  • Based on the results of studies on acetone excretion in diabetic patients, a one - chip sensors array was fabricated by combining acetone-selective sensor materials and volatile-organic-compound sensitive sensor materials. An electonic-nose was implemented using a sensor array and confirmed selectivity for five gases. In this system, the excretion of diabetic patients and controls was sampled with solid phase microextraction fiber and transferred to the sensor array. Although the control and diabetic patients were distinct, several samples failed. In the control group, the results of blood tests were normal, but patients were highly obese. In addition, the gas chromatography mass spectrometry results for the subjects revealed chemicals that are external factors.

  • A micromachined fluidic structure for the introduction of liquid samples into a chip-based sensor array composed of individually addressable polymeric microbeads has been developed. The structure consists of a separately attached cover glass, a single silicon chip having micromachined channels and microbead storage cavities, and a glass carver. In our sensor array, transduction occurs via colorimetric and fluorescence changes to receptors and indicator molecules that are covalently attached to termination sites on the polymeric microbeads. Data streams are acquired for each of the individual microbeads using a CCD. One of the key parts of the structure is a passive fluid introduction system driven only by capillary force. The velocity of penetration of a horizontal capillary for the device having a rectangular cross section has been derived, and it is quite similar to the Washburn Equation calculated for a pipe with a circular cross section having uniform radius. The test results show that this system is useful in a ${\mu}$-TAS and biomedical applications.

  • The pixel size in high-resolution complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) image sensors continues to shrink due to chip size limitations. However, the pixel pitch's miniaturization causes deterioration of optical performance. As one solution, a quad color filter (CF) array with pixel binning has been developed to enhance sensitivity. For high sensitivity, the microlens structure also needs to be optimized as the CF arrays change. In this paper, the covered microlens, which consist of four microlenses covered by one large microlens, are proposed for the quad CF array in the backside illumination pixel structure. To evaluate the optical performance, the suggested microlens structure was simulated from 0.5 ㎛ to 1.0 ㎛ pixels at the center and edge of the sensors. Moreover, all pixel structures were compared with and without in-pixel deep trench isolation (DTI), which works to distribute incident light uniformly into each photodiode. The suggested structure was evaluated with an optical simulation using the finite-difference time-domain method for numerical analysis of the optical characteristics. Compared to the conventional microlens, the suggested microlens show 29.1% and 33.9% maximum enhancement of sensitivity at the center and edge of the sensor, respectively. Therefore, the covered microlens demonstrated the highly sensitive image sensor with a quad CF array.

  • A primitive gas classification system which can classify limited species of gas was designed and simulated. The 'electronic nose' consists of an array of 4 metal oxide gas sensors with different selectivity patterns, signal collecting unit and a signal pattern recognition and decision Part in PLD(programmable logic device) chip. Sensor array consists of four commercial, tin oxide based, semiconductor type gas sensors. BP(back propagation) neutral networks with MLP(Multilayer Perceptron) structure was designed and implemented on CPLD of fifty thousand gate level chip by VHDL language for processing the input signals from 4 gas sensors and qualification of gases in air. The network contained four input units, one hidden layer with 4 neurons and output with 4 regular neurons. The 'electronic nose' system was successfully classified 4 kinds of industrial gases in computer simulation.

  • In this paper, we proposed a biologically inspired light-adaptive edge detection circuit based on the human retina. A saturating resistive network was suggested for light adaptation and simulated by using HSPICE. The light adaptation mechanism of the edge detection circuit was quantitatively analyzed by using a simple model of the saturating resistive element. A light-adaptive capability of the edge detection circuit was confirmed by using the one-dimensional array of the 128 pixels with various levels of input light intensity. Experimental data of the saturating resistive element was compared with the simulated results. The entire capability of the edge detection circuit, implemented with the saturating resistive network, was investigated through the two-dimensional array of the $64{\times}64$ pixels

  • This paper presents development of meander monitoring system base reliable detection at conveyer belt used for materials transport line of steel company. Conventional detection method is losed the confidence, because of the place with bad surroundings of measurement so much that materials production line are completely exposed to dust, moisture and vibration. For the solution of this problem, we developed infrared meander detection system using the infrared sensor array and one chip microprocessor which is available for bad surroundings and inexpensive. The reliability of the system was estimated by experiment.

  • There are two methods to fabricate the readout electronic to a large-area CMOS image sensor (LACIS). One is to design and manufacture the sensor part and signal processing electronics in a single chip and the other is to integrate both parts with bump bonding or wire bonding after manufacturing both parts separately. The latter method has an advantage of the high yield because the optimized and specialized fabrication process can be chosen in designing and manufacturing each part. In this paper, LACIS chip, that is optimized design for the latter method of fabrication, is presented. The LACIS chip consists of a 3-TR pixel photodiode array, row driver (or called as a gate driver) circuit, and bonding pads to the external readout ICs. Among 4 types of the photodiode structure available in a standard CMOS process, $N_{photo}/P_{epi}$ type photodiode showed the highest quantum efficiency in the simulation study, though it requires one additional mask to control the doping concentration of $N_{photo}$ layer. The optimized channel widths and lengths of 3 pixel transistors are also determined by simulation. The select transistor is not significantly affected by channel length and width. But source follower transistor is strongly influenced by length and width. In row driver, to reduce signal time delay by high capacitance at output node, three stage inverter drivers are used. And channel width of the inverter driver increases gradually in each step. The sensor has very long metal wire that is about 170 mm. The repeater consisted of inverters is applied proper amount of pixel rows. It can help to reduce the long metal-line delay.

  • This paper will read about a multichannel frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar sensor with switching transmit (TX) antennas is developed at W-band. To achieve a high angular resolution, a uniform linear array consisting of 5 switching-TX and 12 receive (RX) antennas is employed with the digital beamforming technique. The overall radar front-end module comprises a W-band transceiver and TX/RX antennas. A multichannel transceiver module consists of 5 up-conversion and 12 down-conversion channels, where one of the TX channels is sequentially switched ON. For developing transmitter, we developed an HPA (high power amplified) MMIC chip for W-band radar system and fabricated a transmitter module using this chip. In order to develop the W-band transmitter, we analyzed the important antenna transition structure from HPA MMIC line to W/G (Waveguide)antenna via M/S(microstrip) and fabricated it with 5 transmission channels. As a result, the output power of the transmitter was within 1 dB of the error range after analysis and measurement under normal temperature and environmental conditions.
