  • This study examined effects of the operating characteristics of a pump according to the rotational speed of a pump and the change in flow rate when a centrifugal pump operates under the following conditions: regulated flow rate, head, rotational speed, and specific speed of 0.7 m/min, 8 m, 1750 rpm, an 182 (m, ㎥/min, rpm), respectively. The pump in the experiment did not have a guide vane and was connected directly to the rim, so that the rotational speed of the volute pump in a spiral or volute casing increased by 100 rpm from 1350 to 1750 rpm. The result of the relationship between the H-Q, L-Q, and 𝜂-Q characteristics and the dimensionless performance characteristics, such as the head coefficient, power coefficient and efficiency were studied. The change in pump performance could be estimated depending on the increase in the number of revolutions. The maximum efficiency of the pump was 52% with 1450 rpm, 0.165 ㎥/min flux, and 4.73 m of lift. The efficiency reached 50% with a maximum of 1750 rpm, 0.183 ㎥/min of flux, and 6.72 m of lift. The efficiency curve on the performance characteristics of the lift versus flux curve became oval not a curve from a quadratic equation that passes through the starting point according to the similarity law of the pump. Finally, when the flux coefficient increased, the power coefficient increased and the lift coefficient decreased. When the flux coefficient was 0.08, the maximum efficiency was 52%. Therefore, the change in flux affects the driving characteristics.

  • The bearing clearance is influenced by shrink fit and thermal expansion during operation. The designer must take into account the reduction of clearance after installation to the interference fits, and thermal expansion must be considered. The purpose of this study is to grasp the internal clearance variation and behavior of a bearing which is a deep connected with fatigue life of bearing and performance of spindle through FEM(Finite Element Method). Finite element analysis is performed by using commercial code ANSYS according to variation of thermal condition and rotational speeds. This paper presents correct negative internal clearance according to temperature during operation. Furthermore, interrelation between thermal expansion and contraction are presented to maintain adequate contact force for three type of spindle system (HSK-A60, HSK-40E, HSK-32E). The influence of the centrifugal force and Internal clearance variation of bearing is studied to operating rotational speed.

  • A conventional centrifugal pump causes a drastic deterioration of air-water two-phase flow performances even at an air-water two-phase flow condition of inlet void fraction less than 10% in the range of relatively low water flow rate. Then we have developed a two-phase flow centrifugal pump which consists of a tandem arrangement of double rotating cascades and blades of outer cascade have higher outlet angle more than $90^{\circ}$. In design of the two-phase flow pump for various sized and operating conditions, similarity relations of geometric dimensions to hydraulic performances is very useful. The similarity relations of rotational speed, impeller diameter and blade height are investigated for the developed impeller in the present paper. As the results, the similarity law of rotational speed and impeller diameter is clarified experimentally even in two-phase flow condition. In addition, influences of blade height on air-water two-phase flow performances indicate a little difference from the similarity relations.

  • In centrifugal oil filters particles are forced to move toward the filter casing wall by centrifugal force in the rotating oil flow and the particles are trapped and removed on the filter paper installed at the wall. In the present study, flow field of oil and particle motion in a centrifugal oil filter has been numerically calculated in order to estimate the filtering efficiency for various operating conditions. Fluent code was used for the numerical calculations. Uncoupling the oil flow and the particle motion and the use of particle tracking trajectory enabled the estimation of filtering efficiency for various particle sizes, particle density and the filter rotational speed. Higher filtering efficiency was observed for heavier and larger particles as well as higher filter rotational speed. For the typical case of the particle density of $6000kg/m^3$ and the particle size of $10{\mu}m$ at 3500 RPM, the calculated filtering efficiency per passage was 0.31.

  • A 3D thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic model is developed to analyze the sealing performance of a notched mechanical seal applied in the reactor coolant pump. In the model, the generalized Reynolds equation, the energy equation coupled with notch heat balance equation, the heat conduction equations, and the deformation equations of the sealing rings are iteratively solved by the finite element method. The film pressure and temperature distribution are obtained, and the deformation of the sealing rings is revealed to study the mechanism of the notched mechanical seals. A parameterized study is conducted to analyze the sealing performance under different operating conditions. As a comparison, the sealing performance of non-notched seals is also studied. The results show that the hydrostatic effect is dominant in the load-carrying capacity of the fluid film due to the radial mechanical and thermal deformations. The notch can cool the fluid film and influence the thermal deformation of seal rings. The sealing performance is sensitive to the pressure difference, ambient temperature, and rotational speed. It is suggested to set the notches on the softer sealing rings to acquire the greater hydrodynamic effect. Compared with the non-notched, the notched end face holds a better lubrication performance, especially under lower rotational speed.

  • Condition Monitoring System (CMS) has been used to detect unexpected faults of wind turbine caused by the abrupt change of circumstances or the aging of its mechanical part. In fact, it is a very hard work to do regular inspection for its maintenance because wind turbine is located on the mountaintop or sea. The purpose of this study is to find out distribution patterns of vibration signals measured from the main mechanical parts of wind turbine according to its operation condition. To this end, acceleration signals of main bearing, gearbox, generator, wind speed, rotational speed, etc were measured through the long period more than 2 years and trend analyses on each signal were conducted as a function of the rotational speed. In addition, correlation analysis among the signals was done to grasp the relation between mechanical parts. As a result, the vibrations were dependent on the rotational speed of main shaft and whether power was generated or not, and their distributions at a specific rotational speed could be approximated to Weibull distribution. It was also investigated that the vibration at main bearing was correlated with vibration at gearbox each other, whereas vibration at generator should be dealt with individually because of generating mechanism. These results can be used for improving performance of CMS that early detects the mechanical abnormality of wind turbine.

  • The purpose is to evaluate the structural characteristics of 750 mm diameter injection spiral blades under various operating conditions. A fiber-glass reinforced polypropylene material was employed to the injection blades, and mechanical tests on two kinds of glass-reinforced polypropylene were performed to evaluate the mechanical properties and to select a suitable candidate material. Also, three kinds of spiral blade geometries were studied to observe the influence of fixing rods between blades. For this, structural analyses were conducted to understand the role of fixing rods under a range of rotating speed. In addition, modal analysis was performed to confirm the resonance in the operating speed range. One-way fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis was carried out to know its mechanical integrity under dangerous wind speed conditions. Through this work, the structural characteristics of the proposed spiral blade geometries were studied under various operating conditions, and the requirements of mechanical properties of blades were determined.

  • For a short time a pyre-starter should turn the blades of a turbine to the adequate rotational speed by a single operation. Through this process the pressures of the components of a propellant rise rapidly up to the operating point, and the components enter into a gas-generator. Combustion in the gas-generator occurs to keep the turbopumps working. In this research characteristic parameters of a pyre-starter which correspond to the required performance of the turbopump before the gas-generator starts to work were selected

  • The current trend in automotive finishing industry is to use more electrostatic rotating bell (ESRB) need space to their higher transfer efficiency. The flow physics related with the transfer efficiency is strongly influenced by operating parameters. In order to improve their high transfer efficiency without compromising the coating quality, a better understanding is necessary to the ESRB application of metallic basecoat painting for the automobile exterior. This paper presents the results from experimental investigation of the ESRB spray to apply water-borne painting. The visualization, the droplet size, and velocity measurements of the spray flow were conducted under the operating conditions such as liquid flow rate, shaping airflow rate, bell rotational speed, and electrostatic voltage setting. The optical techniques used in here were a microscopic and light sheet visualization by a copper vapor laser, and a phase Doppler particle analyzer (PDPA) system. Water was used as paint surrogate for simplicity. The results show that the bell rotating speed is the most important influencing parameter for atomization processes. Liquid flow rate and shaping airflow rate significantly influence the spray structure. Based on the microscopic visualization, the atomization process occurs in ligament breakup mode, which is one of three atomization modes in rotating atomizer. In the spray transport zone, droplets tend to distribute according to size with the larger drops on the outer periphery of spray. In addition, the results of present study provide detailed information on the paint spray structure and transfer processes.
