The effect of diffusing substrate and pillow lenses on the outcoupling efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) was studied by optical simulation based on the point-dipole model. The diffusing substrate included Mie scatterers by which the condition of total internal reflection could be broken. The finite-difference time-domain method was used to obtain the intensity distribution on the transparent electrode of an OLED, which was used as a light source to carry out a ray-tracing simulation of the OLED and the diffusing substrate. It was found that the outcoupling efficiency of the OLED was sensitive to the thickness of organic layers and could be increased by 21.0% by adopting a diffusing substrate in which Mie scatterers whose radius was $2.0{\mu}m$ were included at the density of $10^7mm^{-3}$ and by 65.5% by forming one pillow lens with the radius of 2 mm on the front surface of the glass substrate. This study revealed that the outcoupling efficiency could be improved by adopting diffusing substrate and pillow lenses along with the optimization of the thickness of each layer in the OLED.

In this study, it was investigated about optical simulation in direct-type backlight design. Direct-type backlight has been used high-brightness backlight such as medical LCD application. The key parameter in designing direct-type backlight was consists of three geometrical dimension such as the distance of two lamps, the gap of lamp and reflection plate and the number of lamps. It has many of variations in optical design and it causes the different properties in backlight system. It shows the best values of above parameters; 26 mm of the distance of two lamps, 4.5 mm of the gap of lamp and reflection plate and 16 lamps. And we produced the specimen as above condition, and acquired good result in backlight such as the value of the brightness is 6423 nit in center of emission area and less than 5 % in brightness uniformity. It shows the effective ways of designing backlight system using optical simulation method for medical LCD application.
Reflective polarizers can be used as luminance enhancement films for LCD backlights via the polarization recycling process. The optical performances of a wire grid polarizer (WGP) as a reflective polarizer adopted in edge-lit backlights were investigated by luminance evaluation and a time-domain simulation technique. The results were compared to those of a commercial dielectric multilayer film. The luminance gain factor of WGP was smaller than that of the multilayer film by 18%. This was attributed to a much larger internal loss of WGP due to light absorption by metal wires. The internal losses of both reflective polarizers and the polarization conversion efficiency of the backlight were obtained numerically based on a phenomenological model. The optical performances of WGP were optimized by using a time-domain simulation technique. The luminance gain increased and was found to become comparable to, but slightly less than the case of the dielectric multilayer film with decreasing line width.

In this paper, we propose a method used to measure the polarization state of a field with multiple polarization singularities (PSs), such as an array of PSs and PSs in vector speckle. A checkerboard is used to construct characteristic points, which makes it possible to calibrate the mismatches between pictures obtained during the rotation of a quarter-wave plate and a polarizer. Using this method a field with an array of PSs is measured. The experimental result is compared with the numerical simulation. We also carry out some data analysis. The comparison and analysis emphasize the necessity and feasibility of this method to measure the PSs.
We show that the minimum EOP (eye-opening penalty) obtained by tunable dispersion compensation is a function of a figure of merit for a nonlinear process, $I_0L_{eff}$, where $I_0$ is the optical intensity and $L_{eff}$ is the effective length of the interaction region. Using this rule, we do not need to conduct nonlinear simulations in all the cases of signal power and transmission length to obtain the signal distortion in dispersion-managed optical transmission. Instead, we need to conduct a simulation in only one case of a signal power and find the functional relation, and then we can obtain the values of the signal distortion in other cases using the discovered functional relation. This technique can reduce the number of nonlinear simulations to less than 10%.
Adaptive optics (AO) systems are becoming more complex to improve their optical performance and enlarge their field of view, so it is a hard and time consuming process to set up and optimize the components of AO systems with actual implementation. However, simulations allow AO scientists and engineers to experiment with different optical layouts and components without needing to obtain and prepare them physically. In this paper, we introduce a new AO simulation named the Korea Adaptive Optics Simulation (KAOS), independently developed by LIG Nex1. We verified the performance of KAOS by comparing with other AO simulation tools. In the comparison simulation, we confirmed the results from KAOS and other AO simulation tools were very similar. Also, we proposed a laser tomography AO system with five Rayleigh laser guide stars (LGSs) optimized by using KAOS to overcome the disadvantages of the AO system with a single sodium LGS for the satellite imaging system. We verified the performance of the proposed AO system using KAOS, and the simulation result showed averaged Strehl ratio of 0.37.
To protect and manage the Korean space assets including satellites, it is important to have precise positions and orbit information of each space objects. While Korea currently lacks optical observatories dedicated to satellite tracking, the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) is planning to establish an optical observatory for the active generation of space information. However, due to geopolitical reasons, it is difficult to acquire an adequately sufficient number of optical satellite observatories in Korea. Against this backdrop, this study examined the possible locations for such observatories, and performed simulations to determine the differences in precision of optical orbit estimation results in relation to the relative baseline distance between observatories. To simulate more realistic conditions of optical observation, white noise was introduced to generate observation data, which was then used to investigate the effects of baseline distance between optical observatories and the simulated white noise. We generated the optical observations with white noise to simulate the actual observation, estimated the orbits with several combinations of observation data from the observatories of various baseline differences, and compared the estimated orbits to check the improvement of precision. As a result, the effect of the baseline distance in combined optical GEO satellite observation is obvious but small compared to the observation resolution limit of optical GEO observation.
We present simulation methods to accurately determine the transmission efficiency and far-field patterns (FFPs) of a shallow-etched waveguide grating antenna (WGA) formed on a silicon-on-insulator wafer based on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) approach. The directionality and the FFP of a WGA with >1-mm in length can be obtained reliably by simulating a truncated WGA structure using a three-dimensional FDTD method and a full-scale WGA using a two-dimensional FDTD with the effective index method. The developed FDTD methods are applied to the simulation of an optical phased array (OPA) composed of a uniformly spaced WGA array, and the steering-angle dependent transmission efficiency and FFPs are obtained in OPA structures having up to 128-channel WGAs.

The optical characteristics of transparent electrode with various kind of materials and thickness to be used for organic photovoltaic cells were studied by simulation methodology. It demonstrated that the transmittance varies with the kinds of materials, the number of layers and change in the thickness of each layer. In the case of the structure composed of dielectric/Ag/dielectric, optimized transmittance was higher than 90% at 550 nm and the thickness of the Ag layer was ~10nm. Top and bottom dielectric materials can be changed with different refractive index and extinction coefficient. The relation between the optical transmittance of device and transparent electrode with different refractive indices was discussed as well. By processing numerical simulations, an optimized optical transmittance can be obtained by tunning the thickness and materials of transparent electrode.
