STEPSTONE is a joint industry-university project to create open source technology that would enable the scalable, "friction-free" integration of device-based healthcare solutions into enterprise systems using a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Specifically, STEPSTONE defines a first proposal to a Service Oriented Device Architecture (SODA) framework, and provides for initial reference implementations. STEPSTONE also intends to encourage a broad community effort to further develop the framework and its implementations. In this paper, we present SODA, along with two implementation proposals of SODA's device integration. We demonstrate the ease by which SODA was used to develop an end-to-end personal healthcare monitoring system. We also demonstrate the ease by which the STEPSTONE system was extended by other participants - Washington State University - to include additional devices and end user interfaces. We show clearly how SODA and therefore SODA devices make integration almost automatic, replicable, and scalable. This allows telehealth system developers to focus their energy and attention on the system functionality and other important issues, such as usability, privacy, persuasion and outcome assessment studies.

Recently, there has been growing interest in public participation GIS (Geographic Information System) technology that enables spontaneous public response to increasingly frequent flood and drought events. Accordingly, social and economic demands are increasing on portal services that are designed to help cope with natural hazards such as earthquakes. By focusing on a specific hazard, urban flood, this study designed a prototype of a disaster response portal and its service system. The community map developed in this study is focused on prevention and mitigation of the urban flood damage by analyzing the vulnerable areas, and providing effective means to inspect the roads and sewer systems. By considering the compatibility with VGI (Volunteered Geographic Information) portals, the study created a system environment by employing universally used open-source software programs such as Apache Tomcat, GeoServer, GeoNetwork, and PostgreSQL/PostGIS.

Three kinds of typical practices to reflect the values of Agile Development Methodology were selected from a previous study. Those were Communicate using Web 2.0 collaboration tools, test-driven development (TDD, Test-Driven Development) method is adopted, and refactoring. In this study, we set up a hypothesis that the adoption of TDD project will make user satisfaction is higher. Select 100 sample projects from SourceForge(sourceforge.net), the most popular open source hosting site, the criteria is we can be determined whether operate in the project (developer least 7 people, bugs can occur more than 100, created the project since 2000). To determine whether the use of automated development tools xUnit of TDD through the CVS and SVN log analysis. Using data from the FLOSSmole and to evaluate the user experience of the project. User satisfaction of each project Rating, bug fix cycle, downloads and pageviews. Through this study, correlates of whether TDD adoption and user satisfaction, we will suggest a reflected the Agile practices new open source development methodology. As a result, it contributes to increase the maturity of the open source community.
Bioinformatics education can be defined as the teaching and learning of how to use software tools, along with mathematical and statistical analysis, to solve biological problems. Although many resources are available, most students still struggle to understand even the simplest sequence alignment algorithms. Applying visualizations to these topics benefits both lecturers and students. Unfortunately, educational software for visualizing step-by-step processes in the user experience of sequence alignment algorithms is rare. In this article, an educational visualization tool for biological sequence alignment is presented, and the source code is released in order to encourage the collaborative power of open-source software, with the expectation of further contributions from the community in the future. Two different modules are integrated to enable a student to investigate the characteristics of alignment algorithms.
We collected zooplankton from May to October, 2011, with the aim of understanding the zooplankton community distribution and food web interaction between the open water and littoral (aquatic plants) zones in two small reservoirs with different land covers (Sobudang, Myeongdong). Small-sized reservoirs are more abundant in South Korea, and a total of 51 and 65 species of zooplankton were identified at the two small reservoir (Sobudang and Myeongdong), where zooplankton densities were more abundant in the littoral zone than in the open water zone. Cladocerans and copepods densities were also higher in the littoral zone, in contrast, rotifers showed higher densities in the open water zone (t-test, P/0.05). Epiphytic zooplankton dominated at the littoral zone (Lecane, Monostyla, Alona and Chydorus) because aquatic plants provided refuge spaces for attachment. Some rotifers (e.g. Brachionus, Keratella and Polyarthra) were more abundant in the open water zone because of their small size, which might help them to go unnoticed by predators. In two-way ANOVA, rotifers related to two reservoirs or habitat space (littoral zone and open water zone), but cladocerans and copepods showed a statistically significant relationship on only two reservoirs. The results of stable isotope analysis showed that zooplankton in the littoral zone tended to depend on organic matter attached to aquatic plants as a food source, which indicates the avoidance of competition of zooplankton with other macro-invertebrates (e.g. Damselfly larva, Cybister brevis and Neocardina denticulate). As a result, zooplankton community distribution is determined by not only habitat space (aquatic plant zone and open water zone) but also by food source (phytoplankton).
A modeling system that can consider the overall water environment and be used to integrate hydrology, water quality, and aquatic ecosystem on a watershed scale is essential to support decision-making in integrated water resources management (IWRM). In adapting imported models for evaluating the unique water environment in Korea, a platform perspective is becoming increasingly important. In this study, a modeling platform is defined as an ecosystem that continuously grows and provides sustainable values through voluntary participation- and interaction-of all stakeholders- not only experts related to model development, but also model users and decision-makers. We assessed the conceptual values provided by the IWRM modeling platform in terms of openness, transparency, scalability, and sustainability. I We also reviewed the technical aspects of functional and spatial integrations in terms of socio-economic factors and user-centered multi-scale climate-forecast information. Based on those conceptual and technical aspects, we evaluated potential modeling platforms such as Source, FREEWAT, Object Modeling System (OMS), OpenMI, Community Surface-Dynamics Modeling System (CSDMS), and HydroShare. Among them, CSDMS most closely approached the values suggested in model development and offered a basic standard for easy integration of existing models using different program languages. HydroShare showed potential for sharing modeling results with the transparency expected by model user-s. Therefore, we believe that can be used as a reference in development of a modeling platform appropriate for managing the unique integrated water environment in Korea.
This study describes how to build a security control system using an open source big data solution so that private companies can build an overall security control infrastructure. In particular, the infrastructure was built using the Elastic Stack, one of the free open source big data analysis solutions, as a way to shorten the cost and development time when building a security control system. A comparative experiment was conducted. In addition, as a result of comparing and analyzing the functions, convenience, service and technical support of the two solution, it was found that the Elastic Stack has advantages in the security control of Big Data in terms of community and open solution. Using the Elastic Stack, security logs were collected, analyzed, and visualized step by step to create a dashboard, input large logs, and measure the search speed. Through this, we discovered the possibility of the Elastic Stack as a big data analysis solution that could replace Splunk.
Microalgal biotechnology has gained prominence because of the ability of microalgae to produce value-added products including biodiesel through photosynthesis. However, carbon and nutrient source is often a limiting factor for microalgal growth leading to higher input costs for sufficient biomass production. Use of municipal wastewater as a low cost alternative to grow microalgae as well as to treat the same has been demonstrated in this study using mini raceway open ponds. Municipal wastewater was collected after primary treatment and microalgae indigenous in the wastewater were encouraged to grow in open raceways under optimum conditions. The mean removal efficiencies of TN, TP, COD-$_{Mn}$, $NH_3$-N after 6 days of retention time was 80.18%, 63.56%, 76.34%, and 96.74% respectively. The 18S rRNA gene analysis of the community revealed the presence of Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus obliquus as the dominant microalgae. In addition, 16S rRNA gene analysis demonstrated that Rhodobacter, Luteimonas, Porphyrobacter, Agrobacterium, and Thauera were present along with the microalgae. From these results, it is concluded that microalgae could be used to effectively treat municipal wastewater without aerobic treatment, which incurs additional energy costs. In addition, municipal wastewater shall also serve as an excellent carbon and nitrogen source for microalgal growth. Moreover, the microalgal biomass shall be utilized for commercial purposes.

The rapid development of smartphone technologies have resulted in the evolution of mobile botnets. The implications of botnets have inspired attention from the academia and the industry alike, which includes vendors, investors, hackers, and researcher community. Above all, the capability of botnets is uncovered through a wide range of malicious activities, such as distributed denial of service (DDoS), theft of business information, remote access, online or click fraud, phishing, malware distribution, spam emails, and building mobile devices for the illegitimate exchange of information and materials. In this study, we investigate mobile botnet attacks by exploring attack vectors and subsequently present a well-defined thematic taxonomy. By identifying the significant parameters from the taxonomy, we compared the effects of existing mobile botnets on commercial platforms as well as open source mobile operating system platforms. The parameters for review include mobile botnet architecture, platform, target audience, vulnerabilities or loopholes, operational impact, and detection approaches. In relation to our findings, research challenges are then presented in this domain.
The purpose of this study was to investigate school dietitians' use of processed and packaged foods in Incheon. This study was carried out through a questionnaire and the subjects were 203 school dietitians in Incheon. The results are summarized as follows. Dairy product was the processed and packaged food used most frequently by the subjects for school lunch. Most subjects used processed and packaged foods for school lunch once or twice per week. The first criteria for their choosing processed and packaged foods was manufacturing company. Also major reason for their using processed and packaged foods for school lunch was saving cooking time, easy purchase, hygienical packing and less garbage. The most common information source on processed and packaged foods for school lunch was promotion of food company. The subjects checked labelling of processed and packaged foods in order of open-date, manufacturer, origin of product, nutrition facts, ingredients and food additives. Some results were significantly different among the subjects by employment school, type of meal management and cost per meal. For children and adolescents' nutrition and well-being through school lunch, it is necessary to prepare a database of the processed and packaged foods and education program concerning nutrition labelling and food safety.
