  • We review the research on specialty fiber couplers with emphasis placed on the characteristics that make them attractive for biomedical imaging, optical communications, and sensing applications. The fabrication of fiber couplers has been carried out with, in addition to conventional single mode fiber, various specialty fibers such as photonic crystal fiber, double clad fiber, and hole-assisted fiber with a Ge-doped core. For the fiber coupler fabrication, the side polishing and the fused biconical tapered methods have been developed. These specialty fiber couplers have been applied to optical coherence tomography, fluorescence spectroscopy, fiber sensors, and optical communication systems. This review aims to provide a detailed statement on the recent progress and novel applications of specialty fiber couplers.

  • A wide variety of devices and systems exist whose main function is to generate an image. These devices and systems are used for many different purposes and find applications in many different walks of life. We are all very familiar with some of these systems such as the photographic camera (that can produce a permanent record of a scene on sensitized sheet material) and the television set (that can receive a suitably coded electromagnetic signal broadcast through space and convert it into an image). • Subpicosecond all-optical switching method based on the simultaneous two-photon coherence exchange is proposed and numerically demonstrated. The optical switching mechanism is based on the optical field induced dark resonance swapping via nondegenerate four-wave mixing processes. For potential applications of ultrafast all-optical switching in fiber-optic communications, 10-THz channel number independent quantum router is discussed.

  • Multizeros(multiple order zeros) optical beams which belong to the Laguerre-Gaussian beams, have rotational phase and conically-shaped amplitude structures around multizeros points in their phase and amplitude profiles, respectively. Especially, they have their own characteristics that the multizero points do not vanish over free-space propagation. Therefore, they are expected to be adequate for the applications of long-range optical measurement by using their multizero points as optical markers for the deformation sensing. In this paper, fundamental properties of multizeros optical beams for long-range optical measurement applications are investigated and clarified. In particular, the mathematical investigations are described on the characteristics of multizeoros optical beams such as (1) separation of a multizero into isolated single order zeros, (2) topological charge of zeros distribution which are induced by superposing them. And also the outline of a fundamental experiment and its result are explained briefly.
