The effects of nonionic surfactant (SPAN 20) on the desulfurization process by Rhodococcus sp. strain IGTS8 have been investigated at various oil/water ratios, pHs and concentrations of surfactant. The hexadecane containing DBT was employed as model oil. The presence of surfactant in the oil/water mixture stabilized the oil/water interface, thus enhanced the efficiency of desulfurization. The volume percentages of oil in the oil/water mixture were 30, 50 and 70%. The concentrations of surfactant were varied from 0 to 0.33 wt% relative to water phase. In general, the biodesulfurization efficiencies were decreased as the concentration of SPAN 20 and the volume percentage of oil phase increased.

By saponification and extraction of corn oil foots abandoned as waste during oil refining, a mixture of phytosterols was obtained, and its major components were determined as .betha.-sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol by gas chromatographic analysis. The mixture is very cheap and regarded as an excellent substrate for direct fermentation of C-17 keto steroid intermediate for various steroid pharmaceuticals.
Light cycle Oil(LCO) contains 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene (2,6-DMNA) which is used as the basic material for high performance engineering plastics and liquid crystal polymer. This study was experimentally investigated to concentrate a mixture of dimethylnaphthalene(DMNA) isomers in the LCO by extraction-distillation combination as a pretreatment for separation and purification of 2,6-DMNA in the LCO. Furthermore, concentration of a mixture of DMNA isomers in the LCO compared between distillation and extraction-distillation combination. The recovery of aromatics in the LCO was performed by batch cocurrent multistage extraction with dimethylsulfoxide and water mixture as solvent. The concentration of naphthalene group(carbon number 10-12) in the extracted mixture is higher than that in the LCO. The yield for naphthalene group increased with decreasing carbon number. The yield for a mixture of DMNA isomers obtained in 5 equilibrium extration runs was about 65%. the separation of individual components with extractedmixture was tested by batch distillation. Futhermore, for recovery of a mixture of DMNA isomers of high concentration, distillate containing DMNA was distilled. As a result, a mixture of DMNA isomers with high concentration such as 60wt% was recovered. The extraction-distillation combination was more effective than the distillation to concentration a mixture of DMNA isomer in the LCO.
Limited and nonlimited emissions of scooters were analysed during several annual research programs of the Swiss Agency of Environment Forests and Landscape(SAEFL, BUWAL). Small scooters, which are very much used in the congested centers of several cities are a remarkable source of air pollution. Therefore every effort to reduce the emissions is an important contribution to improve the air quality in urban centers. In the present work detailed investigations of particle emissions of different 2-stroke scooters with direct injection and with carburetor were performed. The nanoparticulate emissions with different lube oils and fuels were measured by means of SMPS, (CPC) and NanoMet. Also the particle mass emission(PM) was measured with the same method as for Diesel engines. It can be stated, that the oil and fuel quality have a considerable influence on the particle emissions, which are mainly oil condensates. The engine technology influences the (nano)particle emissions by: mixture preparation, mixture tuning, oil consumption, postoxidation, quality, condition and temperature of the catalyst. Since the particulate emission of the 2-S consists mainly of lube oil condensates the minimization of oil consumption stays always an important goal.
A small scale centrifugal oil separator consisted of two concentric tubes was fabricated for spilt oil recovery. With speed control of the inner tube, its performance of oil separation was investigated. Oil-water mixture is separated by forced vortex motion with the rotating inner tube. Velocity and pressure distributions in the tubes were calculated. Control of rotating speed, which is the most influencing parameter, showed an optimum value 946rpm corresponding to the acceleration of 20g at the inner tube surface. Separation performance was suddenly deteriorated at rotating speed higher than 1200rpm.
Characteristics of the esterification reaction between free fatty acid in rice bran oil and methanol was investigated in the presence of catalysts, such as PTS(p-toluene sulfonic acid), Amberlyst 15 dry and SCX(silica gel based strong cation exchange resin). While reaction temperature was kept constant at $65^{\circ}C$, initial feed content of free fatty acid was varied from 100% to 1% by addition of pure free fatty acid which was previously made from rice bran oil. Also, the effect of mole ratio of methanol to fatty acid on the final conversion was examined. When esterification of pure free fatty acid was catalyzed by several acids, final conversions were increased in order of Amberlyst 15 dry, SCX and PTS. Using PTS catalyst, initially the reaction proceeded in homogeneous 2nd oder reaction mechanism. However, phase of reaction mixture changed from homogeneous to heterogeneous along the reaction time and then reaction rate was retarded by mass transfer resistance of methanol. Final conversion of free fatty acid in reaction mixture was depended on initial feed content of free fatty acid, and had maximum value at 30% of initial feed free fatty acid content for all kinds of catalysts used. And the final conversion was increased with mole ratio of methanol by the improvement of reaction rate. When initial feed free fatty acid content below 10% and the reaction was catalyzed by PTS, concentration of free fatty acid in reaction mixture was increased in the middle of reaction time by hydrolysis of triglyceride in reaction mixture. Also, if silica gel was added into the reaction mixture which had initial feed free fatty acid content below 50%, final conversion was increased by the adsorption of moisture produced. The SCX catalyst made the esterification reaction of free fatty acid to progress like in case of PTS catalyst. However, when initial feed free fatty acid content below 10%, concentration of free fatty acid in. reaction mixture was decreased monotonically and not increased in the middle of reaction time on the contrary to the case of PTS. Thus, SCX catalyst accomplished more high value of final conversion than PTS catalyst for the initial feed fatty acid content range from 50% to 5% In case of initial feed free fatty acid content of 1% and mole ratio of methanol was 2, concentration of free fatty acid in reaction mixture increased over the initial feed free fatty acid content for all kind of catalysts used. Although SCX catalyst was added into reaction mixture which had 1% of initial feed fatty acid content, final conversion was hardly raised by mole ratio of methanol.
Efficacy of different control methods was evaluated for disease management of tomato bacterial wilt caused by $Ralstonia$$solanacearum$. All six chemical pesticides applied to the bacterial suspension showed $in$$vitro$ bactericidal activities against $R.$$solanacearum$. Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of copper hydroxide (CH), copper hydroxide-oxadixyl mixture (CH+O), and copper oxychloride-dithianon mixture (CO+D) were all 200 ${\mu}g/ml$; MIC of copper oxychloride-kasugamycin (CO+K) mixture was 100 ${\mu}g/ml$; MICs of both streptomycin- validamycin (S+V) and oxine copper-polyoxine B mixture (OC+PB) were 10 ${\mu}g/ml$. Among these chemical pesticides, treatment of the detached tomato leaves with the 5 pesticides (1 mg/ml), except for OC+PB delayed early wilting symptom development caused by the bacterial inoculation ($10^6$ and $10^7$ cfu/ml). Four pesticides, CH, CH+O, CO+K and S+V, showed disease protection in pot analyses. Six plant essential oils, such as cinnamon oil, citral, clove oil, eugenol, geraniol and limonene, differentially showed their antibacterial activities $in$$vitro$ against $R.$$solanacearum$ demonstrated by paper disc assay. Among those, cinnamon oil and clove oil exert the most effective activity for protection from the wilt disease caused by the bacterial infection ($10^6$ cfu/ml). Treatment with cinnamon oil and clove oil also suppressed bacterial disease by a higher inoculum concentration ($10^7$ cfu/ml). Clove oil could be used for prevention of bacterial wilt disease of tomato plants without any phytotoxicity. Thus, we suggest that copper compounds, antibiotics and essential oils have potency as a controlling agent of tomato bacterial wilt.

The effect of enhanced geometry (pore diameter, gap width) is investigated on the pool boiling of R-123/oil mixture for the enhanced tubes having pores with connecting gaps. Tubes with different pore diameters (and corresponding gap widths) are specially made. Significant heat transfer degradation by oil is observed for the present enhanced tubes. At 5% oil concentration, the degradation is 26 to 49% for $T_{sat}=4.4^{\circ}C$. The degradation increases 50 to 67% for $T_{sat}=26.7^{\circ}C$. The heat transfer degradation is significant even with small amount of oil (20 to 38% degradation at 1% oil concentration for $T_{sat}=4.4^{\circ}C$), probably due to the accumulation of oil in sub-tunnels. The pore size (or gap width) has a significant effect on the heat transfer degradation. The maximum degradation is observed for $d_p$ = 0.20 mm tube at $T_{sat}=4.4^{\circ}C$, and for $d_p$=0.23 mm tube at $T_{sat}=26.7^{\circ}C$. The minimum degradation is observed for $d_p$=0.27 mm tube for both saturation temperatures. It appears that the oil removal is facilitated for the larger pore diameter (along with larger gap) tube. The highest heat transfer coefficient with oil is obtained for $d_p$ =0.23 mm tube, which yielded the highest heat transfer coefficient for pure R-123. The heat transfer degradation increases as the heat flux decreases.
This study analyzed the flame characteristics when igniting 200 ml of flammable liquids containing equal parts gasoline and another flammable liquid. These mixtures were used to fill a divided space in a simulation. The length of one side of the divided space was 2,000 mm, and the length of the combustion device was 1,000 mm. The mixture with alcohol had the highest flame propagation speed (0.7 s), while the mixture with light oil showed the lowest (1.2 s). The gasoline and acetone mixture reached peak flame in 25.5 s, at the highest speed, while the mixture with light oil reached peak flame in 163.7 s at the lowest speed. The gasoline and light oil showed the longest continuous combustion time (332.7 s), while the gasoline and paint thinner showed the shortest (121.5 s). A fire inspector who is examining the scene of a fire needs to analyze both the statements of the first eyewitness and the flame characteristics collectively.
Characteristics of water separation in a FWKO(Free Water Knok Out) vessel was investigated to remove water from oil-water mixture. Decane, toluene, and asphalt were used as model oils. Preliminary experiments were carried out for decane in a prototype FWKO vessel. Based on the results of preliminary experiments, the prototype vessel was modified and its performance was evaluated by using toluene. The effects of experimental variables on the separation of oil-water mixture were evaluated in terms of separation efficiency. The experimental variables include water cut(water ratio), number of baffles, residence times, and operation temperatures. The optimum conditions of water separation were found to be 0.8 water cut, 3 baffles, 1,200 sec, and $45^{\circ}C$.
