Comparisons by gender and school type in the association between betting games and problem gambling among adolescents (청소년의 돈내기 게임 경험과 문제도박의 관계에서 성별 및 학교급별 차이 비교)

  • This study aimed to examine the association between betting games and problem gambling among adolescents, with attention paid to comparisons by gender and school level. For this purpose, this study analyzed a sample of 3,653 adolescents from the 2015 Survey on Youth Gambling Problems. The main findings are as follows. First, experiencing online betting games compared to non-online betting games was associated with higher risks of being light and severe problem gambling among adolescents. Second, the associations between online betting games and problem gambling was more pronounced for male adolescents than for female adolescents. Third, the associations between online betting games and problem gambling was more pronounced for high school students than for middle school students. Based on the findings, this study suggested practical strategies to prevent problem gambling among adolescents.

  • Since online betting occurs on online where anybody can access through internet, thus, the online gambling market has been expanding. Domestic illegal gambling market size is 4 times bigger than that of legal gambling market, and illegal online betting market is rapidly growing as well. Currently online gambling does exist domestically in form of Sports promotion voting rights, also known as, Toto and Proto and internet lottery. However, the need for other types of online gambling to be permitted, expanded and managed has been suggested. This research has analyzed online gambling users, online gambling addicts and general population's awareness on expansion and operation of online gambling, contraction measures of illegal online gambling and operation measures in case of permitted expansion of online gambling. The result of this research's analysis showed that each group has significantly different awareness level on positive and negative effects of permitting online gambling's expansion. Also, it showed that each group has significantly different awareness on permitting expansion of racing betting as a legal gambling item. Since it is the proven fact that illegal online gambling users could turn into legal users and that users could use the service more positively if online gambling is legalized through allowance and expansion process; one could expect the positive effects from permitting expansion of online gambling.

  • This study investigates the effects of availability and accessibility on an individual's risk of developing a gambling problem. A total of 24 off-track betting facilities located in 12 districts of Seoul were examined in an effort to identify any association between their presence and citizens' gambling habits. Study participants included 1,490 online recruits residing in Seoul who participated in gambling activities in the 12 months prior to the study. To examine the differences in addiction rates and gambling frequency, a survey of demographics, gambling addictions, and gambling frequency divided the participants into two groups: those who resided in a district where off-track betting facilities were available, and those who resided elsewhere. Analysis results indicate that gambling frequency and addiction rates were significantly higher among participants residing in a district where off-track betting terminals are available. Additional analysis was performed with participants who mainly gambled on horse racing, with results similar to the previous analysis-significantly higher rates of gambling addiction and frequency were observed among participants residing in close proximity to off-track betting facilities.

  • This study anatomizes various traits of slots in Slotomania, the most popular online slot game in the world. Developed by Playtika, Slotomania is a social casino genre game that runs over Facebook. Slotomania has been the number one as a title in the social casino genre, and this study multi-dimensionally analyzes various characteristics of slots that exist in the game. Specifically, it analyzes factors of 1) User Interface(UI) 2) Theme 3) Payline & Betting 4) Structure & Symbol 5) Bonus 6) Additional Traits. As a reuslt, it reports that there is "diversity". Therefore, it not only researches how and why those slots are attractive to people but also explores the market of social casino based on Facebook.

Study on Perceptions through Big data Analysis on Gambling related News in Korea (한국 사행산업 관련 뉴스의 빅데이터 분석을 통한 인식 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the recognition of gambling industry through the semantic analysis of news data on lottery, sports betting, horse racing and casino that was reported between 1990 to 2015 in South Korea. This paper revealed the difference between journalists' intention and public's perception about news by analyzing the frequency and connectivity of news with framing and public's interest through semantic network analysis and explored the policy characteristics and innovation task. The result of analysis, news on lottery game mainly has been reported social issue related with win such as 'winning number', 'prize money', 'suspicion of manipulation' and etc. News on sports betting has been reported mandatory information related with business project and illegal site such as 'bidding', 'illegal site', 'sales target' and etc. News about horse racing has been reported the information about the business advertisement such as 'online race track' and 'promotion'. Lastly, casino related news has been reported 'major information' such as illegality', 'gambling place' and 'foreigner'. As a result of times series analysis, news about casino in the 1990s, news about lottery in the 2000s and news about horse racing in 2010s have been increased. Public's interest also has been moved to 'business scandal', 'winning game', 'citizens' campaign' and etc. Gambling related news has been classified by four types, 1. advertising publicity(horse racing), 2. mandatory information(sports betting), 3. social issue(public agenda, lottery), 4. major information(casino). We could get the insight that news can be formed a public agenda, when news is reported as a social issue with high frequency and public's interest like lottery related news.

Latent Class Analysis of Gambling Activities among Korean Adolescents (한국 청소년 도박유형 특성의 잠재계층분석)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to identify the types of gambling among adolescents and provide basic prevention information regarding adolescents' gambling problems. Methods: Secondary data from representative national survey on 2015 Youth Gambling Problems of Korea Center on Gambling Problems were used. Using latent class analysis (LCA), 13 gambling types such as offline and online games of 14,011 adolescents were classified, and gambling experiences and characteristics were analyzed. Results: The subgroups of adolescent gambling were identified as four latent classes: a rare group (84.5% of the sample), a risk group (1.0%), an offline group (11.9%), and an expanded group (2.6%). The types and characteristics of gambling among the latent classes differed. In the risk group, adolescents participated in online illegal sports betting and internet casino, and gambling time, gambling expenses, and the number of gambling types were higher than other groups. Conclusion: Gambling frequently occur among adolescent, and the subtypes of gambling did not reveal homogeneous characteristics. In order to prevent adolescent gambling problems, it is a necessary to develop tailored prevention intervention in the nursing field, which is appropriate to the characteristics of adolescent gambling group and can help with early identification.
