  • We propose and analyze novel optical thyristor which can be used in free-space optical interconnection(FSOI). Novel optical thyristors are fully depleted optical thyristors(DOTs) using bottom mirror and/or multiple quantum wells (MQW), thereby its switching characteristics can be improved significantly. We obtain switching characteristics using coupled junction model associated with current oriented method. Emission characteristics of the DOT are obtained using thin film characteristic matrix and van Roosbroeck-Shockley relation. Compared to the performance using conventional DOT, the optical switching energy is decreased by a factor of 0.43 and the bit-rate is increased by a factor of 1.61 when the DOT with MQW and bottom mirror is employed for FSOI.

  • The packet error rates of an optical packet switching node with an optical address processor using an EDFA in order to detect M-ary correlation pulses at a fiber-optical delay line matched filter output have been evaluated. Effects of A PIN diode NEP, the gain and noise figure of the EDFA, and the bandwidth of an optical filter on the packet error rate of the switching node have been compared. There is negligible error rate change depending upon the variation of the PIN diode NEP and the EDFA gain. If the bandwidth of the optical filter is below 10 times of the data rate, there is no appreciable effect on the error rate. If the noise figure of the EDFA increases, however, the power penalty increases as much as the noise figure increment at all the bit rates and for address code sets considered in this work.

  • In this paper, we discuss a study on Advanced TCA(ATCA) based 40 Gbps level Optical transport platform having 120 Gbps(12, 10 Gbps modules) switching capacity as an OTP based large capacity multi service technology. The ATCA-based OTP(Optical Transport Platform) is composed of OTH(Optical Transport Hierarchy) 10 or 40 Gbps client signal interface module, OTH 10 Gbps transport module, high-rate OTH unit switch, system processor, and can be installed in ATCA platform.

  • Optical bounce which occurs by over twist of the liquid crystal (LC) director has a problem of response time in fringe-field switching (FFS) modes. After removing the electric field, effective birefringence ($d{\Delta}n_{eff}$) at the edge of pixel electrode meets the $\lambda/2$ phase instantly, since tilt angle of LC directors at that position suddenly decreases compared to twist angle. In this paper, based on the careful analysis, origin of optical bounce has been explained.

  • In this paper, an optical switch/modulator is designed and its light propagating characteristics analyzed using a simplified BPM. The distinctive feature of this switch/modulator is that all its waveguide branches are designed as single-mode. The principle of the device is based on the coupled mode theory in the Y-junction interconnecting waveguide. In spite of the fact all waveguides are designed as single-mode, by adjusting the interconnecting waveguide length'of the device the same characteristics as existing up to date devices are obtainable. Numerical results show that the switching characteristics periodically depend upon an interconnecting waveguide length with a spatial of about $150^{{\mu}m}$ in the $Ti:LiNbO_3$ step index waveguide. The design concept would therefore be utilized effectively in fabricating a monolithic high density optical integrated circuit.

  • A compact plasmonic switching scheme, based on the phase change of a thin-film chalcogenide material ($Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$), is proposed and numerically investigated at optical-communication wavelengths. Surface plasmon polariton modal analysis is conducted for various thicknesses of dielectric and phase-change material layers, and the optimized condition is induced by finding the region of interest that shows a high extinction ratio of surface plasmon polariton modes before and after the phase transition. Full electromagnetic simulations show that multiple reflections inside the active region may conditionally increase the overall efficiency of the on/off ratio at a specific length of the active region. However, it is shown that the optimized geometrical condition, which shows generally large on/off ratio for any length of active region, can be distinguished by observing the multiple-reflection characteristic inside the active region. The proposed scheme shows an on/off switching ratio greater than 30 dB for a length of a few micrometers, which can be potentially applied to integrated active plasmonic systems.

  • To analyze the saturating process of $Cr^{4+}:YAG$ crystal and plastic organic dye as the saturable absorber, we have measured the residual optical losses between a free running and a passive Q-switching mode for various optical densities. The undepleted ground state population density and the saturated transmission of the saturable absorber have been evaluated by the additional optical losses with the increased threshold pump energies between two resonators. ill the passive Q-switching mode, the saturable transmission of saturable absorber is less than the maxrnium saturable transmission due to the undepleted ground state population density. nsity.

  • We study numerically the temporal evolutions of two orthogonally polarized pulses with width less than 100fsec in all-optical phase-shift switches. We analyze the complicated interplay between a soliton pulse and a higher-order soliton pulse, including the self-and the cross-Raman scattering and the walk-off effect. We also investigate the influence of these interactions on switching performance, including pulse-shape, phase-shift distribution, and contrast ratio. In particular we show that an optical fiber with a typical birefringence (Δn : 2.4$\times$10$^{-5}$ ) can be used with good switching performance in such all-optical switches.
