  • In order to prepare the fuel-economic hull form design method for fine higher-speed ships, systematic theoretical and experimental study has been performed on the relation between hull form characteristics and ship's resistance and on the effect of the optimization of main hull form characteristics. The results of this study provide not only a great insight into the relation between ship's resistance and hull form characteristics, but also a proper direction of the optimization of main hull form characteristics for the improvement of ship's resistance characteristics.

  • The effects of maleic-anhydride-grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) and montmorillonite (MMT) on the wear resistance of polypropylene (PP) were investigated. The surface of MMT was modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, and the interfacial interaction between PP and MMT was improved using PP-g-MAH. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to confirm that silane was grafted on the surface of MMT. The Taber abrasion test and scanning electron microscopy were used to determine the wear resistance and observe the surface morphology of PP, respectively, after wear testing. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was used to compare the effects of PP-g-MAH and silane modification of MMT on the dispersion of MMT. The results indicated that silane was successfully grafted onto the surface of MMT. Moreover, the wear resistance of PP was improved by the addition of MMT. The wear resistance of PP composites comprising silane-modified MMT and PP-g-MAH was higher than those of other PP composites. This was attributed to silane improving the interfacial interaction between MMT and PP.

  • The determination for bearing capacity of precast nodular piles is conventionally time-consuming and high-cost by using numerous experiments and empirical methods. This study proposes an intelligent method to evaluate the bearing capacity and shaft resistance of the nodular piles with high efficiency based on long short-term memory (LSTM) approach. A series of field tests are first designed to measure the axial force, shaft resistance and displacement of the combined nodular piles under different loadings, in comparison with the single pre-stressed high-strength concrete piles. The test results confirm that the combined nodular piles could provide larger ultimate bearing capacity (more than 100%) than the single pre-stressed high-strength concrete piles. Both the LSTM-based method and empirical methods are used to calculate the shift resistance of the combined nodular piles. The results show that the LSTM-based method has a high-precision estimation on shaft resistance, not only for the ultimate load but also for the working load.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of anterolateral (45$^{\circ}$) and lateral (90$^{\circ}$) direction resistance, with using an elastic band, on the electromyographic(EMG) activity ratio of the vastus medialis oblique (VMO) and the vastus lateralis (VL) during squat exercise. Methods: The study subjects were 19 active people with no history of patellofemoral pain, limitation of range of motion or pain when performing squat exercise. A 'repeated measures within subjects' design was used. The subjects were asked to perform three repetitions of a 90$^{\circ}$ knee flexion squat exercise with anterolateral (45$^{\circ}$) and lateral (90$^{\circ}$) resistance and without resistance, respectively. The EMG activity of the VMO and VL were recorded by surface EMG electrodes and the results were normalized by the % MVIC value. Results: Repeated measures ANOVA's revealed that squat exercise with anterolateral (45$^{\circ}$) resistance produced significantly greater VMO/VL EMG activity ratio than that with lateral (90$^{\circ}$) resistance and without resistance (p=.013). Yet the result of contrast testing revealed that squat exercise with lateral (90$^{\circ}$) resistance showed no significant difference of the VMO/VL EMG activity ratio, as compared with squat exercise without resistance (p>0.05). Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that squat exercise combining anterolateral (45$^{\circ}$) resistance can contribute positively to the patients with patellofemoral pain as they increase the VMO/VL EMG activity ratio.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of supplementation of mulberry powder, mulberry extract and silkworm powder during the 8 weeks of resistance exercise on muscle increase of rats. Fifty males, Sprague-Dawley rat, were randomly divided into 5 groups: CON(control group, n = 10), REG(resistance exercise group, n = 10), MP REG(mulberry powder intake and resistance exercise group, n = 10), ME REG(mulberry extract intake and resistance exercise group, n = 10) and SP REG(silkworm powder intake and resistance exercise group, n = 10). After climbing the ladder without weights during the 1 week of adaptation period, the rats in the resistance exercise group were trained to climb a 0.98-m vertical(80 degree incline) ladder with weights in their tail during 7 weeks(10 times each day, 2 days per week). After exercise, the skeletal muscle was extracted from the flexor hallucis longus. The absolute weight of skeletal muscle was measured by the electronic balance and the relative weight of skeletal muscle about the weight was calculated. The strength and density of legs muscle were analyzed by the computed tomography scan. After 8 weeks of resistance exercise, the absolute weight of skeletal muscle wasn't significant, but it increased in MP REG 8%, ME REG 8% and SP REG 10% compared to REG. The relative weight of skeletal muscle increased significantly in SP REG compared to REG (p < 0.05). Additionally, there was a significant increase of density and strength of the forelegs in SP REG compared to CON (p < 0.05). However, there was no significant increase of density and strength of the hind legs. In conclusion, regular resistance exercise made rats muscle increase and there was more muscle increase effected by providing silkworm.

  • A simple calculation tool for added resistance in waves is developed to utilize for initial design or embedded module for navigation support system. In order to select an appropriate calculation method for added resistance in waves, three methods (drift method, integrated pressure method, radiated energy method) based on strip method are applied to Wigley I and KVLCC2. The methods for added resistance in waves give the underestimated results because it is difficult to consider nonlinear effects due to reflected wave. We apply asymptotic (Faltinsen's method) and empirical formula (NMRI's method) to improve the accuracy for short wave length region. In comparison with experimental results, the combination of radiated energy method and short wave correction method of NMRI is the most reasonable. However, a simple sum of results calculated by two methods gives rise to the overestimation of added resistance for short wave length region because added resistance of radiated energy method exits in total reflection region. To overcome this problem, modified radiated energy method is proposed using correction coefficient defined by reflection coefficient of NMRI's method. Finally, added resistance in regular waves is composed of added resistance of modified radiated energy method and that of short wave correction method of NMRI. Estimated added resistance in regular waves is validated by comparison with experimental results of other research groups.

  • The strength of steel material in a concrete filled steel tube (CFT) is reduced in fire, but the filled interior concrete structurally ensures the fire resistance due to its high thermal capacity. More, the contractibility of CFT is excellent since it can be constructed without form work. This research analyzed the interior concrete strength and deformation characteristics, which are the influence factors of the fire resistance of CFT, in proportion to the axial load ratio. The fire resistance performance according to changes of the axial load ratio showed great fluctuation. As $280{\times}280{\times}6$ CFT columns with the concrete strengths of 24 MPa and 40 MPa and the axial load ratios of 0.9, 0.6, and 0.2 in accordance with KS F 2257-1 and 7 were heated with loading to examine the fire resistance performance, the 24 MPa concrete exhibited the fire resistance time as 27, 113, and 180 minutes for the axial load ratios, 0.9, 0.6, and 0.2 respectively. In case of 40 MPa concrete, the fire resistance time were turned out to be 19 and 28 minutes for the axial load ratios, 0.9 and 0.6 respectively. The results of 40 MPa concrete showed the much lower fire resistance performance when comparing with those of 24 MPa concrete. The fire resistance performance was not increased significantly when the axial load ratio was reduced. Therefore, the deceased fire resistance performance of high strength concrete is assumed to be caused by the internal pressure increase upon the heat application.

  • PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of lowintensity resistance exercise combined with blood flow restriction on muscle activity and muscle fatigue to determine if such a combination may be an alternative to high-intensity resistance exercise in maintaining the muscle mass and strength and preventing degenerative loss of skeletal muscle and to provide basic data for presenting the effectiveness of exercise. METHODS: The interventions were provided for five weeks, four sessions a week, once a day, 60 minutes a session to Experimental group I (n = 13), in which low-intensity resistance exercise was applied by combining blood flow restriction with the biceps curl and experimental group II (n = 12), in which only high-intensity resistance exercise was applied. As a pre-test, the biceps brachii muscle activity and fatigue were measured by surface electromyography, and the hemodynamic variables, such as blood pressure and heart rate, were measured. The post-test was performed identically to the pre-test and compared and analyzed with the pre-test. RESULTS: A significant difference within-group was observed in the biceps brachii muscle activity and fatigue in experimental group I and only in biceps brachii activity in experimental group II. No significant differences were observed between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Since the low-intensity resistance exercise combined with blood flow restriction has similar effects to high-intensity resistance exercise, it is considered an alternative for improving muscle function in groups unable to perform high-intensity resistance exercise.
