desired shape. Until now, however, the micro-stereolithography device was not designed systematically because the key factors governing the device were not considered. In this paper, we designed micro-stereolithography device using axiomatic approach. This paper contains an overview and an analysis of a new proposed system for development of micro-stereolithegraphy device, and detailed descriptions of the activities in this system. The newly designed system offers reduced machine size by minimizing of optical components and decoupled design matrix.

  • (Mo.W)Si$_2$ composites were fabricated by vacuum hot-pressing elemental Mo, W and Si powders at various temperatures. Elemental Mo, W and Si powders were alloyed in the proper proportions to form solid solutions. The microstructure and properties of these materials was characterized by using x-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and Vicker's technique. It was found that tungsten was mainly substituted for Mo atoms, and made a completed solid solution of (Mo.W)Si$_2$ over 1$600^{\circ}C$. The lattice parameters and Vickers hardness increased largely with increasing reaction temperature by the most soluble elements, due to the solid-solution hardening.

  • The mechanical properties and optical micrographs are studied for rolled magnesium alloy sheet with hexagonal close packed structure(HCP) at room and elevated temperatures. Tensile properties such as tensile strength, elongation, R-value and n-value are also measured for AZ31 magnesium alloy. Magnesium with strong texture of basal plane parallel to the rolling direction usually has high R-value and plastic anisotropy at room temperature. As temperature increases, the R-value for AZ31 magnesium sheet decreases. In addition, the AZ31 sheet becomes isotropy and recrystallization above $200^{\circ}C$. Formability of magnesium alloy sheets remarkably poor at room temperature is improved by increasing temperature. Sheet forming of magnesium alloy is practically possible only at high temperature range where plastic anisotropy disappears.

  • The mechanical properties of Ti-Al intermetallic compounds which contain Mn, Zr, or Cr as the third element have been evaluated by means of hardness and compression tests. Microstructures have also been examined using an optical microscope. The cast structures of Ti-Al alloys are coarsened and the lamellar volume fraction is increased by the additions of Mn or V, but the cast structures are refined by the addition of Zr. Hardness tests of room temperature and compression tests at $600^{\circ}C$ showed that the mechanical properties of Ti-Al alloys were mainly dependent on the volume fraction of the ${\alpha}_2$ phase, grain size and solid solution hardening. However according to the compression test at $1000^{\circ}C$, the yield strength of Ti-Al alloys decreased with an increase in Mn or Cr content, but increased with an increase in the Zr content.

  • SiC particles reinforced Mg-Zr, Mg-Zn and Mg-Zn-Zr composites were manufactured by Rheocompocasting method. Effects of Zn, Zr addition on microstructures and hardness were investigated by using the micro Vickers hardness tester, the optical and scanning electron microscopy. By the Zr addition to the pureMg/SiCp composites, SiC particles become more homogeneously dispersed and grain refined so that the micro hardness of the composite increased. In case of Zn addition, although grain refinement and homogeneous dispersion effects of SiC particles were not obtained, hardness was more increased than the only Zr added composite by the formation of many Mg-Zn intermetallic compounds at grain boundary. In the Mg-Zn-Zr/SiCp composite, the highest value of hardness was obtained by triple effects such as grain refining, dispersion hardening of SiC particles and Mg-Zn compounds.

  • Micro-stereolithography is a newly proposed technology as a means that can fabricate 3D micro-structures of free form. It makes a 3D structure by dividing the shape into many slices of relevant thickness along honzontal surfaces, hardening each layer of slice with a laser, and stacking them up to a des~red shape. Scale effect becomes important in this micro-fabrication process, d~fferently from the conventional stereolithography. To realize this micro-stereolithography technology, we developed an equipment using Ar+ laser, xyz stages, controllers and all the optic devices. Using the equipment, a number of micro-structures were successfully fabricated including a winecup of several tens of micrometers.

또한 XRF(X-ray fluorescence) 분석을 통해 원소별 합금비를 정량적으로 분석하였다. 본 연구 결과를 통해 casting기법으로 생산된 귀금속 제품의 강도, 경도, 표면특성을 향상시킬 수 있는 최적조건을 얻을 수 있었다.

  • A P/M high speed steel of ASP 30 grade was austenitized, gas quenched and tempered at various conditional. The mechanical properties such as hardness, bend strength and fracture toughness were evaluated after heat treatment. The microstructure and the type and volume fraction of carbides were analyzed by an optical microscope, image analyzer and XRD. The primary carbides after the heat treatment were MC and $M_6C$ type. The volume of the total carbide varied from 10 to 15% depending on the austenitizing and tempering temperature. The tempering temperature for maximum hardness was at around 52$0^{\circ}C$. But the maximum bend strength was obtained at about 55$0^{\circ}C$. The fracture toughness was largely affected by the presence of retained austenite after gas quenching and secondary hardening during tempering.
