The flow and heat/mass transfer characteristics on the squealer tip surface of a high-turning turbine rotor blade have been investigated at a Reynolds number of $2.09{\times}10^5$, by employing the oil-film flow visualization and naphthalene sublimation technique. The squealer rim height-to-chord ratio and tip gap height-to-chord ratio are fixed as typical values of $h_{st}/c$ = 5.5% and h/c = 2.0%, respectively, for turbulence intensities of Tu = 0.3% and 15%. The results show that the near-wall flow phenomena within the cavity of the squealer tip are totally different from those over the plane tip. There are complicated backward flows from the suction side to the pressure side near the cavity floor, in contrast to the plane tip gap flows moving toward the suction side after flow separation/reattachment. The squealer tip provides a significant reduction in tip surface thermal load with less severe gradient compared to the plane tip. In this study, the tip surface is divided into six different regions, and transport phenomena at each region are discussed in detail. The mean thermal load averaged over the squealer cavity floor is augmented by 7.5 percents under the high inlet turbulence level.

This study examined the convective heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids flowing over a heated fine wire. Convective heat transfer coefficients were measured for four different nano-engine-oil samples under three different temperature boundary conditions, i.e., both or either variation of wire and fluid temperature and constant film temperature. Experimental investigations that the increase in the convective heat transfer coefficients of nanofluids in the internal pipe flow often exceeded the increase in thermal conductivity were recently published; however, the current study did not confirm these results. Analyzing the behavior of the convective heat transfer coefficient under various temperature conditions was a useful tool to explain the relation between the thermal conductivity and the boundary layer thickness of nanofluids.

Slug flow is the most common multi-phase flow encountered in oil and gas industry. In this study, the hydrodynamic features of flow in pipes investigated numerically using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations for the effect of slug flow on the vertical and bent pipeline. The compressible Reynold averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation was used as the governing equation, with the volume of fluid (VOF) method to capture the outline of the bubble in a pipeline. The simulations were tested for the grid and time step convergence, and validated with the experimental and theoretical results for the main hydrodynamic characteristics of the Taylor bubble, i.e., bubble shape, terminal velocity of bubble, and the liquid film velocity. The slug flow was simulated with various air and water injection velocities in the pipeline. The simulations revealed the effect of slug flow as the pressure occurring in the wall of the pipeline. The peak pressure and pressure oscillations were observed, and those magnitudes and trends were compared with the change in air and water injection velocities. The mechanism of the peak pressures was studied in relation with the change in bubble length, and the maximum peak pressures were investigated for the different positions and velocities of the air and water in the pipeline. The pressure oscillations were investigated in comparison with the bubble length in the pipe and the oscillation was provided with the application of damping. The pressures were compared with the case of a bent pipe, and a 1.5 times higher pressures was observed due to the compression of the bubbles at the corner of the bent. These findings can be used as a basic data for further studies and designs on pipeline systems with multi-phase flow.
This application study of a swash-plate type axial piston pump was concerned about the lubrication characteristics between cylinder barrel and valve plate which are the main rotating body and its opposite sliding part respectively. A computer simulation was implemented to assess bearing and sealing functions of the fluid film between cylinder barrel and valve plate. A numerical algorithm was developed to facilitate simultaneous calculations of dynamic cylinder pressure, 3 degree-of-freedom barrel motions considering inertia effect, and fluid film pressure assuming full fluid film lubrication regime. Central clearance, tilt angle, and azimuth angle of the rotating body were calculated for each time step. Surface waviness was found to be an influential factor due to the small fluid film thickness which can appear in flat land bearings. Five surface lays which can form on the lubrication surface in accordance with machining process were defined and analyzed using the simulation tool. Oil leakage flow and frictional torque in the fluid film between cylinder barrel and valve plate were also calculated to discuss in the viewpoint of energy loss. The simulation results showed that in actual sliding conditions proper surface non-flatness can make a positive effect on the energy efficiency and reliability of the thrust bearing.

Three-dimensional flow characteristics within a high-acceleration first-stage turbine vane passage has been investigated in a newly-built vane cascade for propulsion. The result shows that there is a strong favorable pressure gradient on the vane pressure surface. On its suction surface, however, there exists not only a much stronger favorable pressure gradient than that on the pressure surface upstream of the mid-chord but also a subsequent adverse pressure gradient downstream of it. By employing two different oil-film methods with upstream coating and full-coverage coating, a four-vortex model horseshoe vortex system can be identified ahead of each leading edge in the cascade, and the separation line of inlet boundary layer flow as well as the separation line of re-attached flow is provided as well. In addition, basic flow data such as secondary flow, aerodynamic loss, and flow turning angle downstream of the cascade are obtained.

An experimental study of the skin friction measurement in a turbulent boundary-layer has been carried out. The skin friction measurements are made using the laser interferometer skin friction (LISF) meter, which optically detects the rate of thinning of an oil applied to the test surface. This technique produces reliable skin friction data over a wide range of flow situations up to 3-dimensional complicated flows with separation, where traditional skin friction measurement techniques are not applicable. The present measured data in a turbulent boundary-layer on a flat plate using the LISF technique shows a good comparison with the result from the previous velocity profile techniques, which proves the validity of the present technique. An extensive error analysis is carried out for the present technique yielding an uncertainty of about .+-.8%, which makes them suitable for CFD code validation purposes. Finally the measurements of the skin friction in a separated region after a surface-mounted obstacle are also presented.
Experimental data are presented which describe the effects of a combustor-level high free-stream turbulence on the near-wall flow structure and heat/mass transfer on the endwall of a linear high-turning turbine rotor cascade. The end wall flow structure is visualized by employing the partial- and total-coverage oil-film technique, and heat/mass transfer rate is measured by the naphthalene sublimation method. A turbulence generator is designed to provide a highly-turbulent flow which has free-stream turbulence intensity and integral length scale of 14.7% and 80mm, respectively, at the cascade entrance. The surface flow visualizations show that the high free-stream turbulence has little effect on the attachment line, but alters the separation line noticeably. Under high free-stream turbulence, the incoming near-wall flow upstream of the adjacent separation lines collides more obliquely with the suction surface. A weaker lift-up force arising from this more oblique collision results in the narrower suction-side corner vortex area in the high turbulence case. The high free-stream turbulence enhances the heat/mass transfer in the central area of the turbine passage, but only a slight augmentation is found in the end wall regions adjacent to the leading and trailing edges. Therefore, the high free-stream turbulence makes the end wall heat load more uniform. It is also observed that the heat/mass transfers along the locus of the pressure-side leg of the leading-edge horseshoe vortex and along the suction-side corner are influenced most strongly by the high free-stream turbulence. In this study, the end wall surface is classified into seven different regions based on the local heat/mass transfer distribution, and the effects of the high free-stream turbulence on the local heat/mass transfer in each region are discussed in detail.

This paper presents design and analysis of ultrasonic vibrator featuring the piezoelectric actuator. After describing a geometric configuration of the proposed vibrator, an analytical model of the ultrasonic vibrator is formulated by adopting liquid film pattern theory and wave theory. The dynamic analysis and geometric optimization are then undertaken using a software ANSYS. The optimization is performed by taking the amplitude of the tip displacement as an objective function. The fluid flow characteristics of the proposed vibrator are analyzed by taking three different fluids: water, silicon oil and ethylene-glycol. This is achieved using a software FLUENT.
This paper deals with some thermal Characteristics of journal bearing such as the behaviour of the maximum bearing temperature, the lubricant's carry-over in the inlet region and so on. Temperatures of the bearing and the lubricants being supplied and discharged were measured along with shaft speed and bearing load. The results showed that with the increase of the Shaft speed, the maximum temperature rose at any shaft speed at a defferent rate of change defending on the flow regime of the lubricant film. And the lower eccentricity ratio is the more lubricant's carry-over occur. Additionally it was partially proved that the oil discharge temperature and the maximum temperature changed in quite different each other.

This paper describes the fluttering characteristics of the upper pad in a tilting pad journal bearing(6-pad, LOP type) using a steam turbine. In order to investigate the phenomena of the pad fluttering experimentally, the absolute vibration of the upper pads, the relative vibration between the bearing and the shaft and the circumferential distribution of the film thickness are measured under the different values of oil supply flow rate, shaft speed and bearing load.
