The Diagnostic Assessment of Hand Elevation Test in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Objective : The aim of this study is to establish the value of hand elevation test as a reproducible provocative test for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Methods : We had a prospective study of 45 hands of 38 patients diagnosed with CTS between April 2005 and February 2009. The diagnosis of CTS was based on the American Academy of Neurology clinical diagnostic criteria. Experimental and control group patients underwent Tinel's test, Phalen's test, carpal compression test and hand elevation test as provocative tests for CTS. Results : We used chi-square analysis to compare Tinel's test and Phalen's test, carpal compression test with hand elevation test. The sensitivity and specificity of the hand elevation test is 86.7% and 88.9% each. Tinel's test had 82.2% sensitivity and 88.9% specificity. Phalen's test had 84.4% sensitivity and 86.7% specificity. Carpal compression test had 84.4% sensitivity 82.2% specificity. Comparisons of sensitivity and specificity between hand elevation test and Tinel's test, Phalen's test, and carpal compression test had no statistically significant differences. To compare the diagnostic accuracies of four tests, the area under the non-parametric receiver operating character curve was applied. Conclusion : The hand elevation test has higher sensitivity and specificity than Tinel's test, Phalen's test, and carpal compression test. Chi-square statistical analysis confirms the hand elevation test is not ineffective campared with Tinel's test, Phalen's test, and carpal compression test.

횡류형 터빈을 적용한 수직축 풍력발전시스템의 성능평가를 위한 실험 연구 (An Experimental Study for the Performance Analysis of a Vertical-type Wind Power Generation System with a Cross-flow Wind Turbine)

  • 본 최근 성장하고 있는 해상 풍력의 실험연구에서 풍동시험이 수직형 횡류 풍력발전시스템의 성능을 조사하기 위해 실시되었다. 풍동의 시험 부분은 제한된 크기로 인해 실제 풍력 발전의 입구 안내 베인을 약 1/5로 축소시켰고, 터빈 임펠러의 지름을 모형 임펠러의 1/2로 감소시켰다. 임펠러 블레이드 갯수는 풍력 발전 시스템의 출력에 대한 또 다른 중요한 변수이기 때문에 8개와 16개로 변경하여 시험하였다. 실험 분석 결과, 모형 풍력 터빈의 출력 제동력은 정격 풍속 12m/s에서 블레이드 갯수가 8개 보다 16개일 때 82% 출력이 증가된 278와트로 측정되었고, 정격 제동력은 정격 작동 조건에서 3.9kW로 계산되었다.

Thrust force and base bending moment acting on a horizontal axis wind turbine with a high tip speed ratio at high yaw angles

  • Onshore wind turbines may experience substantially different wind loads depending on their working conditions, i.e. rotation velocity of rotor blades, incoming freestream wind velocity, pitch angle of rotor blades, and yaw angle of the wind-turbine tower. In the present study, aerodynamic loads acting on a horizontal axis wind turbine were accordingly quantified for the high tip speed ratio (TSR) at high yaw angles because these conditions have previously not been adequately addressed. This was analyzed experimentally on a small-scale wind-turbine model in a boundary layer wind tunnel. The wind-tunnel simulation of the neutrally stratified atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) developing above a flat terrain was generated using the Counihan approach. The ABL was simulated to achieve the conditions of a wind-turbine model operating in similar inflow conditions to those of a prototype wind turbine situated in the lower atmosphere, which is another important aspect of the present work. The ABL and wind-turbine simulation length scale factors were the same (S=300) in order to satisfy the Jensen similarity criterion. Aerodynamic loads experienced by the wind-turbine model subjected to the ABL simulation were studied based on the high frequency force balance (HFFB) measurements. Emphasis was put on the thrust force and the bending moment because these two load components have previously proven to be dominant compared to other load components. The results indicate several important findings. The loads were substantially higher for TSR=10 compared to TSR=5.6. In these conditions, a considerable load reduction was achieved by pitching the rotor blades. For the blade pitch angle at 90°, the loads were ten times lower than the loads of the rotating wind-turbine model. For the blade pitch angle at 12°, the loads were at 50% of the rotating wind-turbine model. The loads were reduced by up to 40% through the yawing of the wind-turbine model, which was observed both for the rotating and the parked wind-turbine model.

  • An experimental work was conducted to develop an optimum operating system of various hay drying systems ; sun-drying with long hay, sun-drying after chopping, sun-drying after crushing, heated air drying after chopping using batch-type dryer and heated air drying after crushing using tunnel-type dryer. Seombody having 60 cm long and initial moisture content of approximately 79 % in wet basis was used for the experiment. The criteria selected for determining the optimum operating condition were the drying performance rate, the production cost and quality of dried matter of each drying systems. The result of this study are summarized as follows : 1. Drying characteristics of leaves of long stem hay, chopped seombody and crushed one were obtained by maintaining the oven temperature at 70 degrees centigrade. The required drying times for various samples to approximately 15% moisture content in wet basis were about 50 min .for leaves ; 160 min. for crushed hay ; 250 min. for chopped hay ; 340min. for ling hay and more than 360 min .for stems. The drying time of crushed hay was required about 50 % of that for the uncrushed long hay. Such a significant difference of drying of time between the leaf and long stem may indicate that an effective drying of seombody may not be achieved unless any kind of special process treatment for the whole hay is undertaken. 2. In each individual drying system, the following conclusions were drawn: a. After 8 days sun-drying on concrete floor under good days with average tempe?rature at $256{\circ}C$ and relative humidity at 55% at 2 P.M., the moisture content of long hay was still above 25 5'~ and the leaf loss during drying caused by wind and rough handling was more than 50 ~G. b. It was possible to dry the chopped seombody by sun-drying down to about 10 % moisture content within 5 days, however, a stock of heat and discolouration phenomena were observed during the drying, which may be due to the increased deposit-density by chopping, resulting in lowering the quality of the dried product. c. Sun-drying for the crushed material by hay-conditioner was required about 4 days to reduce the moisture content to about 10 %, keeping the quality of dried product at good grade. o. The optimum deposit-depth of the chopped seombody in the batch-type dryer used was about 28cm with about 42kg/hr of drying performance rate. However, it was necessary to overturn the materials between the upper and lower layers in order to obtain a good quality of dried product. d. The drying performance rate by the tunnel-type drier was highest among those of drying systems tested, giving the rate of approximately 400kg/day. 3. On reviewing the individual drying system for seombody, it was possible to draw conclusion that the best system was tunnel drying with the crushed seombody as far as the performance rate was concerned. However, the methods gives the highest operational cost. The system for the lowest operational cost with good quality of dried product was the sun-drying with the crushed material. Accordingly, it may be recommended that the system of sun-drying for the crushed seombody may be the most feasible system presently applicable to farm-level operation.

도로터널 반횡류환기시스템에서 급배기 포트개도 및 화재시 운영방안에 관한 수치해석적 연구 (Numerical Study on the Supply and Exhaust Port Size and Fire Management Method in the Semi-transverse Ventilation System for Road Tunnel)

  • 도로터널에 적용하는 반횡류환기방식은 터널의 전연장에 걸쳐서 단위길이당 풍량이 균일하게 될 수 있도록 포트의 개도 조정이 필수적이다. 그러나 현재 국내에서 운영중인 터널의 경우에는 설계시 이에 대한 고려가 적절히 이루어지지 못하고 있는 실정이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 개도계산을 위한 프로그램을 개발하고 반횡류환기방식의 터널에서 포트의 운영방안을 제시하였다. 연구결과, 포트의 개도는 급기방식의 덕트에서는 환기소측에서 덕트의 말단(bulk head)쪽으로 갈수록 증가하였다가 감소하는 경향을 가지며, 최소 개도는 56% 정도로 나타나고 있다. 또한 배기방식에서는 환기소측이 15% 정도로 가장 작고 bulk head 쪽으로 갈수록 증가하는 경향을 보이고 있다. 화재시 300 m 구간의 배연풍량을 검토한 결과, 포트사이즈를 조정하지 않는 경우와 급기방식으로 포트사이즈을 조정한 경우에는 터널중앙부의 배연량이 각각 8.1%와 12.5%로 터널중앙부의 배연풍량이 저조한 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 반횡류환기방식의 터널에서는 평상시 환기효율이 저하하더라도 배연시 균일한 풍량을 얻을 수 있도록 포트의 개도를 설정하여 운영하는 것이 반드시 필요한 것으로 판단된다.

터널 경계부 휘도수준에 따른 운전자 연령대별 안전수준 비교 (Comparison of Safety Level between Driver's Ages by Threshold Zone Luminance Level of Vehicular Traffic Tunnel)

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to suggest a basis for setting appropriate safety goals specifically related to the threshold zone luminance in a vehicular traffic tunnel. METHODS : In the test, drivers were divided into two groups. One group consisted of all drivers (average drivers) group with an age ratio of drivers holding domestic driver's license and driver group by age to produce threshold zone luminance in the tunnel. The threshold zone luminance produced as a result was used to analyze how it affects the safety level of each driver group and provide a basis for setting an appropriate safety criterion that can be used to determine threshold zone luminance. We used test equipment, test conditions, and ananalysis of threshold zone luminance identical to that reported by ChoandJung(2014) but the values of adaptation luminance in our analys is were expanded to range from100 to $10,000cd/m^2$. RESULTS : Adaptation luminance and threshold zone luminance are found to be related by a quadratic function. The threshold zone luminance needed by older drivers to ensure a certain safety level is significantly higher than that for drivers of other age brackets when adaptation luminance increases. 56% of older drivers are at an increased risk of an accident at the same luminance for which the safety level of average drivers is 75%. The safety level that can be achieved for older drivers increases to above 60% when threshold zone luminance level is set with the goal of attaining a safety level of more than 85% for average drivers. The safety level that can be attained for average drivers is above 90% when the threshold zone luminance is high enough to ensure over 75% in the safety level of older drivers. Results of this study are applicable to highways and others whose designed speed is 100 km/h. CONCLUSIONS : Threshold zone luminance determined on the basis of drivers having average visual ability is of limited value as a performance standard for ensuring the safety of older drivers. Hence, safety level for older drivers should be considered separately from safety levels for drivers with an average ability to avoid risk. Upward adjustment of older drivers' safety level in the process of determining appropriate threshold zone luminance in a vehicular traffic tunnel may bring both tangible and intangible benefit as a result of reducing accidents. However, there is an associated dollar cost arising from installing and operating lights. As a result, the economic impact of these trade-offs should also be considered.

TBM 운전조건을 고려한 스포크형 쉴드TBM의 굴진모사 연구 (Study on Driving Simulation of Spoke-type Shield TBM Considering Operation Conditions)

  • 본 연구에서는 개별요소법을 사용하여 스포크형 쉴드TBM의 굴진을 모사하였다. 지반에 대해 수평응력계수를 사용하여 깊이에 따른 수평응력 증가를 모사하였고 TBM의 커터헤드에서 발생하는 토크를 기준으로 운전 조건을 부여하여 운전 범위 내에서 굴진을 하도록 설정하였다. 즉, 커터헤드에서 발생하는 토크의 값이 주어진 운전 조건을 넘어서는 경우 굴진속도를 일정하게 줄이고 반대로 운전 조건보다 낮은 경우에는 굴진 속도를 높이는 방안을 고려하였다. 이때 굴진속도 변경에는 운전자의 검토 시간을 고려하여 최소 변경 가능 요건을 부여하고 굴진 조건에 따라 이를 변경 가능하도록 하였다. 이러한 조건을 사용하기 위하여 사용자 프로그램을 별도로 작성하였으며, 결과를 통해 사전에 입력한 운전 범위 내에서 굴진 해석이 가능하였다.

RANS simulation of cavitation and hull pressure fluctuation for marine propeller operating behind-hull condition

  • Simulations of cavitation flow and hull pressure fluctuation for a marine propeller operating behind a hull using the unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS) are presented. A full hull body submerged under the free surface is modeled in the computational domain to simulate directly the wake field of the ship at the propeller plane. Simulations are performed in design and ballast draught conditions to study the effect of cavitation number. And two propellers with slightly different geometry are simulated to validate the detectability of the numerical simulation. All simulations are performed using a commercial CFD software FLUENT. Cavitation patterns of the simulations show good agreement with the experimental results carried out in Samsung CAvitation Tunnel (SCAT). The simulation results for the hull pressure fluctuation induced by a propeller are also compared with the experimental results showing good agreement in the tendency and amplitude, especially, for the first blade frequency.

Performance prediction of horizontal axis marine current turbines

  • In this study, hydrodynamic performance of a 400 mm diameter horizontal axis marine current turbine model was tested in a cavitation tunnel with 1.21 m x 0.8 m cross-section for over a range of tip speed ratios. Torque and thrust data, as well as cavitation visualizations, for certain operating conditions were acquired. Experimental results indicated that the turbine can be exposed to significant amount of sheet and cloud cavitation over the blades along with vortex cavitation at the blade tips. Inception and distribution of cavitation along the blades of the model turbine were then modelled numerically for design operating conditions using a vortex lattice method. The method was also applied to a turbine tested previously and obtained results were compared with the data available. The comparison between simulation results and experimental data showed a slight difference in terms of span-wise extent of the cavitation region. The cloud and tip vortex cavity observed in experiments cannot be modelled due to the fact that the VLM lacks the ability to predict such types of cavitation. Notwithstanding, the use of such prediction methods can provide a reasonably accurate approach to estimate, therefore take the hydrodynamic effects of cavitation into account in design and analysis of marine current turbines.
