Based on the Boussinesq wave model, the wave distribution in the Chagui-Do sea area in Jeju was simulated by applying the directional irregular waves at an incident boundary. The time and spatial variations of monthly mean wave height and period were investigated, which aims to provide basic information on optimal sites for wave power generation. The grid size and time interval of the Boussinesq wave model were validated by examining wave distributions around a surface piercing wall, fixed at sea bottom with a constant slope. Except for the summer season, the significant wave height is dominated by wind waves and appears to be relatively high at the north sea of Chagui-Do, which is open to the ocean, while it is remarkably reduced at the rear sea of Chagui-Do because of its blocking effect on incident waves. In the summer, the significant wave height is higher at the south sea, and it is dominated by the swell waves, which is contributed by the strong south-west wind. The magnitude of significant wave height is the largest in the winter and the lowest in the spring. Annual average of the significant wave height is distinctively high at the west sea close to the Chagui-Do coast, due to a steep variation of water depth and corresponding wave focusing effect. The seasonal and spatial distribution of the wave period around Chagui-Do sea reveals very similar characteristics to the significant wave height. It is suggested that the west sea close to the Chagui-Do coast is the mast promising site for wave power generation.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the geomorphological environment changes of tidal flat in the Cheonsu Bay. Especially, it centers on the changes in the sedimentary environment using remote sensing data. Multi-temporal Landsat data and topographic maps were used in this study. The results are summarized as follows: the tidal flat of Cheonsu Bay changes in many ways depending on the direction of the tidal current. In the neighborhood of Ganwoldo, the scale of the tidal flat has continuously been expanded due to the superiority of sedimentation after a tide embankment was built. When we analyzed the grain size of sediments and implemented in-situ field survey, it was found that the innermost part of the bay consists of a mud flat, with the midway part mixed flat, and the nearest part to the sea sand flat. On the other hand, in the neighborhood of Seomot isle and its beach, sedimentation is superior in the eastern part whereas erosion is superior in the western part. In other words, the western coast of the beach is contacted with the open seas and under much influence of ocean wave. The eastern coast is placed at the entrance of the bay and has sand bar and tidal flat developed due to submarine deposits that are accumulated on the sea floor by the tidal current. In conclusions, remote sensing methods can be effectively applied for quantitative analysis of geomorphological changes in tidal flat, and it is expected that the proposed schemes can be applied to another geomorphological environments such as beach, sand dune, and sand wave.
Morphology of a strain of unspecified Skeletonema species established from Korean coast was examined by light, fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy, and SSU(small subunit) and LSU(large subunit) rDNA of the strain were also sequenced. The specimen was characterized by solitary or short chains, and each cell contained 1-2 chloroplasts. The valve face was slightly convex, and the terminal fultoportula processes (TFPPs) were open and showed narrow distal ends that could be truncated or spiny with claw-like protrusions. The basal part of the TFPPs was tubular and oblique to the cell axis. The intercalary fultoportula processes (IFPPs) were also narrow, completely open, and joined in a 1 : 1 junction. Occasionally, one IFPP was connected with two opposing IFPPs. The morphological features of the specimen were identical to those of Skeletonema pseudocostatum. Molecular phylogeny based on SSU rDNA revealed that the Korean strain is nested within a clade comprising S. pseudocostatum and S. tropicum. However, based on D1-D2 LSU rDNA sequences, a clade including S. pseudocostatum and a Korean strain was separated from the S. tropicum clade. This indicates that the Korean strain can be identified as S. pseudocostatum. This species represents the first record from Korean coastal waters.

As problems such as difficulties in securing stable energy resources and global warming due to the emission of greenhouse gases due to the use of fossil fuels have emerged, interest in the development of renewable energy is increasing. Since the tidal phenomenon has a regularity that occurs regularly with a certain period, it is possible to predict accurately in advance, which has a advantage in terms of energy recovery. Therefore, various methods have been devised to utilize the tide as an energy source. Tidal power using barrages is a representative method that is widely operated, but the promotion of tidal power generation projects is being delayed or stopped due to the decrease in the level of water in the tidal basin, changes in water quality and in the ecosystem. In this study, a field experiment was conducted to develop and verify the performance of a tidal power device applicable to sea areas where dykes are already installed. As a result of carrying out four cases of experiments using two water tanks, pipe lines, open channels, weirs, and water turbine and generator, the possibility of developing a power generation system capable of 10 kW output or more and 60% efficiency or more was confirmed. These research results can be used for small-scale tidal power by utilizing the existing dykes.

This paper analyzes the sea state and characteristics during the August 2011 passage of Typhoon Muifa based on data measured at four ocean weather/wave observation stations (buoys) located on the southwestern coast of Korea. When the typhoon arrived in the area approximately 230 km west of Mokpo at 9 PM on August 7, the decrease in air pressure led to increases in sea level of 25.64 cm at the Chilbal-do buoy, 16.43 cm at the Geomun-do buoy, and 9.60 cm at the Geoje-do buoy. The maximum wave height increased at the Geomun-do buoy about seven times faster than at the Chilbal-do buoy. The low water temperature at Chilbaldo during the typhoon passage probably reduced the wave energy. In the face of the oncoming typhoon, the southwest direction of the wind and waves may have been the result of external forces transporting seawater (energy) from the open sea toward the coast. The weather and ocean data from the Mara-do buoy were negatively correlated with those of Chilbal-do, whereas the data from Geomun-do had a positive correlation with those of Geoje-do.
Typhoon effects on macrotide open-coast intertidal sediments were investigated in the Gochang Gwangseungri sandy intertidal flat on the Korean western coast. Variations in the surface sediment texture, accumulation, and sedimentary facies were observed before and after the Typhoon Kompasu in 2010. The typhoon Kompasu landed on the southwestern coast of the Korean Peninsula and passed inland between September 1st and 2nd, 2010, respectively. Surface sediments and their accumulation before and after the typhoon were sampled and measured at intervals of 30 m along a survey line on the Gwangseungri intertidal flat. The intertidal areas were divided into high, middle, and lower tidal zones based on the mean high-wate level, mean sea level, and mean low-water level, respectively. The surface sediments of each tidal zone show rare variations in grain size and sorting of sediment texture before and after the typhoon Kompasu, whereas negative skewness values increased in the middle and lower tidal zones after the typhoon rather than before the typhoon. Surface accumulation represents deposition in the upper and middle tidal zone and erosion in the lower tidal zones after the typhoon. The accumulation decreased from the high to the lower tidal zones.
Three dominant rocky intertidal macroalgae, the fucoids Fucus gardneri and Pelvetiopsis limitata (Phaeophyta) and the red alga Mazzaella cornucopiae (= Iridaea cornucopiae) on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada were used in a series of field experiments to examine interspecific interactions. These experiments showed complex patterns which included an interchange of negative (inhibition) and positive (facilitation) interactions depending on neighbor distance. Less fucoid recruitment occurred in the plots with greater percent cover of a turfforming red alga, M. cornucopiae. However, experimentally removing Mazzaella turf (the turf was considered to be "blocking" fucoid recruits or "shading" growing recruits) did not increase recruitment. This result indicated that there may be another factor(s) involved in the survivorship of juvenile fucoids in the turf-removed plots. Morphological differences in adult plants between Mazzaella and the two fucoids resulted in another type of interaction; these began when fucoids successfully settled and grew nearby or within the red algal turf. By monitoring microhabitat at the individual plant level for two years, I found that survivorship of fucoid recruits showed different species-specific patterns. The patterns also varied as the microhabitat changed from Mazzaella turf edge to open space. For F. gardneri, longevity of P.limitata at all distances tested was similar. A reason for greater longevity of F. gardneri individuals at edge microhabitats may be that these sites have one side open to light and nutrients and another site that buffers them from desiccation and wave impact. In the Mazzaella-Fucus interaction, neighbor distance was a key factor in determining whether the outcome of the interaction would be competition or facilitation (or protection). This study provides experimental evidence that detectable biological interactions occur in this upper intertidal algal community where physical conditions are usually severe, and also indicates the importance of small scale examination in understanding macroalgal interactions in intertidal habitats.

To understand the spatial-temporal distribution of seawater in Korea's South Sea, seawater movement and the distribution of water temperature has been analyzed using a hydrodynamic model (the Princeton Ocean Model). The directions of tidal currents were generally westward during flood tides and eastward during ebb tides. Northeastward Tsushima Warm Currents in the open sea, which is deeper than 50m were stronger than in coastal areas. Analysis of data from the hydrodynamic model showed that the water temperature in the semi-closed bay was relatively higher ($26{\sim}28^{\circ}C$) than in the open sea ($18{\sim}22^{\circ}C$). The exchange volume of semi-closed seawater was $10,331m^3/sec$ in Gwangyang Bay, $16,935m^3/sec$ in Yeosu-Gamag Bay and $13,454m^3/sec$ in Geoje-Hansan Bay. Therefore, it was shown that the lower seawater exchange volume is, the higher seawater temperature will be.

Recently as a result of excessive development. pollution of the coast and occurrence of a typhoon year after year, fishermen suffer heavy losses in fish farming which is the one of the most important earnings ways. For solution of these problems, we need to go out into the open sea from an inland sea. In this study we suggested new fish cage which makes up for the structural weakness of existing wooden fish cages. It can farm fishes in the open sea of high wave and current with no damages from a typhoon. We substituted TPU(Thermoplastic Polyurethane) air chamber for existing styrofoam flotage which was harmful to the environment and impermanent. We used PE(Polyethylene) pipes for the maintenance of formation and the prevention of buoyancy loss caused by a breakdown of flotage. PE b rackets were designed to combine PE pipes with TPU air-chamber flotage. It has good strength and light weight. As a result of modeling test. it is great in buoyancy, strength and flexibility against wave. Because it can control buoyancy arbitrarily, moreover, we expect that it will reduce damages of a red water by applying it as semi-submerged fish cages.
Recently, Due to variable marine accident occurred, problems relating to marine accidents have been raised. Of these accidents, designated anchorage of Korea coastal port, spcially open-sea anchorage, occurred dragging anchor and accidents are likely, due to failure to obtain a valid ship's holding power so that it is the situation unsatisfactory that ensuring the safety of the anchored ship and anchorage systematic safety management stadars for the efficent operation of the anchorage. also in case of open-sea anchorage vulnerable to external force of certain conditions due to geographical location and topographical characteristics of the port, accidents are likely dragging anchor by typoon or suddenly strong wind and secondary accidents are concerned. This paper shows standard of limit external force to ensure the safety anchorage each of ship's size through review marine accidents on Pohang port, also it is determined to be used as a basic reference for anchoring safety and efficient anchorage management.
