  • An in-situ optical monitoring method for real-time process monitoring of electrochemical copper deposition (CED) is presented. Process variables to be controlled in achieving desired process results are numerous in the CED process, and the importance of the chemical bath conditions cannot be overemphasized for a successful process. Conventional monitoring of the chemical solution for CED relies on the pH value of the solution, electrical voltage level for the reduction of metal cations, and gravity measurement by immersing sensors into a plating bath. We propose a nonintrusive optical monitoring technique using three types of optical sensors such as chromatic sensors and UV/VIS spectroscopy sensors as potential candidates as a feasible optical monitoring method. By monitoring the color of the plating solution in the bath, we revealed that optically acquired information is strongly related to the thickness of the deposited copper on the wafers, and that the chromatic information is inversely proportional to the ratio of $Cu$ (111) and {$Cu$ (111)+$Cu$ (200)}, which can used to measure the quality of the chemical solution for electrochemical copper deposition in advanced interconnection technology.

  • 1.55${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ PnpN optical thyristor as a smart optical switch has potential applications in advanced optical communication systems. PnpP optical thyristors operating at 1.55${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ are proposed and fabricated for the first time. In the optical thyristors, we employ InGaAs/InP multiple quantum well (MQW) for the active n- and p-layers. The thyristors show sufficiently nonlinear s-shape I-V characteristics and spontaneous emission. In the OFF-state, the device has a high-impedance up to switching voltage of 4.03(V). On the other hand, it has low-impedance and emits spontaneous light as a light-emitting diode in the ON-state voltage of 1.77(V), and switching voltage is changed under several light input conditions. It can be used as a header processor in optical asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), as a hard limiter in optical code division multiple access (CDMA) and as a wavelength converter in optical WDM systems.

  • Optical Multistage Interconnection Networks(OMINs) comprising photonic switches have been studied extensively as important interconnecting building blocks for communication networks and parallel computing systems. A basic element of photonic switching networks is a 2$\times$2 directional coupler with two inputs and two outputs. This paper is concerned with the diagnosis of cross-talk-faults in OMINs. As the size of today's network becomes very large, the conventional diagnosis methods based on tests and simulation have become inefficient, or even more, impractical. In this paper, we propose a simple and easily implementable algorithm for detection and isolation of the single crosstalk-fault in OMINs. Specifically, we develope an algorithm fur the isolation of the source fault in switching elements whenever the single crosstalk-fault is detected in OMINS. The proposed algorithm is illustrated by an example of 16$\times$16 banyan network.

  • In this paper, a grating to apply for the optical interconnection is designed using a Genetic Algorithm(GA) as a robust and an efficient schema. A hybrid optical interconnection system architecture is implemented by the liquid crystal panel as a programmable spatial light modulator. As the result of geometrical transformation to obtain the quantitative data for $3{\times}3$ spot beams at CCD array detector by optical experiment truthfully, the mean of beam intensity as a gray level is 202, the maximum value is 225, the minimum value is 186, and a uniformity is quantitatively $1.93{\times}10^{-1}$ similar to simulation result.

  • We propose and fabricate a vertically integrated waveguide thermo-optic switch. It controls the optical path between two vertically stacked waveguide. As a first step, we fabricate polymeric waveguides. The measured propagation loss is ranged from 0.3 db/cm to 0.4 dB/cm at the wavelength of 1.55 $\mu\textrm{m}$. We fabricate the proposed vertically integrated waveguide thermo-optic switch to demonstrate its preliminary feasibility. The measured crosstalk is better than -10 db. The power consumption is about 500 mW. Further effort is necessary to improve its performance.

  • In this paper, we used differential amplifiers to reduce crosstalk in a wireless in-house optical interconnection in which two channel beams are overlapped. Experimental results show that environmental optical noise is also reduced using the same principle. This method is realized very easily with differential amplifiers without any optical filters or electrical filters. It is very useful in short distance optical interconnections.

  • In this paper, optical noise is reduced by a differential detector with a plastic optical fiber bundle in a wireless optical interconnection. A plastic optical fiber bundle divides the received optical signal equally and connects it to two photodiodes. In this configuration two photodiodes effectively detect the optical signal at one point, and the output voltage variation due to the abrupt change of optical noise distribution in space disappears. The signal to noise ratio in a differential detector with a fiber bundle was improved to be $10\;\cal{dB}$ higher than in a single photodiode with an optical filter.

  • In this study, an optical PCB was proposed which can overcome the limitations of the conventional PCB, and a new structure with pluggable lens was considered for a high-efficient passive alignment. The structure was a lens-added optical waveguide for the improvement of misalignment between the lens and the waveguide in the alignment. Also, as it had a barrier-type structure to prevent the surface damage of the lens by desorption, the high-efficient passive alignment can be realized. The structure was designed by optimizing the simulation and the fabrication process of the pluggable lens structure was conducted using the repetitive photolithography and the thermal reflow. The optical waveguide with the lens-integrated pluggable interconnection was fabricated by the imprint process using the polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) replica mold. Therefore, we confirmed the possibility of pluggable lens-added optical waveguide structure fabrication for high-efficient passive alignment.

  • Recently, by the increasing of data transmission rates, PCB is required high-speed data transmission rates and thin packaging. So optical PCB which is the combination of electrical layer and optical layer can be one of the solution to overcome the limitations of conventional electrical PCB. The most important factor in the implementation of optical PCB is optical interconnection. So the research on high-efficiency and passive alignment has been active. In this paper, we suggest built-in lens pluggable waveguide and we simulate its coupling efficiency and structural stability. Optical simulation results show that the proposed structure has higher efficiency than no lens structure about 1.86 times in transmitter and about 1.42 times in receiver. In structure simulation, inner lens has no damage in desorption process. Therefore, we shown that the proposed structure has a high coupling efficiency and structural stability.

  • With the exponentially increasing Internet traffic and emergence of more versatile and heterogeneous applications, the design of datacenter networks (DCNs) is subject to unprecedented requirements for larger capacity and more flexible switching granularities. Envisioning Optical-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (O-OFDM) as a promising candidate for such a scenario, we motivate the use of O-OFDM as the underlying switching technology in order to provide sufficient switching capacity and elastic bandwidth allocation. For this purpose, this article reviews the recent progresses of DCN deployment and assesses the scenario where the O-OFDM transmission and switching technology is employed in the underlying transport plane. We discuss the key issues of the datacenter-oriented O-OFDM optical networks, and in particular, elaborate on a number of open issues and solutions including system interconnection architecture, routing and resource assignment, survivability, and energy-efficiency.
