  • A scheme for predicting the concentration of a glucose solution based on its relative optical absorbance at multiple probe wavelengths was proposed and verified. The relative absorbance at each of the probe wavelength was obtained with respect to the absorbance at a reference wavelength. The single reference wavelength (1310 nm) and a group of four different probe wavelengths (1064, 1550, 1685, 1798 nm) were selected to exhibit the glucose absorbance with opposite signs, thereby enhancing the accuracy of the prediction. The final glucose concentration was estimated by taking the average of the predicted values provided by the four probe wavelengths. The absorbance of the glucose solution for the path length of 5 mm was $-1.42{\times}10^{-6}\;AU$/(mg/dL) at the reference wavelength of 1310 nm and peaked at $+8.12{\times}10^{-6}\;AU$/(mg/dL) at 1685 nm. The concentration of the glucose solution was decently predicted by means of the proposed scheme with the standard error of prediction of ${\sim}28\;mg/dL$. In addition, the influence of the ambient temperature and the fat thickness upon the prediction of the glucose concentration was examined. The absorption change with the temperature was $-9.1{\times}10^{-5}\;AU/^{\circ}C$ in the temperature range of $26{\sim}40^{\circ}C$ at the reference wavelength, and $-2.08{\times}10^{-2}\;AU/^{\circ}C$ at 1550 nm. And the absorption change with respect to the fat thickness was +1.093 AU/mm at the probe wavelength of 1685 nm.

  • The simulation code was developed for the development of the split-disk geometry glass amplifier, which could design the laser apparatus and analyze the properties of the laser system. The flashlamp emission energy at the short wavelength region must be reduced, while maintaining a current density between 2000 and 4000 A/$\textrm{cm}^{2}$, in order to reduce the thermal loading in the laser glass and to raise the coupling efficiency between the emission spectrum of the flashlamps and the absorption spectrum of the laser glass. By cutting the laser glass into three equal pieces, the temperature rise in the laser glass dropped by 70% due to the efficient removal of the heat in the laser glass. It was found that the $Nd^{3+}$ doping rate of each laser glass should be properly selected and the optimum value of the product of the absorption coefficient $\alpha$ and the thickness d of the laser glass is about 0.26 in the split-disk geometry.

  • Luminescence characteristics of Ag-doped ZnO as the quantum dot materials to increasing the efficiency on dye-sensitized solar cells (DSC) have been studied. Ag doped ZnO powder was produced by the self-sustaining combustion process using ultrasonic spraying heating method. Luminescence wavelength region of the ZnO by Ag doping was shifted to longer wavelength. Tn the case of the Ag doped ZnO powder, broad luminescence spectrum centered on 600nm was observed. On the other hand, we compared PL data of RTA treated ZnO:Ag film at various temperatures because the front electrode of solar cell was in need of the sintering process. In XRD and PL data for RTA treated film at the 500$^{\circ}C$ showed good property. And, it was found that the grain size wasn't growing but only optical property was changed. According to the result of XRD, PL, absorption, emission spectrum and DV-X${\alpha}$ used in theoretical calculation, it is considered to be possible to use Ag doped ZnO as quantum dot material for improving DSC efficiency.

  • A reflection type SEED from LP-MOCVD grown InGaAs/GaAs ESQW structures, with 5% In fraction, has been fabricated and its basic characteristics were investigated. Its intrinsic region consists of 50 pairs of alternating $100{\AA}$ $In_{0.05}Ga_{0.95}As$ barrier and $100{\AA}$ GaAs layers. And a multilayer reflector stack of $Al_{0.12}Ga_{0.88}As(641{\AA})-/AlAs(774{\AA})$ was vertically integrated below the p-i-n structures. The device processing includes the mesa etching, insulator deposition, indium metallization, and thermal alloy for Ohmic contact. Photocurrent spectrum measurement showed the exciton absorption peak at 905nm and availability as a optical switching device. This device showed a contrast ratio of 2:1 by the reflectance spectrum measurement.

  • Cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) is a high-sensitive laser spectroscopic technique capable of measuring concentrations of trace gases. We have demonstrated a new design of the CRDS spectrometer with a continuous wave (CW) laser. The ring-dwon signal is produced through blocking the incident CW laser by scanning the cavity length fast toward off-resonance iwth PZT (piezoelectric transducer). We have also measured an absorption spectrum of acetylene overtone transitions near 570 nm at the pressure of 2700 Pa, and the minimum detectable absorption coefficient has been found to be about $3{\times}10^{-9}\cm^{-1}$.

  • In this study, we investigate the optical properties of InP/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) by controlling the synthesis temperature of InP. The size of InP determined by the empirical formula tends to increase with temperature: the size of InP synthesized at $140^{\circ}C$ and $220^{\circ}C$ is 2.46 nm and 4.52 nm, respectively. However, the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of InP is not observed because of the formation of defects on the InP surface. The growth of InP is observed during the deposition of the shell (ZnS) on the synthesized InP, which is ended up with green-red PL spectrum. We can adjust the PL spectrum and absorption spectrum of InP/ZnS by simply adjusting the core temperature. Thus, we conclude that there exists an optimum shell thickness for the QDs according to the size.

  • We observed a velocity-selective saturated absorption spectrum when the pump beam intersects the probe beam at a finite angle with a saturated absorption spectroscopic configuration in the cesium vapor cell. And we also observed a dispersion-like signal by measuring the difference between two velocity-selective absorption spectra produced by two parallel probe beams intersected by one pump beam. The dispersion-like signal was changed with the crossing angle and the crossing position of the pump and probe beams and compared with the calculated result. The dispersion-like signal was used as a frequency discriminator, and the laser could be frequency-stabilized without any frequency modulation. As a result, the square root of Allan variance was $\sigma_y(\tau=1s)=7$\times10^{-12}$, for the sampling time of 1 s.of 1 s.

  • We report the electro-optical properties of the sensory rhodopsin II using a near-field scanning microwave microscope(NSMM). Rhodopsin was known as a photoreceptor pigment with a retinal as a chromophore via a protonated Schiff base and consists of seven ${\alpha}-helical$ transmembrane segments. The sensory rhodopsin II, expressing E. coli UT5600 with endogenous retinal biosynthesis system and purified with $Ni^{-2}-NTA$ affinity chromatography in the presence of 0.02 % DM (Dodecyl Maltoside) from Natronomonas pharaonis. We measured the absorption spectra and the transients difference of sensory rhodopsin II from Natronomonas pharaonis using a UV/VIS spectrophotometer with Nd-Yag Laser (532 nm). The absorption spectra of NpSR II showed a typical rhodopsin spectrum with a left shoulder region and the photointermediates spectra of NpSR II-ground state (${\lambda}max=498\;nm$), NpSR II-M state (${\lambda}max=390\;nm$), and NpSR II-O state (${\lambda}max=550\;nm$) during the photocycle. The observed photocycle reaction was confirmed by measuring the microwave reflection coefficient $S_{11}$ at an operating frequency of f=3.93-3.95 GHz and compared with the results of a photocycle of NpSR II.

  • Compared with bulk material, quantum dots have received increasing attention due to their fascinating physical properties, including optical and electronic properties, which are due to the quantum confinement effect. Especially, Luminescent CdSe quantum dots have been highly investigated due to their tunable size-dependent photoluminescence across the visible spectrum. They are of great interest for technical applications such as light-emitting devices, lasers, and fluorescent labels. In particular, quantum dot-based light-emitting diodes emit high luminance. Quantum dots have very high luminescence properties because of their absorption coefficient and quantum efficiency, which are higher than those of typical dyes. CdSe quantum dots were synthesized as a function of the synthesis time and synthesis temperature. The photoluminescence properties were found strongly to depend on the reaction time and the temperature due to the core size changing. It was also observed that the photoluminescence intensity is decreased with the synthesis time due to the temperature dependence of the band gap. The wavelength of the synthesized quantum dots was about 550-700 nm and the intensity of the photoluminescence increased about 22~70%. After the CdSe quantum dots were synthesized, the particles were found to have grown until reaching a saturated concentration as time increased. Red shift occurred because of the particle growth. The microstructure and phase developments were measured by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD), respectively.
