This study examined whether South Koreans' philanthropic behaviors were related to the factors of two theoretical frameworks. From the involvement perspective, the study argued that three types of involvement with a telethon may be linked to volunteering and charitable donation behaviors. At the collective level, collective-efficacy may also be related to such behaviors. The study asked 279 South Koreans to respond to a Web survey that used convenience sampling. Results found that after controlling for demographics and past volunteer experiences, cognitive and behavioral involvement and collective-efficacy were positively related to volunteering behaviors, but affective involvement was not related. Moreover, only behavioral involvement and collective-efficacy were positively related to charitable donation. These results suggest that researchers and practitioners for volunteering resources need to use effective programs and contents for such behaviors in order to enhance involvement and level of collective-efficacy among community members in times of disaster.
In the pandemic crisis, many governments implemented harsh interventions that might contradict democratic values and civil liberties. In Taiwan, the debate over whether or not to reveal personal information of infected persons to limit the coronavirus's spread poses the democratic dilemma between public health and civil liberties. This study examines whether and explains how Taiwan's people respond to the choice between individual privacy and collective security. We used survey data gathered in May 2020 to show that, first, the democratic values did not deter the pursuit of collective safety at the cost of civil liberty; rather, people with higher social trust were more likely to give up their civil liberties in exchange for public safety. Second, people who support democratic values and pursue collective security tend to avoid violating privacy by opposing the release of personal information. This study proves that democratic values do not necessarily threaten collective safety and that the pursuit of common good can co-exist with personal privacy.
A telephone survey was conducted in a metropolitan city in 2012 to examine people's credibility ratings of different media outlets, in particular, Weibo - one of the most popular social media platforms in China. Our findings suggest: First, people place more trust in traditional news media than in online sources by a significant margin. Second, demographic influences on media trust seem to be minimal. Only age and gender were related to some credibility measures. Third, Weibo use was not related to one's credibility perception toward traditional media but interestingly, Weibo use showed different impacts on people's evaluation of Weibo's credibility. Commenting frequency was negatively related to one's trust in Weibo, while retweeting frequency was positively related to one's trust in Weibo.
In 2008, Taiwan adopted a new mixed member system which is significantly different from the long-implemented SNTV-MMD system for the election of legislators. The new system cuts the number of legislative seats from 225 to 113, extends legislators' terms of office from three years to four, and most importantly, adopts a new mixed-member majoritarian (MMM) electoral system to replace the SNTV system for legislative elections. The election of legislators in 2008 was the first time that this new mixed electoral system was implemented in Taiwan. Mainstream literature continues to discuss the electoral impact on political parties and candidates by the new system while citizens' knowledge of the new system and its concomitant effects on citizens' behavior receive less attention. Worse still, almost all of the literature assumes that voters were fully aware of the operation and impact of the new electoral system and cast their ballots wisely. The purpose of this paper is to explore citizen's perceptions, participation and evaluation of this new system.
Fake news and disinformation provoked heated arguments during Taiwan's 2018 local election. Most significantly, concerns grew that Beijing was attempting to sway the island's politics armed with a new "Russian-style influence campaign" weapon (Horton, 2018). To investigate the speculated effects of the "onslaught of misinformation," an online survey with 1068 randomly selected voters was conducted immediately after the election. Findings confirmed that false news affected Taiwanese voters' judgment of the news and their voting decisions. More than 50% of the voters cast their votes without knowing the correct campaign news. In particular, politically neutral voters, who were the least able to discern fake news, tended to vote for the China-friendly Kuomintang (KMT) candidates. Demographic analysis further revealed that female voters tended to be more likely to believe fake news during the election period compared to male voters. Younger or lower-income voters had the lowest levels of discernment of fake news. Further analyses and the implications of these findings for international societies are deliberated in the conclusion.
This study aimed to investigate the associations between clothing consumption values and the ambivalent clothing consuming behavior of young female adults. To explain the ambivalent consuming behavior prevailing in the contemporary fashion market, five dimensional consumption values proposed by Sheth(1991) were adopted as explanatory factors, and fashion leadership and spending were included as moderating factors. Data collecting using written survey instrument yielded one hundred and seventy two complete responses from female consumers aged between 20 and 39. Factor analysis on clothing consumption values resulted in five dimensional structures of consumption values for the sample: expressive, epistemic, functional, social, and fashionable values. Among these, expressive, functional, and social values significantly affected ambivalent consuming behavior. The effect of expressive value was strong regardless of fashion innovativeness, opinion-leadership, and monthly income of consumers, however, the effects of epistemic, functional, and social values were changed depending on the moderating factors.

Cognizant of the role of the family in influencing health behaviors among its young members, especially during the time of COVID-19 in the Philippines where stay-at-home measures were in place from March 2020 until March 2022, this study sought to determine the predictive relationship of family relationship to COVID-19 preventive behavioral intention and pandemic fatigue among young Filipino undergraduates. A total of 1,665 undergraduate students participated in this cross-sectional online survey. Findings reveal that family cohesion significantly increases COVID-19 prevention behavioral intention among undergraduates. Moreover, students who report high levels of conflict in the family are less likely to comply with preventive behaviors and exhibit higher levels of pandemic fatigue.
In the age of continuous media change and the coexistence of multiple forms of media, the relationship between the public's media use and political participation is an urgent area of study. This paper makes use of large national sample surveys from 2002, 2011, and 2015, summarizes the change of the public's media use by descriptive statistics analysis, and finds that while the Internet has become an important communication channel, the use of Internet for political information and political participation is still overestimated. Compared to the weak impact of different media channels for political information on political participation, the frequency of media exposure and Internet use play a significant role in political participation. Because of the negative effect of the frequency of Internet use on political participation, the democratization function of the Internet needs to be treated with caution. This paper describes media use and its roles in contemporary China, analyzes the impact of media use on political participation, and extends the cross-cultural application of the theory of political communication.
