The crude methanol extract of the roots of Achyranthes aspera Linn. was investigated for its possible antinociceptive, diuretic and neuropharmacological activities in animal models. At the dose of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight, the extract showed a significant antinociceptive effect in acetic acid induced-writhing in mice comparable to that produced by diclofenac sodium, used as standard drug. The crude extract produced significant diuretic effect at the dose of 500 mg/kg of body weight comparable to that produced by furosemide, used as standard drug. The extract also potentiated significantly the pentobarbital induced sleeping time in mice; decreased the open field score in open field test, decreased the number of hole crossed from one chamber in the hole cross test and decreased the head dip responses. The obtained results provide a support for the use of this plant in traditional medicine and its further investigation.
This study was performed to evaluate the effects of Jowiseungchungtang and fluoxetine in the chronic mild stress(CMS) model of depression in rats. Chronic exposure to mild unpredictable stress was found to depress the consumption of sucrose solution in rats for 5 weeks. These CMS-treated rats were stratified into Jowiseungchungtang group, fluoxetine group and vehicle group. And control rats were also stratified into other CMS-treated group. The change of the consumption of sucrose solution was measured, and open field test were performed to investigate the anti-depression effect of Jowiseungchungtang and fluoxetine. The results were as follows : 1. The consumption of sucrose solution was significantly reversed in Jowiseungchungtang-treated group at 7 week, but there was no significant change in other groups. 2. CMS schedule decreased body weight. Jowiseungchungtang group and fluoxetine group showed significant decrease of body weight after 6 weeks. 3. In open field test, Jowiseungchungtang group and fluoxetine group showed no significant change of exploratory activity.
Ethanol consumption causes psychomotor alterations. Hovenia Semen seu Fructus (HS), widely distributed in Korea, China, and Japan, has been reported to have beneficial effects on acute alcohol-induced liver injury. The present study sought to assess the effects of HS extract on ethanol-induced psychomotor alterations in rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were orally (p.o.) given ethanol (4 g/kg) (ethanol group) to induce psychomotor alterations. A separate group (HS-treated groups), were treated with different dosages of HS (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg, p.o.), 30 minutes before ethanol treatment. The control group received only the vehicle (saline). Ethanol-induced psychomotor alterations were evaluated in the open-field, rota-rod, hanging wire, and cold swimming test. In addition, blood ethanol and acetaldehyde concentrations were also measured. Behavioral evaluations and blood analysis were carried out 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8 hours after ethanol administration. Pre-treatment of HS ameliorated ethanol-induced alterations in the open-field, rota-rod, and cold swimming test, significantly evident in 2 and 4 hours after ethanol treatment. These improvements coincided with decrease in blood ethanol and acetaldehyde concentration. Based on these results, the present study suggests that HS may have ameliorating effects against ethanol-induced psychomotor alterations.
This study was undertaken to invesigate the effect of early nutritional deprivation and environment on neurotransmitter concentrations and behavior in later life. The restoring process of rats fed foods ad libitum after 50% restriction of the casein or the Korean diet during the prenatal and/or the lactating periods was observed. There were two rearing conditions, isolated and enriched, after weaning. Behavioral development was measured by the Y- shaped water maze and the open field test. The neurotransmitters were analyzed after sacrifice at the age of 21 weeks. The results are summarized as follows. 1) The body weight impairment by dietary restriction during the prenatal and lactating periods could be restored within 18 weeks after weaning in case of living in a classical cage. The effect of quantitative restriction was bigger in the Korean diet than in the casein diet. 2) The brain weight was decreased by nutritional deprivation. Environmental enrichment increased it slightly. 3) The concentration of neurotransmitters, norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin, were not shown any traces of the dietary restriction at the age of 21 weeks. 4) In the maze test, the deprived rats made more errors than the nourished and the rats fed the Korean diet more than those fed the cascin dict. The environmental enrichment could decrease the number of errors. 5) In the open field test, the dietary deprived groups showed less reaction time, more squares entered in the field, and less number of fecal boli than the nourished among the environmentally isolated rats. However, rats living in the enriched cage without experience of nutritional stress showed the lowest emotionality and the elevated exploratory activity.
Structure-borne noise is known to dominate internal running noise levels in open field. In this paper vibration isolation characteristics of floors are investigated to see their effect on the internal running noise. By using the analysis and test results of test specimen of small size, internal running noise level of complete train is estimated. Analysis results show that soft rubber as a vibration isolator has the most favorable effect on the inside running noise.

We present test results of time-series CCD photometry to investigate the photometric precision of the BOAO (Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory) 1.8m telescope. A well-known field of the old open cluster M67, which includes two pulsating blue stragglers and two W UMa type binaries, was monitored for 3.5 hours on February 22, 1996. We have collected 148 V frames and 3 B frames. Photometric noises which consist mainly of photon noise and scintillation noise, were lowered down to about 1.9 mmag for stars of $10.\;^m5$ in M67 with exposure time of 20 seconds. From the C-M diagram for M67, a number of observational properties were derived; E(B-V) = 0.03, (V-Mv)o = 9.6, Age = 4 Gyr. We obtained light curves for four known variable stars and confirmed their variational characteristics. The pulsating blue stragglers show a low amplitude (about 0.01 mag) of light variation.
Due to the needs of design optimization and productivity for modernized Korean traditional house, standardization of Korean traditional building components is proceeding by BIM (Building Information Modeling). Currently, most of BIM software support object-based parametric modeling. By means of parameterized Korean traditional building components, the shape and assembly relation can be controlled. Although IFC(ISO/PAS 16739), which is an international standard in the AEC field, has been developed for information exchange among BIM software, IFC and other existing common data formats cannot be exchangeable parametric information. For the exchangeable parametric information within IFC, the authors defined meta-data by using Pset(Property-Set). The authors analyzed results about interoperability test in Revit $Architecture^{TM}$, $ArchiCAD^{TM}$ and Digital $Project^{TM}$. In order to solve found problems, the authors developed a translator to improve interoperability among BIM software.
The present study was designed to investigate the effect Hypericum Perforatum (HP), on behavioral changes, corticosterone, TNF-${\alpha}$ levels and tryptophan metabolism and disposition in bilateral ovariectomized rats compared to $17{\alpha}$-ethinylestradiol. Behavioral analysis by measuring immobility time in forced swimming test and open field test, serum and hippocampal corticosterone and TNF-${\alpha}$ along with hippocampal kynurenine/tryptophan ratio were determined in mature ovariectomized rats treated orally either by HP at three different doses 125, 250, and 500 mg/kg/day or by $17{\alpha}$-ethinylestradiol $30{\mu}g/kg/day$ for 30 days. Ovariectomized rats showed significant increase in immobility time in the forced swimming test. Along with elevation in serum and hippocampal TNF-${\alpha}$ and corticosterone levels associated with significant increase in hippocampal kynurenine/tryptophan ratio. Immobility time in the forced swimming test was decreased in rats treated by different doses of HP in a dose dependent manner and $17{\alpha}$-ethinylestradiol with no concomitant changes in the open field test. Only Rats treated with HP exhibited significant decrease in the elevated serum and hippocampal TNF-${\alpha}$ and corticosterone, which couldn't explain the associated insignificant effect on hippocampaus kynurenine/tryptophan ratio in comparison to ovariectomized untreated rats. It is concluded that increased tryptophan metabolism toward kynurenine secondary to elevated corticosterone and TNF-${\alpha}$ might be one of the pathohphysiological mechanisms that could explain depression like state observed in this rat model. Further, the observed attenuating effect of HP on TNF-${\alpha}$ and corticosterone could contribute in its antidepressant effect in this animal model by other ways than their effects on tryptophan-kynurenine metabolism pathway.
This study was performed to evaluate the effects of Quibitang in the chronic mild stress(CMS) model of depression in rats. Chronic exposure to mild unpredictable stress was found to depress the consumption of sucrose solution in rats for 8 weeks. These CMS-treated rats were stratified into Quibitang gruop and saline group. And control rats were also stratified into Quibitang group and saline group. The change of the consumption of sucrose solution and the body weight were measured, and open field test, elevated startle response and plus maze test were performed, to investigate the anti-depression effect of Quibitang. The results were as follows: 1. The consumption of sucrose solution was significantly reversed in Quibitang-treated group at 9th, 11th, 12th week, but there was no significant change at 10th week 2. CMS schedule decreased body weight. CMS-treated groups showed decrease of body weight after 5 weeks. After 10 weeks, Quibitang group showed lower body weight than saline group in CMS-treated groups 3. In open field test, Quibitang group showed significant difference of locomotion, latency. 4. In elevated startIe test, Quibitang group showed no significant change of startle response. 5. In plus maze test, Quibitang group showed no significant change of plus maze-time and plus maze-error.
Objectives Ketamine has been reported to have antidepressant effects or psychotomimetic effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the behavioral effects of ketamine treatment at various sub-anesthetic doses in adolescent and adult naïve mice. Methods In each experiment for adolescent and adult mice, a total of 60 male Institute of Cancer Research mice were randomly divided into 6 groups, which were intraperitoneally treated with physiological saline, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 mg/kg ketamine for consecutive 3 days. At 1 day after last injection, the locomotor and depressive-like behaviors were evaluated in mice, using open field test (OFT) and forced swim test (FST), respectively. Results In case of adolescent mice, ketamine dose was negatively correlated with total distance traveled in the OFT (Spearman's rho = -0.27, p = 0.039). In case of adult mice, we found significant positive correlation between ketamine dose and duration of immobility in the FST (Spearman's rho = 0.45, p < 0.001). Immobility time in the 50 mg/kg ketamine-treated mice was significantly higher compared to the saline-treated mice (Dunnett's post-hoc test, p = 0.012). Conclusions We found that the repeated treatment with ketamine could decrease the locomotor or prolong the duration of immobility in mice as the dose of ketamine increased. Our findings suggest that sub-anesthetic doses of ketamine might induce schizophrenia-like negative symptoms but not antidepressant effects in naïve laboratory animals.
