  • A new Fabry-Perot tunable filter has been built with simple construction, which does not require any additional aligning and/or beam-confining components for the reduction of the diffraction loss. For this feature, one of the two fibers for the filter is processed to have a concave mirror whose curvature is the same as that of the wavefront of the Gaussian beam from the first fiber. After high reflection coatings, the two fibers are aligned to result in an FP filter whose bandwidth, free spectral range, and insertion loss is 1.47nm, 52nm, 5.6dB respectively.

  • The capability of pilot injection with small fuel quantity at all engine operating conditions is one of the main feature of the common rail direct injection system. The purpose of the pilot injection is to lower the engine noise and to reduce the NOx emissions. This study describes the pilot spray structure characteristics of the common-rail diesel injectors with different electric driving characteristics, including solenoid-driven and piezo-driven type. Namely three common-rail injectors with different electric current wave were investigated in this study. The pilot spray characteristics such as spray speed, spray tip penetration, and spray angle were obtained by spray images, which is measured by the back diffusion light illumination method with optical system for high-speed temporal photography. As this research results, it was found that pilot injection of common-rail system was effected by rate of injection with different electrical characteristic for injector driving.

  • Using solar occultation data obtained by Cassini/Visual Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS), we were able to retrieve the 1 - 5 mm optical-depth spectra of the Titanian haze, for which only selected wavelength and altitudinal ranges were previously analyzed. We found that the gross 1 - 5 mm shapes of the retrieved haze spectra are significantly different from the spectra of tholin samples in the literature. We also derived the vertical variation of the spectral structure of the $3.3-3.4{\mu}m$ absorption feature of the Titan haze from the VIMS data recorded between 250 and 700 km altitude. We found a marked change between 480 and 580 km in the relative amplitudes of the 3.33 and $3.38{\mu}m$ features which are characteristic of aromatic (double C=Cchains or rings) or aliphatic (single C-C chains) structural groups, respectively. Dicussions on this spectral and altitudinal variation will be presented.

  • In this paper we propose a new method for modeling indoor environment with stereo camera and suggest a localization method for mobile robot navigation on the basis of it. From the viewpoint of easiness in map building and exclusion of artificiality, the main idea of this paper is that environment is represented as global topological map and each node has omni-directional metric and color information by using stereo camera and pan/tilt mechanism. We use the depth and color information itself in image pixel as feature for environmental abstraction. In addition, we use only the depth and color information at horizontal centerline in image, where optical axis is passing. The usefulness of this m...

  • This paper introduces the problem of typeface classification of Hangul characters and proposes features for typeface classification among Serif and Sans-serif classes. Serif classes have a small decorative stroke around the beginning of vertical strokes, while Sans-serif classes have no serif. Therefore, the serif part is first segmented from the vertical strokes, and the direction of the serif is computed as the feature for Hangul typeface identification. To evaluate the performance of the proposed system, we used 3,000 characters extracted from Korean documents - 1,500 from Serif fonts, other 1,500 from Sans-serif fonts.

  • We present some results of the spectral analysis for Type Ia supernova SN 2011fe in M101, which was discovered by the Palomar Transient Factory on August 24 2011 UT. We performed spectroscopic observations for SN 2011fe at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory with the high resolution echelle spectrograph BOES attached to 1.8-m reflector. Spectra of 18 epochs are obtained from September 6 2011 to April 1 2012 UT. Spectral feature variations for several significant lines and explosion mechanism will be discussed.

  • the effect of heat treatment in oxygen ambient on the nucleation and growth of oxidation induced stacking faults(OSF) in n-type(100)silicon wafer has been investigated. The growth of OSF is determind as a function of oxygen concentration in silicon wafer, heat treatment time and temperature, and the activation energy for the growth of OSF can be obtained from the growth kinetics. The activation energies are respectively 2.66 eV for dry oxidation and 2.37 eV for wet oxidation. In this paper, we have also studied the structural feature of OSF with the comparison of optical microscopic morphology and crystalline structure.

  • Interpattern association (IPA) model which the interconnection weight matrix(IWM) is constructed by the association between patterns is effective in similar pattern recognitions. But, if the number of reference patterns is increased, the ability of recognition is decreased. Using a hierarchical recognition algorithm which adopts the tree search strategy, we classified reference patterns into sub-groups by similarity. In IPA model, if input includes random noise we make it converge to reference pattern by means of input includes random noise we make it converge to reference pattern by means of increasing the number of pixels of prohibited state in IWM. In relation to reference patterns the pixel of prohibited state made partially prohibited state of no connected state using which is not included common and feature regions by each reference patterns.

  • The effects of fiber orientation on acoustic emission(AE) characteristics have been studied for various composite laminates. Reflection and transmission optical microscopy were used to investigate the damage zone of specimens. AE signals were classified through short time Fourier transform(STFT) as different types: AE signals with a high intensity and high frequency band were due to fiber fracture, while weak AE signals with a low frequency band were due to matrix cracking and/or interfacial cracking. Characteristic feature in the rate of hit-events having high amplitudes showed a procedure of fiber breakages, which expressed the characteristic fracture processes of notched fiber-reinforced plastics with different fiber orientations. As a consequence, the behavior of fracture in the continuous composite laminates could be monitored through nondestructive evaluation(NDE) using the AE technique.
