Development of a Broadband Self-recording Hydrophone

  • A broadband self-recording hydrophone was developed to conveniently assemble a hydrophone array for use in receiving underwater sound waves. A trigger device with an electromagnetic induction coupler was also developed to control the hydrophone's operation. Main configurations and specifications of the self-recording hydrophone are introduced in this paper. We present experiment results conducted in a water tank to examine the operating behavior of the hydrophone. Some advantages are discussed when the self-recording hydrophones are used to make up a hydrophone array.

  • One of the most important marketing strategies is how to solve customers' complaints. Under developing internet environment, it is possible to use internet multimedia consultant system to do cope with the problem. In this paper, we have realized the customer consulting system which is based on Linux as the operating system. Java is used as a programming language. With the use of the RTP(Real-time Transport protocol), the system provides picture and sound transactions between a consultant and customers in a real-time fashion.

Prediction and analysis of structural noise of a box girder using hybrid FE-SEA method

  • With the rapid development of rail transit, rail transit noise needs to be paid more and more attention. In order to accurately and effectively analyze the characteristics of low-frequency noise, a prediction model of vibration of box girder was established based on the hybrid FE-SEA method. When the train speed is 140 km/h, 200 km/h and 250 km/h, the vibration and noise of the box girder induced by the vertical wheel-rail interaction in the frequency range of 20-500 Hz are analyzed. Detailed analysis of the energy level, sound pressure contribution, modal analysis and vibration loss power of each slab at the operating speed of 140 km /h. The results show that: (1) When the train runs at a speed of 140km/h, the roof contributes more to the sound pressure at the far sound field point. Analyzing the frequency range from 20 to 500 Hz: The top plate plays a very important role in controlling sound pressure, contributing up to 70% of the sound pressure at peak frequencies. (2) When the train is traveling at various speeds, the maximum amplitude of structural vibration and noise generated by the viaduct occurs at 50 Hz. The vibration acceleration of the box beam at the far field point and near field point is mainly concentrated in the frequency range of 31.5-100 Hz, which is consistent with the dominant frequency band of wheel-rail force. Therefore, the main frequency of reducing the vibration and noise of the box beam is 31.5-100 Hz.   • High Quality CD, OAT audio requires that large amount of data. Currently, multi channel preference has been rapidly propagated among latest users. The MPEG(Moving Picture Expert Group) is provides data compression technology of sound and image system. The MPEG standard provides multi channel and 5.1 sounds, using the same audio algorithm as MPEG-l. And MPEG-2 audio is forward and backward compatible. The MDCT (Modified Discrete Cosine Transform) is a linear orthogonal lapped transform based on the idea of TDAC(Time Domain Aliasing Cancellation). In this paper, we proposed the micro-program type vector processor architecture a benefit in MDCT/IMDCT of MPEG-II AAC. And it's reduced operating coefficient by overlapped area to bind. To compare original algorithm with optimized algorithm that cosine coefficient reduced $0.5\%$multiply operating $0.098\%$ and add operating 80.58\%$. Algorithm test is used C-language then we designed hardware architecture of micro-programmed method that applied to optimized algorithm. This processor is 20MHz operation 5V.

Affective Design of Warning Sounds used in Windows Operating Systems (윈도우즈 운영체제를 중심으로 한 경고음의 감성공학적 설계)

  • In order to properly design warning sounds that are affectively suitable to computer users, warning sounds used in Windows operating system were analyzed in terms of their sound properties; frequency band, spectral characteristics and physical intensity. A total of 36 warning sounds (3*4*3) were generated and tested with respect to three experimental variables. Among 178 collected affective adjectives that are related to hearing and sounds, seven representative affective adjectives were abstracted by statistical grouping techniques. In the experiment, subjective preference tests were performed for the 36 warning sounds according to the seven affective factors. From the result, the affective factors were again grouped into three major factors and the 60dB boost-type warning sounds at the low frequency band were, in general, the most preferred. followed by the 70dB cut-type sounds at the middle frequency band. These warning sounds have a characteristic of boost power spectrum below 1000Hz frequency band and received good scores on simplicity, clarity and accurateness.

Infrasound Wave Propagation Characteristics in Korea (국내 인프라사운드 전파특성 연구)

  • Korea Institute of Geology Mining and Materials(KIGAM) cooperating with Southern Methodist University(SMU) has been operating seismo-acoustic array in Chul-Won area to discriminate man-made explosions from natural earthquakes since at the end of July 1999. In order to characterize propagation parameters of detected seismo-acoustic signal and to associate these signals as a blast event accompanying seismic and acoustic signals simultaneously it is necessary to understand infrasound wave propagation in the atmosphere. Two comparable Effective Sound Velocity Structures(ESVS) in atmosphere were constructed by using empirical model (MSISE90 and HWM93) and by aerological observation data of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) at O-San area. Infrasound propagation path computed by empirical model resulted in rare arival of refracted waves on ground less than 200km from source region. On the other hand Propagation paths by KMA more realistic data had various arrivals at near source region and well agreement with analyzed seismo-acoustic signals from Chul-Won data. And infrasound propagation in specific direction was very influenced by horizontal wind component in that direction. Linear travel time curve drawn up by 9 days data of the KMA in autumn season showed 335.6m/s apparent sound velocity in near source region. The propagation characteristics will be used to associate seismo-acoustic signals and to calculate propagation parameters of infrasound wave front.

Noise Generation Characteristic for Tunnel Construction Equipments (건설장비에 의한 터널작업의 소음환경 실태)

  • Workers engaged in construction works have been exposed to high levels of noise during their work in tunnels. Noise is one of the major health hazards for employees working in construction sites. The aim of this study is to evaluate the noise levels generating from tunneling equipments such as jumbo drills, backhoes, payloaders, shotcrete machines and service cars. Explosion and turbo fan noises were also monitored. A high precision sound level meter was introduced for measuring LAeq, LAFmax, LAFmin and LCpeak noises in 5 tunneling work sites that were located in Seoul, Kyunggi-do and Kangwon-do areas with NATM and shield methods. The highest noise was recorded by explosion(151.9 dB LCpeak) followed by jumbo drills of higher than 110 dB(A) LAeq. Backhoe normally generated 90~110 dB(A) LAeq while breaking work of rock showed additional around 5~15 dB(A). Noise exposure levels for payloader and shotcrete machine scored more than 90 dB(A) which might be a source of noise-induced hearing loss. Additional research in revealing noise levels from construction equipments operating in tunneling works may enhance the protection of workers who exposed to noise primarily at the sites.

  • The radiated noise from the automotive intake system should be predicted at the design stage. To this end, the precise measurement of in-duct acoustic source parameters of the intake system, i.e., the source strength and source impedance, is essential. Most of previous works on the measurement of acoustic source parameters were performed under a fixed engine speed condition. However, the requirement of vehicle manufacturer is the noise radiation pattern as a function of engine speed. In this study, the direct method was employed to measure the source parameters of engine intake system under a fixed engine speed and engine run-up condition. It was noted that the frequency spectra of source impedance hardly changes with varying the engine speed. Thus, it is reasonable to calculate the source strength under the engine run-up condition by assuming that source impedance is invariant with engine speed. Measured and conventional source models, i.e., constant pressure source, constant velocity source, and non-reflective source, were utilized to predict insertion loss and radiated sound pressure level. A reasonable prediction accuracy of radiated sound pressure level spectra from the intake system was given in the test vehicle when using the measured source characteristics which were acquired under the operating condition.

  • This work focuses on finding out the noise source and the method of reducing the noise level of LPG(liquefied petroleum gas) fuel injector. The noise of LPG injector in operating condition is due to the impact between valve and valve seat. This study shows that if the revolution of engine is increased, the noise of LPG injector will be more serious but it is not nearly affected by the increment of fuel pressure. The source and transmission paths of noise are identified through the analysis of noise generation mechanism and noise spectrum. The sound absorbing material is tested to verify its efficiency of sound absorption thor the LPG injector. The effect of noise reduction of absorbing material is remarkable when the engine speed is high. Consequently two methods of reducing the noise level are suggested from the identified results. The one is to equip the absorbing material on the outer side of injector and the other is to coat with a soft material or equip a soft ring on the surface of impact.

  • Recently DSP chips are widely used in high quality car audio to achieve high quality sound and to process various sound sources, e.g. navigation, cell phones. In this paper, we developed a set of design tools useful for developing high quality car audio systems using Philips' SAF7730 car audio chips. The tool is consist of the GUI(Graphic User Interface) program running on the Windows operating system and the interface board which performs data conversion between RS232C and I2C protocols. The developed system has been successfully applied to commecial car audio design.
