  • The shadow, reflection, interference, and diffraction are proper phenomena concerning sound that is a kind of wave. By the late nineteenth century, similar optical phenomena had been detected already but these phenomena concerning sound had not been convincingly detected. It was Rayleigh who succeeded in detecting those phenomena without any reasonable doubt by the virtue of his original instruments and smart experimental settings. Rayleigh could detect the sound shadow by using the corner of a building and erase the shadow by some reflectors. And he constructed some apparatus similar to Young's interference apparatus famous in optics to detect the sonic interference. Furthermore, he first succeeded in illustrating the acoustical effectiveness of Poisson's disk by which optical diffraction had already been well known, and tested the effect of diffraction by spherical obstacles to ascertain that the result coincided with his theory.

  • Here we report Airy beams coupled with waveguide modes. These waveguide Airy (WAiry) beams propagate through layered planar structures inheriting the characteristics of waveguide modes as well as those of Airy beams, such as diffraction-free and accelerating features. In particular, we focus on the WAiry beams associated with backward waveguide modes, showing that the backward feature can alter the trajectories of the WAiry beams significantly. Based on this, we propose a new scheme of waveguide-type polarization/power beam splitters.

  • A CGH is a hologram generated by computer. It is widely applied to wavefront manipulation, synthesis, optical information processing and interferometer. Some methods have been used to determine the optimum phase pattern to achieve high diffraction efficiency and uniform intensity such as DBS (Direct Binary Search), SA (Simulated Annealing), GA(Genetic Algorithm). These methods require long computation time to generate a hologram. (omitted)

  • The glancing angle deposition (GLAD) technique was used to fabricate $ZrO_2$ thin films by electron-beam evaporation. The crystal structure, cross-sectional structure, surface morphology and optical properties are characterized by X-ray diffraction meter (XRD, Rigaku, Cu $K{\alpha}$ - radiation), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and spectrophotometer, respectively.

  • CdS thin films were deposited on glass substrates by R.F. magnetron sputtering method and some of the samples were treated by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) process. Effects of thermal annealing on structural and optical properties were investigated at different temperatures ranging from 100 to $600^{\circ}C$. The crystallographic structure of the films and the size of the crystallites in the films were studied by X-ray diffraction. The crystallite sizes were found to increase, and the X-ray diffraction patterns were seen to sharpen by annealing. Optical properties of the films were calculated using the envelope method and the photoluminescence measurements. The optical properties of the films were seen to be dependent on the film thicknesses. The energy gap of the films was found to decrease by annealing. The band edge sharpness of the optical absorption was seen to oscillate by thermal annealing. Annealing over $400^{\circ}C$ was seen to degrade the optical properties of the film. The best annealing temperature for the films was found to be $400^{\circ}C$ from the optical properties. It is observed that the CdS film annealed at $400^{\circ}C$ reveals the strongest UV emission intensity and narrowest full width at half maximum among the temperature ranges studied. The enhanced UV emission from the film annealed at $400^{\circ}C$ is attributed to the improved crystalline quality of CdS thin film due to the effective relaxation of residual compressive stress and achieving maximum grain size. The results show that heat treatments under optimal annealing condition can provide significant improvements in the properties of CdS thin films.

  • In this thesis, we observed the optical characteristic of amorphous chalcogenide thin films by He-Cd laser. Also, grating formation by He-Ne laser and He-Cd laser. After analyze diffraction efficiency of the time on the $Ag(200{\AA})/As_{40}Ge_{10}Se_{15}S_{35}$ thin films. The result diffraction efficiency of Maximun 0.2% reduced according to time grating formation by He-Ne laser. Diffraction efficiency of Maximun 0.1% showed stabiliy characteristic according to time grating formation by He-Cd laser.

  • Blue phase shows several different reflection colors from the randomly oriented domains and crystal direction. Also there are variations in the size of domains. The domain size is dependent on the temperature gradient. With smaller cooling rate of temperature, the domain size was increased compared with rapid cooling. With injection of light of specific wavelength, we find that the diffraction patterns were occurred around the light spot in the cell of blue phase. It was supposed to be from the matching of the phase retardation and domain size. However, actually the diffraction pattern is reflecting the lattice structure in double twist of the blue phase. The lattice constant from the radius of diffraction patterns shows very similar one from the reflection spectrum, which indicates the internal lattice constant in double twist of the blues phase.

  • High diffraction efficiency holographic gratings in silver halide emulsion were fabricated by using reversal bleaching process. The diffraction efficiencies of gratings were improved greatly by applying rapid drying procedure with isopropyl alcohol after bleaching with optimized developers. The dependency of diffraction efficiencies on the different groups of developers, the concentration of bleaching solutions, and the drying methods are investigated experimentally and the results were analyzed theoretically. Same as usual reversal bleaching process, the fabricated gratings showed very low scttering compared to those made by conventional bleach process. The maximum diffraction efficiency was 88%.
