  • This paper discusses American disability theater's representations of disability identity and disability identity politics. Dramatists John Belluso and Lynn Manning, among others, present characters with disabilities who experience oppressions at multiple, interlocking levels of domination on the basis of disability, race, and ethnicity. In Manning's Shoot, the black, blind hero iterates episodes in which he experienced discrimination and insults in encounters with whites who used derogatory racist words or belittled him and with some school children who taunted him for just being blind. This play, as in Manning's solo performance, Weights, presents narratives of a blind person traversing multiple locations of oppression in "a long litany of losses" in a white-dominated and ableist society. Belluso's Gretty Good Time similarly weaves together stories of disabled women, Gretty and Hideko, who bond together to resist the dominant ideology that reduces them into titillating commodities of mass consumption. Hideko's story serves the two-fold function of both affirming the specificity of her individual experience as an ethnic other and espousing the communal experience of stigmatization she shares with other disabled women like Gretty. In these plays, the intersection of the identity categories of disability, race, and ethnicity highlights the diversity of the body and the fluidity of boundaries, foregounding the specificity of disabled bodies, while at the same time overthrowing the hierarchical binarism between disabled and "normal" bodies.

  • This paper argues that the hard-boiled detective fiction is not a commercialized imitation of the classical detective novels but a revisionist detective fiction. Producing a radically different type of detectives from the traditional ones, the hard-boiled detective fiction provides a new, opposing paradigm of criminality, class, and masculinity to the classical detective fiction. Classical detective novels, through the heroic portrayal of high-class detectives capturing and punishing lower-class criminals, reassure class hierarchy. Hard-boiled detective novels, however, representing the ruling classes as the root of social oppression and political corruption, define the power elite as criminals. Whereas the classical detective fiction displays aristocratic masculinity, the hard-boiled detective fiction embodies working-class masculinity. The classical detective is generally represented as a genteel dilettante solving the mysteries of crimes, in his leisure time, through logical reasoning and scientific techniques. The hard-boiled detective, however, solves crimes by using violence and earns his living from catching criminals. The hard-boiled detective also maintains an absolute independence by keeping a distance from all forms of authority and connection. The representation of hard-boiled detective as a tough, rebellious, independent guy can be interpreted as a reaction to the advent of corporate capitalism and the rise of labor control in the 1920s.

  • The figures listed under the title of 'Photo Insert' in 『HanBangEuiYakGye』 No.2 are all those who were engaged in East Asian medicine, but they can be divided into several groups depending on the areas in which they were more focused. First, he served as a royal physician at the end of the Joseon Dynasty, or was an oriental medical doctor with outstanding medical skills during the family service. Second, he is an East Asian medicine doctor who established a school for Korean medicine education or conducted various academic activities. Third, he is an East Asian medical doctor who worked hard to lead a group of East Asian medical doctors by organizing Korean medical doctors. Looking at the reality of the oppression of ethnic medicine committed by the Japanese colonial government, they continued to seek a way to live in national medicine, which played a major role in continuing the existence of Korean medicine without destroying it. In this paper, we analyzed the 13 Korean medical doctors introduced in the "Photo Insertion" and examined the activities of modern and contemporary East Asian medical doctors.

  • Objectives: We intended to identify differences of general symptoms related to existence & nonexistence of uterine myoma. Methods: We surveyed 948 women from 35 to 45 years old who had received Korean oriental medical questionnaires about general symptom patterns and abdominal & pelvic ultrasonography at Kyung-Hee University medical center from May 2007 to October 2008. After we divided the women into two (uterine myoma or normal) groups by ultrasonography result, we compared general symptom patterns of the uterine myoma group with those of the normal group. Results: In relation to digestion pattern, appetite showed statistically significant difference between the normal and uterine myoma groups. In relation to evacuation pattern, stool frequency showed statistically significant difference between the normal and uterine myoma groups. In relation to psychologic pattern, difference in oppression in the chest & palpitation showed statistical significance between the groups. In relation to the other patterns, differences in throat discomfort & hypertonicity of nape neck showed statistical significance between the normal and uterine myoma groups (p<0.05). Conclusions: The result showed that prevalence of uterine myoma should be considered in respect to digestion pattern, evacuation pattern, and psychologic pattern. We need further study after increasing the size of the uterine myoma group and improvement of general symptom questionnaires.

  • The purpose of the study was to analyze the work clothes' clothing comfort and wearer mobility of painting workers with the consideration of the work environment features in the machine and shipbuilding industries in South Korea. A questionnaire survey was conducted for the study, which consisted of questions on the clothing comfort and wearer mobility aspects of painting work clothes by clothes types and body parts. The work clothes' clothing comfort and wearer mobility levels were scaled in 5 points i.e. 1(: very tight/very uncomfortable) to 5(: very slack/very comfortable). The painting work environmental hazardous features were considered as high impact levels of workplace temperature, oxygen deficiency, organic solvent, toxic gas factors while metal fragment factor only impacts 'low' in the painting processes with the findings throughout this study. Since the painting work consisted of surface washing and the spray and touch-up painting processes, which was carried out in an outdoor work place, the painting work clothes should meet high performance of waterproofing from the painting material and air permeability specially in summer as well as thermal performance in winter. The subjects painting workers' assessment of the existing work clothes' clothing oppression was in the levels between 3 (i.e. moderate) and 4 (i.e. comfortable) in a range of 1 to 5 points. The existing painting work clothes' wearer mobility was evaluated 'very uncomfortable' in all work clothes parts, especially, armhole length, biacromial breadth, sleeve length of the jumper; and body rise, waist, hip, thigh and knee circumferences of the pants.

  • According to the Sam-guk Sa-gi (History of three Kingdoms: Silla, Koguryo and Paeckje) tea was first brought into Korea by Kim Tae-ryeum, a diplomat, in 828 A.D. during the reign of king Hung-dot of Silla, and planted on the hill of Mt. Chi-ri. Afterwards, the tea trees were transplanted and cultivated by Buddists in many Buddist temples in southern provinces during the Silla and Koryo dynasties. People took much delight in drinking green tea, and specially the kings, buddist monks and nobilities of Silla and Koryo enjoyed drinking green tea. And eventually, the green tea became an indispensable part in all important ceremonies during the Koryo dynasty. After the Yi dynasty came into being, the dualistic philosophy of China was introduced and respected while buddist temples declined as a result of strong oppression by the ruling class. While temples were declined, the practice of drinking green tea was also declined. Nowadays we find many tea plants grow wild, which are seemed to be planted around buddist temples during the Koryo dynasty. Today, Korean people do not drink home made green tea. Instead, they like to take coffee, black tea and other tea products imported from foreign countries. Aa a result, Korea had to pay $ 520 thousand in 1969 to import foreign made tea and coffee. The natural conditions of southern provinces of Korea are very suitable in cultivating tea plants. If we develope the skill in producing good quality tea in Korea, we would be able to save the foreign exchanges that are being spent for importing foreign made tea products, and at the same time, we would be able to export our green tea to overseas. The quality of Korean green tea is as good as that of Japanese green tea. Green tea contains vitamin C while coffee and black tea do not contain it.

  • Objectives: We intended to identify factors related to the severity of hot flush of climacteric women from an East-West medical point of view. Methods: We surveyed 446 climacteric women who had received Korean oriental medical questionnaires about clinical symptom patterns and health medical examinations at Kyung-Hee University Medical Center over 1 year, from June 2007 to May 2008. Then, we compared hot flush with clinical symptom pattern and health medical examination result. Results: As the severity of hot flush increased, hypnagogic disorder in sleep pattern, abdominal gaseous distention in digestion pattern, tenesmus in evacuation pattern, yellow or reddish urine in voiding pattern, spontaneous sweating in sweating pattern, chest oppression in psychologic pattern, not-pulling-bedclothes in cold-heat pattern and mouth dryness in craniocervical symptom increased (p<0.05). In relation to digestion pattern, the severity of hot flush showed statistical significance according to prevalence of gastritis diagnosed by gastroscopy and upper GI series(p<0.01). In relation to voiding pattern, the severity of hot flush showed statistical significance according to prevalence of urine protein diagnosed by urinalysis (p<0.05). In relation to sweating, psychologic & cold-heat pattern, triiodothyronine (T3) increase and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) decrease were significantly correlated as the severity of hot flush increased (p<0.01). Conclusions: The result showed that hot flush of climacteric women had to be considered in respect of digestion disorder related to gastritis and sweating psychologic cold-heat disorder related to thyroid hormone.

  • Modern comics find their roots in caricatures, which have a basic element of comics as a combination of wrings and drawings. In three East Asian countries, new media, comics have been developed by joining modern arts and cartoons which is a news form of western comics. As modern comics have evolved according to situations of the three countries, they expand from the satire on the system, foreign invasions, and internal corruption to the enlightenment of the people. However, the criticism on the system lead to the oppression, and the imperialism in East Asian countries enforce the agitation, war engagement, propaganda of the colonialism on the comics. Current East Asian comics have been occupying the largest part in the world comics, and have their roots in the modern comics. So it is meaningful to investigate the characteristic of modern East Asian comics.

  • From a film esthetic point of view, this paper deals with all the sound elements which are speech, noise, and music for the signification of sound in Hitchcock's . The speech makes a mental image auditory through voice-over, and sometimes it has the indiscernibleness of life and death to be incarnate. This paper has demonstrated that the noise also can mark punctuation-narrative boundary besides visual techniques pointed out by Metz, and it cites the sound of falling water which completes shower scene, offsetting a scream in audience's mind. In the music, desire and oppression are symbolized and they are making a dissonance. Upon occasion, the coexistence of two chords represents duplicity in Norman-mother. Also, the music may disappear in the way of silence, being mummified in the time paused. Thus, the common filmic signification of sounds in can be called reconceptualization of the image.
