We developed a new scheme for the highly sensitive near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) by using a dithering sample stage rather than a dithering probe. In the proposed scheme, the sample is directly loaded on one prong surface of a dithering bare tuning fork. Gap control between probe and sample is performed by detecting the shear force between an immobile fiber probe and the dithering sample. In a conventional NSOM, the Q factor drastically decreases from 7783 to 1000 or even to 100 by attaching a probe to the tuning fork. In our proposed NSOM, on the contrary, the Q factor does not change significantly, 7783 to 7480, when the sample is loaded directly to the tuning fork instead of attaching a probe. Consequently, the graphene sheets that cannot be observed by a conventional NSOM were clearly observed by the proposed method with sub-nanometer vertical resolution due to the extremely high Q factor.

In this study, graphene, the most attractive material today, has been applied to the wavelength-modulated surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor. The optical fiber sensor technology is the most fascinating topic because of its several benefits. In addition to this, the SPR phenomenon enables the detection of biomaterials to be label-free, highly sensitive, and accurate. Therefore, the optical fiber SPR sensor has powerful advantages to detect biomaterials. Meanwhile, Graphene shows superior mechanical, electrical, and optical characteristics, so that it has tremendous potential to be applied to any applications. Especially, grapheme has tighter confinement plasmon and relatively long propagation distances, so that it can enhance the light-matter interactions (F. H. L. Koppens, et al., Nano Lett., 2011). Accordingly, we coated graphene on the optical fiber probe which we fabricated to compose the wavelength-modulated SPR sensor (Figure 1.). The graphene film was synthesized via thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. Synthesized graphene was transferred on the core exposed region of fiber optic by lift-off method. Detected analytes were biotinylated double cross-over DNA structure (DXB) and Streptavidin (SA) as the ligand-receptor binding model. The preliminary results showed the SPR signal shifts for the DXB and SA binding rather than the concentration change.

The authenticity of bank note is threatened by increasing a counterfeit note with development of the information industry, recently. The importance of counterfeit discrimination is stressed, but there is a limits to popularization. Because usually, the existing counterfeit discriminator uses invisible ray zone like UV, IR, etc. The purpose of this paper is the construction of counterfeit discrimination system for \50,000 won bills. This system is used optical fiber sensor with excellent confidence as well as easy way of using in wave length of a visible ray zone. The light was altered by lightening optical fiber sensor to particular part of bank notes in order displacing response of optical fiber sensor. The experiment was processed with data of 100 bank notes on manufacture optical fiber, probe, jig. As a result, the discrimination conuterfeit was verified when the experiment was processing with hologram or CSI on the bank notes with three kinds of color printer.
We fabricated a fiber-optic alpha/beta detector, which is composed of a sensing probe, a plastic optical fiber, a photomultiplier tube, and a multichannel analyzer, to obtain the energy spectra of radioactive isotopes. As inorganic scintillators of a sensing probe, a ZnS(Ag) film was coupled with a $CaF_2$(Eu) crystal for alpha and beta spectroscopy. In this study, $^{210}Po$ and $^{90}Sr$ were used as alpha and beta sources, respectively, and we measured the radiation energy spectra using a fiber-optic alpha/beta detector to identify alpha and beta emitting radionuclides for nuclear medicine application. Also, the variations of energy spectrum were obtained according to the length of plastic optical fiber.
This paper describes a newly designed multipoint process monitoring system based on a NIR acousto-optic tunable filter. The NIR multipoint process monitoring system consists of a NIR AOTF device for wavelength selection, an InGaAs array sensor, and a specially designed iin-line type of optical fiber probe. Unlike a FTS(Fourier Transform Spectrometry) or grating based monitoring system, an AOTF has no moving parts, and it can be rapidly tuned to any wavelength in its operating range within microseconds. Thus, the AOTF is advantageous in terms of faster spectral imaging capability and rigidity required for industrial monitoring environment. In the current feasibility evaluation, an enhanced optical fiber probe with 3 monitoring points was used. However, ...
We implement numerical simulations for the distributed optical fiber sensor system that uses the spatially-selective Brillouin scattering, by treating the superposition of the optical-frequency-modulated pump/probe waves in the time domain. We obtain temporal and spatial distributions of Brillouin gain for various cases. Simulations are applied to the case of concatenated optical fibers of different kinds and the case of distributed temperature along the fiber, which give reasonable results for the distributed sensor. The result of using a triangular wave instead of a sinusoidal one as a modulation waveform shows that the triangular wave modulation has an advantage in spatial resolution.

We demonstrate a high-speed recording based on field-induced manipulation in combination with an optical reading of recorded bits on Au cluster films using the atomic force microscope (AFM) and the near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM). We reproduced 50 nm-sized mounds by applying short electrical pulses to conducting tips in a non-contact mode as a writing process. The recorded marks were then optically read using bent fiber probes in a transmission mode. A strong enhancement of light transmission is attributed to the local surface plasmon excitation on the protruded dots.

An intermodal switch based on optically-induced (through optical Kerr effect) periodic coupling in a two-mode waveguide is described and demonstrated. A high power pump beam injected into the two modes of the waveguide produced a periodic modulation of the refractive index profile with a period of modal beat length. this causes an intermodal coupling of the prove beam. The operating principle was successfully demonstrated in an elliptical core two-mode fiber with a counter-propagating pump-probe scheme.

In this study, we developed a fiber-optic temperature sensor (FOTS) based on a silicone oil and an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) to apply the measurement of a coolant leakage in the nuclear power plant. The sensing probe of the FOTS consists of a silicone oil, a stainless steel cap, a FC terminator, and a single mode optical fiber. Fresnel reflection arising at the interface between the silicone oil and the single mode optical fiber in the sensing probe is changed by varying the refractive index of the silicone oil according to the temperature. Therefore, we measured the optical power of the light signals reflected from the sensing probe. The measurable temperature range of the FOTS using a Cu-coated silica fiber is from $70^{\circ}C$ to $340^{\circ}C$ and the maximum operation temperature of the FOTS is sufficient for usage at the secondary system in the nuclear power plant.

As a feasibility study on development of a gamma imaging probe, we developed a scintillating film-based gamma imaging detector that can obtain scintillation images with information of gamma-ray distribution. The scintillating film-based gamma imaging detector was composed of a sensing probe, an image intensifier, and a beam profiler. To detect and transmit scintillation image, the sensing probe was fabricated by coupling a scintillating film, a fiber-optic image conduit, and a fiber-optic taper, consecutively. First, the optical images of USAF 1951 resolution target were obtained and then, modulation transfer function values were calculated to test the image quality of the sensing probe. Second, we measured the scintillation images according to the activity of the 137Cs and the distance between the surface of 137Cs and the distal-end of sensing probe. Finally, the intensities of scintillating light as functions of the activity and the distance were evaluated from the region of interest in the scintillation image. From the results of this study, it is expected that a fiber-optic gamma imaging detector can be developed to detect gamma-rays emitted from radiopharmaceuticals during radioimmunoguided surgery.
