Characteristics of reflective LCDs, which have gained a lot of notice in recent years, rely largely on optical design of circular polarizers and the quarter-wave plates, as a component. Important design includes wavelength dispersion, viewing angle, uniformity of display and matching of refractive index. Our work has contributed to improving performance of reflective LCDs by enhancing the characteristics of polymer film using stretching and optical lamination technologies. To design that offers higher contrast and wider viewing angle, we have discovered that it is necessary to control viewing angle variation of the polarizing axis in order to compensate for the viewing angle of the polarizing film as well as the optical anisotropic properties of liquid crystal. Applying this technology to circular polarizers used for reflective LCDs enables design of wide viewing angle circular polarizers. In order to realize higher contrast for reflective LCDs, it is also necessary to design other optical materials including polarizing films. For design of hybrid optical film, it is particularly necessary to reduce surface reflection and interface reflection. This paper also reports our findings concerning this topic.
In this study, the internal structure of an optical waveguide embedded in a flexible optical circuit board is observed with a confocal microscope. In order to increase the light reflection from an internal material interface with a very small index difference, and thus enhance the signal contrast, a theta microscopy scheme has been integrated into a conventional confocal microscope, and a high NA oil-immersion lens has been used. The interface reflectivity is increased from roughly 0.0015% to 0.025% by the proposed method, and the internal structure can thus be successfully measured.
Recently laser speckle contrast (LSC) imaging has become a widely used optical method for in vivo assessment of blood flow in the animal brain. LSC imaging is useful for monitoring brain hemodynamics with relatively high spatio-temporal resolution. A speckle contrast imaging system has been implemented with electrical sensory stimulation apparatus. LSC imaging is combined with optical intrinsic signal imaging in order to measure changes in cerebral blood flow as well as neural activity in response to electrical sensory stimulation applied to the hindlimb region of the mouse brain. We found that blood flow and oxygen consumption are correlated and both sides of hindlimb activation regions are symmetrically located. This apparatus could be used to monitor spatial or temporal responses of cerebral blood flow in animal disease models such as ischemic stroke or cortical spreading depression.

High contrast grating (HCG) is the structure made up of the sub-wavelength grating of high-index and the surrounding layer of low-index, which reveals high contrast between two materials. Its advantages include high reflectivity over a broad bandwidth, polarization and wavelength selectivity, optical high-Q resonator, and phase modulation. In this work, the HCG structure comprising of indium tin oxide (ITO) and Silicon (Si), for the surrounding layer and the grating layer respectively, was studied. Its theoretical model was established, and transmittance, phase and optical behavior were calculated by rigorous coupled-wave analysis and finite element method. Furthermore, the established structure was fabricated to validate its feasibility. The fabricated structure shows the focusing capability whose length is about $10{\mu}m$, and the feasibility of the structure was demonstrated. It is also meaningful that ITO layer can contribute to the fabrication of the HCG structure, leading to enable the structure to be electrical-driven.
We demonstrate an optical gate architecture using a single SOA to perform AND, OR and NOT logic functions. Simple reconfigurable all-optical logic operations are implemented using RZ modulated signals at 40 Gb/s. Contrast ratio and extinction ratio values have been analysed for the different types of logic gates. Maximum extinction ratio and contrast ratio achieved are 19dB and 17.2 dB respectively. Simple structure and potential for integration makes this architecture an interesting approach in photonic computing and optical signal processing.
In this study, we proposed an optical compensation method to improve the symmetricity of contrast ratio for wide viewing angle IPS (in-plane switching) LCD. First, the phase retardation depending on the thickness of compensation film is calculated, and then the phase change is presented at the $Poincar{\acute{e}}$ sphere. The phase retardation and the polarization state of the light passing through the optical elements are caculated by using the EJMM (extended Jones matrix method). In addition, the transmittance and the contrast countour are also calculated by using the Berremann's $4{\times}4$ matrix method. The simulation is carried out for a IPS LC cell with positive A/C/A compensation film. From the standard deviation of the contrast ratio, we confirmed the symmetricity at each viewing angle is inversely proportional to the standard deviation and calculated the optimum design condition of the uniaxial compensation film for the IPS LCD.

We propose a new method for improving the phase contrast of a multiphase digital holographic microscope using a spatial light modulator (SLM). Using the SLM as the annulus, our method improves the light contrast of the object edge to achieve higher accuracy. We demonstrate a digital holographic microscopy technique that provides a 30% improvement in the phase contrast compared to conventional microscopy, which utilizes a mechanical annulus. The phase-contrast improvement allows the 3D reconstructed hologram to be determined more precisely.
This study examined the effects of particle size on the light scattering of a nano-sized color filter pigment used to obtain a range of colors in liquid crystal displays. The contrast ratio is one of the most important characteristics of liquid crystal displays. When a color filter is located between two crossed polarizers, the size of the pigment can give rise to a decrease in the contrast ratio due to Rayleigh scattering by the nanoparticles in the filter. The size effect of the color filter pigment on the contrast ratio was investigated in terms of the depolarization parameter. As an experimental result, the depolarization parameter increased with decreasing pigment size. Therefore, a smaller pigment size can reduce light leakage caused by light scattering in the color filter between two crossed polarizers. The depolarization function was also proposed as a useful function for predicting the decrease in the contrast ratio of the color filter.
It is established that the perceived image contrast is affected by surround luminance. In order to get the same perceived image contrast, the optimum surround compensation ratios for those surround conditions is needed. Much research has been performed for dark, dim, and average surrounds. In this study, a wide range of surround luminance from dark up to $2087cd/m^2$ was considered. Using magnitude estimation method, the change in perceived brightness of six test stimuli was measured under seven surround conditions; dark, dim, 2 levels of average, bright, and 2 levels of over-bright surrounds. To drive the perceived image contrast from the perceived brightness, two different definitions of contrast were tested. Their calculated results were compared with the visual data of our previous work. And to conclude, the perceived contrast compensation ratios were 1:1.11:1.2 for average, dim and dark surrounds. These were close to CIECAM02 model (1:1.17:1.31). Besides, for average, bright, over-bright1 and over-bright2 surrounds the ratios 1:1.17:1.42:1.69 were determined. For intermediate or more extreme surround conditions, the compensation ratio was obtained from the linear interpolation or extrapolation.
