  • Using LED sources, the system that performs optical logic function of the input data arrays will be presented. Sixteen possible functions of two binary data arrays, such as AND, OR, NOR and XOR are simply obtained in parallel by controlling LED switching mode. Experimental result and some examples of application will be given.

  • In this paper the effect of instability and chaos in optical fiber networks based on the Internet is described. Nonlinear optical fiber effect especially Brillouin scattering in networks has emerged as the essential means for the construction of active optical devices used for all-optic in-line switching, channel selection, amplification, oscillation in optical communications and a host of other applications. The inherent optical feedback by the back-scattered Stokes wave in optical networks also leads to instabilities in the form of optical chaos. This paradigm of optical chaos in fiber Internet serves as a test for fundamental study of chaos and its suppression and exploitation in practical application in optical fiber communication. This paper attempts to present a survey and some of our research findings on the nature of Brillouin chaotic effect on Internet based optical communication.

  • Latching optical switches and optical logic gates AND and OR are demonstrated, for the first time, by the monolithic integration of a vertical cavity lasers with depleted optical thyristor structure, which have not only a low threshold current with 0.65 mA. but also a high on/off contrast ratio more than 50 dB. By simple operating technique with changing a reference switching voltage, this single device operates as two logic functions, optical logic AND and OR. The thyristor laser fabricated using the oxidation process achieved a high optical output power efficiency and a high sensitivity to the optical input light.

  • In this paper, we propose a group scheduling scheme to efficiently utilize network resources for core nodes in optical burst switching networks. This scheme schedules multiple bursts utilizing an interval graph to obtain the maximum stable set using the information such as arrival times and burst lengths from the collected header packets. Simultaneous scheduling of multiple bursts in a scheduling window results in lower burst loss probability and increased channel utilization than those proposed previously using one-to-one mapping. Simulation results for both cases of variable and fixed burst sizes show that the group scheduling scheme is better than the immediate scheduling, so called Latest Available Unused Channel with Void Filling, scheme in both performance metrics above mentioned.

  • The separated management and operation of commercial IP/optical multilayer networks makes network operators look for a unified control plane (UCP) to reduce their capital and operational expenditure. Software-defined networking (SDN) provides a central control plane with a programmable mechanism, regarded as a promising UCP for future optical networks. The general control and scheduling mechanism in SDN-based optical burst switching (OBS) networks is insufficient so the controller has to process a large number of messages per second, resulting in low network resource utilization. In view of this, this paper presents the burst-flow scheduling mechanism (BFSM) with a proposed scheduling algorithm considering channel usage. The simulation results show that, compared with the general control and scheduling mechanism, BFSM provides higher resource utilization and controller performance for the SDN-based OBS network in terms of burst loss rate, the number of messages to which the controller responds, and the average latency of the controller to process a message.
